Ok so on the Ameraucana thread under breeds and genetics, there is a newly posted video of a hen crowing. What the heck!

OH no, I hope the flipping over turkey thing is not caused by genetics! If that is the case, I wouldn't want to breed them either. Perhaps you can look into that further. Trish, I really like the idea that HeChicken saw-- the poults in cups! What a hilarious thought, but I've seen them stick chicks in cups for their feet. Yeah, I hope this is just a nutritional problem instead.

Trish, sounds like you aleady had a big day. I'm not doing anything-- my stomach is now upset and I'm trying not to move too much. Bleah. Congrats on your DH winning the meat! I'd be all for that! Is this like the summer sausage kind of thing or frozen steaks and such? Either way, that is a nice prize!! If it's summer sausage... I'd be breaking out the wine, cheese and crackers and a movie to enjoy it with!

NO WAY!!! really? Can you post the link to that?? I wanna see!

Our silkie thread says that a silkie can mimic a crow-- but it's not really a typical boy "crow"... apparently some hens can throw their voices. Although having said that... that is NOT from first hand experience and I can't think of anyone I've talked to that has witnessed it first hand either. I just wonder where all of this comes from and if they can prove it. So I must see this video! LOL!!

Hawkeye, I hope you feel better soon, that's a bummer.

Danz, I tried to do some searching about his problem, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of reliable information about it. It seems that nobody knows that much about why it occurs, but there isn't a lot of information pointing to any genetic thing. On one study they seemed to conclude that younger flocks may have a higher incidence, but really no conclusive reason or answers. It doesn't seem to be something that has been studied that much or that long, so it's kind of one of those mysteries it seems. The lady I got the eggs from says she hatches out a lot of eggs from these birds & has only seen this happen on a couple of poults, so I don't know. There is a lot of speculation out there as to why it occurs, but not a lot of concrete scientific evidence.

HeChicken, I never could find the post you were talking about from the person using the cups. I know some people have set them in a tiny box or even carried them in their pocket all day, yuk. I thought I would try sitting one especially bad one in a cup for awhile, but I hate to leave it like that for hours while I'm gone tonight. It's strange because sometimes they seem worse & other times they seem better. The little black spanish does seem to be somewhat better today. From reading some of the posts from people it seems like if you can keep them alive for a few days they do seem to "outgrow" it at some point & then are OK. The trick I guess is to keep them alive long enough. I do have them on sav-a-chick in their water, which I read people were using & the vitamin E capsules a couple times a day. So we'll just see where this all goes I guess. I hope I can get them out of this hatcher soon so I can get it cleaned up & ready for my next big batch of eggs due to go in on Weds.

Well I need to start getting my animals fed & watered early so I can make myself presentable for tonight. This is one of those things you want to go to but yet almost dread at the same time. Have a good night!

CONGRATULATIONS IVY!!! You must be so proud and congrats to your son for his hard work!!!! He must be one brilliant kid!!!

Roman/Hawkeye- NO WAY!! I can't believe that!!!! I had a silkie hen that did a loud "call" that sounded kinda rooish but not a real crow! Well darn....what is the world coming to, crowing hens. Roman I think it still is a problem if you have neighbors that will report you because it doesn't matter if its a hen or a roo, if its making noise it will bother people and they will complain. I assume that is why roos are banned in most cities anyway, just because of their racket. I know several folks in Wichita that have roos and nobody complains. In fact I sold a buff brahma roo to a mail man that lives in the city and he said his elderly neighbors were so sad when his roo died of old age that he told them he would get another. They missed his morning greeting to the world!!!

Trish - here you go:

It was a page back from the current page.

RVRoman - thanks for posting that! I had heard that hens occasionally crowed but have never seen hard evidence. That hen must do it a lot for her to be out there with a video camera. That sounded like a pretty real crow too - if I'd had my eyes closed, I would have believed it was a roo.

Ivy - congrats for your son. What an awesome achievement!

Well, that was a first for me. That chicken definitely had a "hen talk" and then a crow. She looks like she is pretty young.. not quite mature. I am actually wondering if she is one of those genetic mixups that have both male and female sex organs. What do you call that? Hemaphodite or something like that.

Last year I had an ameraucana that I thought all along was a pullet. I almost agreed to sell too many pullets thinking this one was a pullet. It was nearly fully matured before I realized it was actually a very slow maturing rooster. It was definitely all rooster, though. Certainly never laid an egg. I think it would be interesting to see if that crowing pullet actually lays an egg in the future.

Wonders never cease.

Thanks for the congrats on my son. I'm still flying high with the news. He will have a couple months off before he starts med school in mid July. I know I won't see him often then. Seems like I never see the boys enough!
