I have about 30 minutes of down time before I have to get to it again. Had a nice visit with the Aunt/Uncle & Cousins and got to show off my chickens, ducks, rabbit and one little turkey. By the way, peeps, that little turkey with the unabsorbed yolk is still alive! It's little feathers are coming right in and it's perky even. I can't believe it's made it this long. The opening is shrinking so I have hope. I've kept Vit E on the opening and given it a drop or two per day. It's eating and drinking just fine with the ducks and it's really cute snuggling in with them. Hope it makes it. I really like that little thing.

Wednesday afternoon for the field trip, trippers? Sounds fine with me, how about you guys? It'll be fun to meet up!

Karen are you sure you want to have a bunch of people show up. I mean that is asking a lot of you... just sayin'. I would love to come to your place. Not sure I am up to the drive though. If several of these other people were coming though I think it would be nice to meet everyone.
I just sold 25 chicks. The midsized ones. The guy counted what I had left in that bin and there were still 17. I didn't even put a dent in the numbers I have. These people bought a bunch from me before and were super pleased with them. So when they saw my add they showed back up. I gave them a discount for buying that many.
I am sure I have at least 100 little chicks plus tons of older ones.

Karen, I think Wednesday this week works for me, but then I haven't checked with DH about any plans yet!

Hawkeye, we have a snowball bush beside the front porch. It's actually shaded most of the day and what sun it gets occurs in late afternoon. It finally, this year, looked as beautiful as we'd always hoped it would. It's been there maybe 8 or so years. It has a strange growth habit, probably from reaching for the sun. It's bushy way at the bottom, but grows long, leggy stems up from the middle. It always gets the snowballs, but this year it really had lots. At some point every year, a lot of the leaves seem to curl up. They don't die or anything, so I guess it's not a big problem.

No plans today until later. We have a graduation party from 4-6 (I'm providing the cake, so I have to be there ON TIME as I've reminded DH several times now

) and the actual graduation at 7.

I would love to meet the gang of you and maybe we could all bring a goody and have lunch or something? Unless there are plans made already? I must be a poor reader...

Wow!!! This is a busy place full of busy people

I can't figure out how to quote or multi quote from my phone and stink at recalling names and matching them to posts :-(

But.... It is perfectly OK to laugh at my headless chicken childhood terrors I do! My kids think it is hilarious and are fear free, so all is good!

I love the coop plans that were posted! I have more chickens than I had planned for- had just planned for 6 LF, and have 8 LF and 8 bantam now.... So I am having to add shelter inside my privacy fence run, but am going to wait a bit. Since I have metal mesh on the base of the privacy fence to keep my dogs from digging under it if they chose to while I am not home I am not worried about them spending time at night outside. They have shade and a roost is being added today under the shade. By winter and time to protect them from the cold, I may have a better idea what I am doing and how many actually get to stay- if they are too noisy etc...My neighborhood association allows them in the covenants, but after listening to a few egg songs on your tube... if they do this a lot, I may have a few neighbors saying NO. :-( Thanks everyone for your input! I am glad that song wont be sung all day long. We may have a chance

I am jealous of that field trip! My kids would love to see another crew bigger than they are Who no doubt have more animal chores than they do too School is still in session for me though and it is going to be a CRAZY week.....

That chocolate mint sounds very interesting! I will have to look for some. We have spearmint and I love how it smells. My kids are all happily weeding our garden right now, thrilled to see their efforts growing. I never would have dreamed they would be thrilled about tomatoes and blueberries!

Hi, Just found this thread for Kansas. I live about 30 minutes south of Topeka. After a hiatus of about 20 years I finally got some more chickens, guineas and 2 ducks last summer. I had a tick disease and was in the hospital for 4 days last June so it was time to get more guineas!! We live on a farm so we free range our birds most of the time. I love chickens which is why I didn't stop after I got the guineas -- just saw some chickens and couldn't help myself. Then I saw a couple of cute Ancona ducks and hubby likes them too! Just recently bought a Cornish banty hen in hopes that she will go broody and hatch out some guinea eggs for me.

and glad you found the Kansas thread! Feel free to jump on in and join the discussions. Um, on the tick disease, do you mind if I ask what the symptoms were? I've removed 4 attached ticks already this year (don't they make a Frontline for people???) and have also have a few days feeling excessively lethargic and exhausted, and have had some concerns that the two are related. On the other hand, I'll have an "off" day and then three good days follow it so perhaps it is something else altogether.

Well today we got 2 sides on the coop of the paneling we are using for the outside. Two more and I get to paint the coop!!! I put 2 ft tall poultry netting at the base of my fence around the garden to keep the rodents out and the chickens from getting out through the slats. I also picked up pvc pipe so I can do hoops over my raised bed boxes and then cloak those in the soft poultry netting. I also got a good pint of mulberries off my trees, We have lived here for 6 years now and I just found out we have mulberry trees. Only two, but thats enough for me! As soon as we fixed up the garden so we could put the chickens in and not have them escape, I put Chicklet and Susan B Anthony out there. They loved it, I finally got ahold of Leroy and put him out, he managed to escape when the kids were playing with our make shift gate, and our dog was having a blast playing with him. Casey loves the chickens, he has been so good with them from the get go. He is the one that Leroy used to ride around on when he was a little tiny chick. Well once I was ready to get the chickens out and back in there coop, Casey just came right in and herded them into my arms. My "hunting" dog found his true calling as a chicken herder! But the good news is the girls were so into the weeds between all the raised beds, they didn't even pay attention to the great greens in side the beds.


OHand Helen Keller started crowing today! So now he is Herman. I think.


I try to keep up with all the posts so I can respond and make real conversation, but my brain is completely fried after this semester. I had Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Bioethics and Statistics. Managed to pass somehow, but that was seriously the hardest semester I have ever had!

rvroman, wow that was quite a load at school this semester, congrats on making it through that! How many roosters have you ended up with now? Do you actually have any hens left in the bunch? I wish there was a way to sex them earlier, but for most breeds there just isn't until they start getting a bigger comb or crowing. Some are pretty obvious early on & others aren't. I'm trying to figure out right now what my little Ameraucana is that I kept. I need both a rooster & a hen, but I don't know what I need to keep unless I can figure out what this one is. It's still too young to tell yet.

I went out & caught all of the little chicks I just hatched in the last few days to count how many of each I had & I somehow ended up with 6 Ameraucanas & 6 sexlink/mixes or whatever you want to call them. HeChicken, it is kind of weird though because some of them have white wingtips & some don't, so I don't know if that is indicative of sex or not. I know usually one has a white spot on the head, I think the males & the females are all black if I have that right. But with these there are some all black & some with the white wing tips. I'm excited about my other turkey eggs due to go in the hatcher next week from that guy we got eggs from. How are yours doing? I don't plan to candle mine until Tues.when I put them in the hatcher. They go in on the 25th day right? It's kind of different, I'm used to hatching chicken eggs.

Hawkeye, how are your little Silkies doing that you have hatched? Do you have any new pics of them? If you decide you want to get a rabbit or two I'm sure I will have some. I have 4 baby chinchilla rabbits right now. They think they're big rabbits now because they can hop in & out of the next box. They're so darned cute, just little miniatures of their momma. I need to get new pics of them. I have a mini rex doe due to have her babies on Monday. I put her nest box in her cage today with straw in it & she immediately started re-arranging it, so I let her do her thing. They make like a tunnel in the hay or straw & then line it with their hair from their belly that they pull out. By the time they get done there is this soft cloud for the babies to snuggle into.
