Consolidated Kansas

Ivy, so sorry about your frustrating day. I do know what you mean on frustrations with the doctor's office. I ended up so frustrated with my DD's doctor's office from her surgery a month ago, that I've about decided I'm never stepping foot in a medical facility for myself again. I'll take the kids but I'm done.

Oh those babies are adorable. Isn't it nice to be able to tell gender immediately upon birth, unlike chickens where unless they're sex-linked, we have to sit around biting our nails for weeks wondering?

Josie, What a sweet looking dog!! She's lovely!
Ivy - soooo very adorable. What I wouldn't give to be able to own goats. Maybe if I win this lottery... LOL

Sapphire, I don't know if you've been on the Farm Animal Swap on FaceBook, but there are two adult GP's on there needing new homes. One is a year old & one is two years old, you might check those out. Both of them said they had been around livestock. The year old one I know the girl was needing a home for him ASAP because she had lost her job.

Danz, I hope you get your birds back in soon, I know you're worried about them.

IVY, what darling goat babies!

Josie, your new GP girl looks really nice, I know you will love her.

Well today has been a really busy day. We picked up our new car this morning & we were in Wichita all day with it. DH wanted to do a bunch of city driving to help break it in today so we drove all around for quite awhile shopping & such. We went & looked at 3 places for furniture for the livingroom, we've been looking but hadn't decided anything yet. We looked at two additional places & then went back to the first place we had looked & ended up buying furniture there, so now we've got until next Friday to get our old stuff out of there so they can deliver the new. Wow, I'm just floored, a new car & new furniture in one day, that's got to be a record for my DH. He makes me wait for months or years or whatever & then when he's ready to buy he's ready. I was just shocked that he bought the most expensive furniture of the 3 places too, but he agreed with me that you do get what you pay for. We haven't bought any new furniture together since we've been married, the stuff we've been using I bought before we met. He also told me today that I can use our income tax refund money to pay for materials for my coop. What? Shocked again.

We got home this afternoon & DH decided since it was already so late he might as well just take the whole night off work. I went over to check on the kittens & you know I had reservations about leaving the pups out today because Lily has been playing with the kittens & I had a bad feeling. When we came home we found one of them dead in the backyard, sad. So we went back out tonight & I got what Candace told me to, some BBs for our gun so I can sting her butt the next time she does something like that. This dog just has got to learn boundaries some way some how. I don't want to hurt her, just teach her that she does have to listen to what I say & respect the rules here. Jasmine you can tell no & she gets it, but not Lily you can tell her over & over & it doesn't get through. She has to have some consequences for the things she does or she just isn't going to learn I guess. The things I have tried to this point have not made enough of an impact, so there has to be something that can get through to her. She is my problem child for sure. I'm not ready to give up on her, but it is frustrating to no end. I know a lot of people probably would have given up & re-homed her, but I would rather not do that. She is a very likeable pup, just way too ornery & stubborn for her own good.

Trish, Yay for the coop

but really sorry to hear about the kitten

. Sounds like your pup needs to learn a few manners.

Funny pic of the day: Onyx found her new roosting spot.

We let the chicks and the ducks out together today, in preperation for moving them outside. They didn't do too bad. The Pekins picked on the chicks a bit, but nothing the chicks couldn't handle. They just pecked them right back and then ran.

(can you tell which chick is the photo hog. She won't be in the pen when we are there. She has to be out with us.)
Notice that we've started using blankets. The poops got too big. LOL

Ivy, the goats are adorable. I hope tomorrow's a better day for you!

Josie, Molly is so pretty.

Karen, here's a picture of the kids from last night. I love the Golden Girls and we already have a Sophia, so it worked out just right. You can see the fuzz sticking out from their necks in this picture, but you can't see what's still on their backs. Dorothy's the camera shy chicken.

Hey Hawkeye, I am just coming back on. Been a few weeks since I have read anything. I got sent to National Guard Bureau in Arlington with the guard the end of February early March and while I was there, our house in southeast Kansas got hit by a burst- 120 mile wind. Took off most of our roof in back and took out my daughter's window. The power was out for 12 hours. I had hatched chicks just before I left so my husband was more worried about them than the three incubators I had going. One tiny one with about a dozen eggs, a medium size one with 13 duck eggs, and the large one with a few goose eggs. He took the chicks to work and just left the incubators be. It was still chilly the last part of February/early March so I imagine they cooled down quite a bit, especially the big one as it is in a sun room that has full windows on all sides. I told him they would reset by themselves and to just leave the eggs in until I get home. All the chicken eggs hatched but one (which is fairly normal) and I think four out of seven goose eggs hatched. Which is also fairly normal. All of the duck eggs hatched and they had been put in two sets about 10 days apart. I wouldn't sweat it too much...Of course when our finished basement flooded the next week due to both sump pumps not working during the downpour, I was about to lose it.

This morning the straw bales in the run are sprouting little black muchrooms with white stems. Is there a reason to be concerned about them? I can post a picture if that would help. I removed most of them, but I'm worried that they might be dangerous for the girls if they pick up stems or caps on their feathers and feet and then groom themselves.

I wouldn't worry about it - my straw bales are doing the same. The chooks seem to know what is safe to eat and what isn't. I've actually been (unintentionally) growing mushrooms/toadstools for several weeks and haven't seen any evidence that the girls are eating them.

Ivy, very frustrating about the gate and the Dr's office. Your new little goats are adorable! Great color on them, too! Soooo cute!! :)

Trish, YAY on the new car and furniture all in one day! That is so exciting! We got new living room furniture last year and it sure is nice to have stuff that looks decent! ha! Sounds like you had fun breaking in the car, at least. Sorry about the dead kitty, I would be furious about that. Good thing your pup didn't go back for more and just the one.

Tweety, great pictures!! I think your barred rock is going to be the head honcho in your coop. I know my barred rocks are at the top of the order. They are the ones that pick on everyone else. Glad to see you are using towels on the floor! LOL I bet that makes clean up a lot easier.

Cherwill, what kind of chicks are those? They are really cute in that in-between stage where they are fluff and feathers and kind of gawky looking.

Patricia, oh wow, I'm so sorry about your roof and the window!! What a mess you came home to! Thank you for sharing the story about the power being off for 12 hours.. I'm a little astonished that they were okay for being cold for 12 hours. That would NOT happen to me, my luck is much, much too bad for that. ha! And sorry about your basement! That is terrible!!!! I went through a flood once. When I was a kid, we lived on the Ninnescah River and it had flooded many times without getting too close to the house. But when I was in college (still living at home) we had the big 100 yr flood for that river and it came up around the house and just poured right into our basement. We had no idea how it came in like that-- it was a solid foundation. ANyway-- the people down the hill from us had to be rescued by the National Guard and we stayed put because of the horses and animals we had and we were a little better off. When it was all said and done, we had 4 feet of water in our basement and it was scary! We had to have it pumped out by great big pumps we rented. On the up side-- we ripped everything out down there, and even ripped out everything upstairs-- all the carpet, baseboards, drywall, etc. Totally remodeled the house. The down side-- we lost all of our furniture and keepsakes. I had all of my Yearbooks, winter clothing, childhood treasures, etc down there at the time (as did my parents). Nothing was salvageable since it was muddy stinky nasty river water. Everything was BLACK and wouldn't wash out. Since then, I've appreciated the fact that I don't have anything left over from my childhood-- keeps my house clean. My DH has more stuff than I do! And he's pretty good about not keeping much. And after that, I realized it's all just "stuff" anyway. We spent most of our time during the floor slogging up to our waists, fighting strong current in our yard dragging the horses and animals across the fields to higher ground and saving lives instead of our stuff in the house. I think I got my bad luck from my parents.......

Sharol-- no idea about the mushrooms! I'm not a fan of them anyway, so my thought is that they'd be bad for chickens, but I don't know that for a fact! Could be my own bias against them.
