Oh my gosh JosieChick, don't tell me that. Do you sell hatching eggs? (Say no, please say no.

) But really, do you?

Karen, you made me LOL! My mom does MOPS, too, and she said the same thing -- where was this when her kids were little?

I appreciate the comments on the pros and cons of buying this new place. Unfortunately, we were too late. DH called and it was a foreclosure house. Instead of trying to sell it the conventional way, they opened up a period of time for taking bids. That window was already closed by the time we were able to speak to the man handling it. If we get lucky, no one will have offered a high enough bid; there's some rule about throwing out any bid that isn't within a certain percentage of the already good asking price. Somehow, I think at least one of those 11 bidders will have gotten it right. I really did love the property, just not the house. I was seeing what I could do with the land, but not yet with the house. I would have loved not being in a town; I know what you all mean when you're talking about sitting on the deck just enjoying the surroundings. I also know what you mean, Ivy, about leaving a place you've put so much into. We've put in 10 years and lots of hard work and money here, and to leave it for a house we weren't sure of was one of our concerns. This one felt like home the minute we walked in. I was looking forward to getting some "Welsh Summers" at the other place, though.

Chickies & Hawkeye, we have a catalpa tree in the back yard; it was the one I'd ever seen. It can be messy, but I love how it smells when it's flowering, and when the flowers drop, it looks like we had a popcorn accident all over the back yard. Why would anyone "joke" about having seedlings when he doesn't? That's not funny at all, just stupid.

Ivy, I know what you mean about the pictures. If it's something that can't be retaken 5 times until I've gotten it right, I make DH take the pictures. I don't if I would have had the guts to tell my boss it was my dogs that tore up hers. It's good that she realized it wasn't something you could have prevented and that her dog was where it shouldn't have been, and I'm glad her dog will be OK.

Hawkeye, I love the ugly phase when chicks are half fuzz and half tiny feathers sticking out. That silkie was darn cute. A few years ago I could have given you tons of black walnut seedlings. DH cut the tree down because my lips swell up if I eat black walnuts and he was sick of battling the mess it made all over the deck and yard.

HEChicken, the Craig's list ad is gone, but it sure was funny...the dog can go too! DH and I look at everything from storage sheds to children's playhouse as a potential chicken coop. Having chickens has really warped our thought process.

Trish, I'm glad your granddaughter was able to get her tooth fixed, but what a heartbreaking thing to watch her be so upset about her dad leaving.

Lizzy, maybe you could market duck juggling and chasing as a workout program!

Danz, my nieces used to go around the yard gathering up catalpa beans, grass and flowers to arrange on frisbies (or in the dogs' water bowl) as "dinner." They were pretty artistic with their plating, too! Those birds are gorgeous, wow. I hope your back gets better; I had sciatic pain and some other problems for 2 years. I'm still having problems with my lower back, but it's so nice not to have the sciatica because it's just miserable. Be careful getting that load of feed; we all seem to have a tendency to come home with feed AND chicks ...

Tweety, what cute little fluffballs, even if they are dirty! Your mosh-pitting chicks reminded me of the first time I threw a grub in the chicken pen. We had 7 chickens at the time and they all ran in, grabbed a mouthful and ran off in different directions. In about a second and a half, that grub had been divided into 7 pieces and completely disappeared.

Ginnylea, welcome! Pictures are always good.

Avery, your DH is a hoot with his convoluted reasoning. I think I'd pose dilemmas to him just hear his responses!

We mowed a little yesterday then worked a bit at the community garden. I pulled the last of the first planting of radishes (including some Easter Egg radishes that look like lavender carrots!) and we planted a butternut squash. Our evenings are free again because DH and our nephew got the car fixed last night and he was able to return home! He and his girlfriend are very happy and it cost them a tiny fraction of the $600 the mechanic shop was estimating. Today I'm making a graduation cake for another nephew. It's cooling right now and I scanned and enlarged the Viking from his invitation. Hopefully I can make something that looks like it on the cake!

Whew! Made it through 60+ posts, although there have probably been 10 more since I started this reply.

Ha ha! That would definitely be a challenging workout, especially when it comes to the duck running from both you AND the dog OR you trying to chase the dog and the duck simultaneously when they're going in different directions!

Trish, Hope things are going better for you today.

Tweety, I haven't even looked at these stupid papers yet. I didn't realize I had to sign up for medicare so I hope I didn't toss anything important. Is there any one who shows you what to do with these? anyone you can go to for advise? I pay over $800 a month for my insurance coverage. I understand I will also have to pay for medicare? Is that right? I hate to loose my current insurance because I am afraid it will be like life insurance. There'll be so many pre-existent conditions they won't cover if I change. I have blue cross through my ex employer that I carried over as a retiree. I get part of that paid because of years of service. But not much. It is taken out of my retirement check. I had no idea I had to have medicare until Blue Cross said I would now be covered by them as a secondary payer. That bites. I'm not even sure why I have to have it at this point. I'm not even 60 yet.
I've got a hatcher full of chicks I need to get moved out. Lots of guineas yelling and a bunch of baby chicks. I had to cull most of the duck eggs that were in there. I decided that most of those had come from the incubator that I accidentally turned down for over 24 hours. They were nearly all full formed but apparently had died. I have all three of my incubators completely full and I need to get some more eggs in. I don't have any more coming out for 4 more days. I guess I'll just be holding eggs for awhile.
I need to find some room in the brooder too. I guess I am going to have to move some of these older chicks outside regardless. I would rather separate them into pens to keep track of them. Ihave enough panels to make another pen or two but no houses to move into them.
I've got to wash eggs and get them to town today, check on my dad, etc. It's going to be another full day. DH finally got the post holes drilled for the first pen with the new building. I really need to be out there working on that as well.
I discovered a bunch of eggs under the front porch that didn't get hatched and they are going bad. I've got to hold my breath, get on my belly and see if I can get those out of there without an explosion! They are drawing flies. Not a job I am looking forward to doing!
Help! I need more of me!
I am so sorry for you having to deal with stinky eggs! That is one part of the chickens I am not looking forward too... I know it will happen, but that smell sends my stomach flipping!!!!

Sorry about the Medicare bit too. I absolutely despise red tape and insurance is the WORST....

Thanks for the info on the Mille Fleurs. I am fine if they stay solid colors. They are such sweet birds, hop on to my feet and fly to my shoulder.... in search of treats of course :) They make my kids happy.

Okay, going off memory here, and trying to remember what I wrote this morning, if I skip you, so sorry!! :(

Karen, don't think you'd want to make silkies into a dual purpose meat project. They have black skin, black meat and black bones!! HOw on earth would you know if you have it cook thru, and then it would look like spoiled meat before you even got it cooked up.
sickbyc.gif
That is a dominant gene too-- so even if you crossed them, you're going to get black meat and bones. I think I'll just stick to keeping them as pets! LOL
Believe it or not Hawkeye95, My first experience with a Silkie was seeing it in soup while in China adopting my son..... It was definite culture shock for sure and no.... I couldn't eat it :) I did eat silk worm and pigeon though.... :) No way are we going to eat our 3 Silkies. I hope we get to keep them. My kids wanted them because they are chickens they saw in China. Both were adopted at almost 4 yrs old and they had seen Silkies.... but not alive :-( They like them much better as pets!!

Here is a pic I took today of the silkies. - Hawkeye - see how dirty they are! LOL. I keep wanting to give them a bath! They get pine shavings stuck on their feathers and that's dried crumble all over their little faces! LOL. It's hilarious, but I cringe at showing pics of them cuz they are getting the awkward feathers and are messssssy!

Too cute!!! We have a white silkie about the same age. Our other 2 we got at 8 weeks, so I am enjoying our little Ruth Rose's awkward stage :)

HEHE.. Sorry - the language of a wife of a former rock-star. LOL. Mosh-pitting is where people, during a band playing, run into circles, check bumping, pushing, and generally act rowdy and unruly - running over anything in their path. That's what they were doing. Running around and screaming with food in their mouth as if they'd had their heads cut off! LOL. it was hilarious!
I absolutely love watching the chickens get excited over treats.... It is my therapy after a long day with busy kids at school and difficult ADULTS...... Makes me laugh every time!

My first experience with a chicken had me deathly afraid of them. When the kids wanted some I had originally told them no way.... gave in if they did the work Ha! When I was about 6 or 7, I had stayed overnight with a friend who had chickens. Her mom had asked her dad to go get a chicken for dinner and he went out to chop its head off. I went out to watch, and knew NOTHING about chickens. Well... he chopped it's head off, which in itself scared me, but the darned thing ran my direction and I ran all the way home!! Had nightmares galore about headless chickens!

It has been fun conquering my fears :)

I imagine we will have to butcher some after I start hatching unless someone wants to buy a bunch of silkie roos as pets. They are kinda naughty little buggers, chasing the big hens all over the place and hanging from their sides so I don't think I could have more than one or two!
Chinese restaurants, the real kind, not the Buffet kind will buy them. I know they sell the Silkie soup in KC, prob do in Wichita also. My kids will be devastated if their pets end up as roosters though, since we cannot have roosters where we live. I can't go that option. Don't know what I will do yet either .....

Noise..... Can anyone tell me how noise my chickens will be making? I have a neighbor who hates my standard poodles, who are rarely outside! He works nights and sleeps during the day. Hates if my dogs bark at all, but has been told by the police, who he HAS called that dogs are allowed to bark occasionally, especially during the day. If I don't have roosters outside, will it be fairly quiet except when they lay eggs? What time of day do the generally lay eggs? Worrying here.....
