Consolidated Kansas

Just for a reference here are the 3 breeds that I have that are similar:

Speckled Sussex, mine have more feathers:

Brown Leghorns:

Welsummer, this one is younger than the rest (this is my lone baby I hatched out from the eggs I had shipped):

I had 3 little deer ticks --- that's what I get for picking gooseberries and forgetting to spray myself. I fell down on the creek bank twice and that is prob when they got me. I didn't find them for 3 days-- they are so tiny they are the size of a pin point. Anyway I began with flu symptoms about 7 days later and a friend told me I had better get to the doctor-- I just thought it was a summer cold at first. But no -- ended up in the hospital for 4 days and taking antibiotics for 3 weeks.

ugh!
I am wanting more guineas and hope one of my chickens goes broody.

Danz, Yes I did get my guineas and Anconas from you -- just saw you on the FB - Poultry Swap group. I am wanting more guineas -- Will you be at one of the swaps in Topeka? I would love to have a female Ancona too. Also kinda looking for Cochins that might make good broodies for me so I can hatch out more guineas. Too lazy to use an incubator.

Glad we connected. I still have your phone number so will call you one of these days. Kare

My BIL is in St. Francis ICU with Erlichiosis caused by deer ticks (and some others including dog ticks). Near renal failure and brain swelling. Nasty thing. I'm glad you got better.

Kare, I have several hens that insist on being broody if you aren't particular about breed. I have some young cochin pullets if you want to wait or some older birds that keep hiding and hatching I've got about 30 guinea keets right now and many more in the incubator. I had a guy wanting the first 50 I hatched but he hasn't returned my phone calls so I guess I am going to go ahead and start selling them.
Just sold 25 Anconas to chickies, duckies, etc but have probably another 80 eggs or so to go in the hatcher this week.
I hope to make it to the premier swap the last Saturday of the month but not sure if I will make it.It all depends on what is going on then.

I got more done today than I'd planned. That's a nice change!

I planted a sage because I killed my old one. It might have something to do with cutting it down to almost nothing and then deciding to relocate it about a week later. I found 19 of the strawberry starts from the ill-fated pallet and planted them in my old washtubs. Maybe a few of them will take off, who knows. I was out running around with my parents, so we stopped by the community garden and I watered there. Everything's looking good.

Hope everyone's having a good evening. I'm off to have dinner with the folks.

Sharol, that's awful for you BIL, I hope he comes out of it OK. I have so many ticks here, I'm always getting bitten. I was hoping the birds would take care of them. I read that turkeys & peacocks are good at eating them too.

I got the new top on the one rabbit hutch & got them apart today, it's a start.

Danz, I would love to get 2-3 of your broodies and I don't care what breed they are. I am more concerned with getting broodies setting on guinea eggs. Of course I may get overrun. Two of the guineas we got from you went broody but one wouldn't stay on the nest in the coop -- she preferred to roost with the others in the chicken house :( The other had her nest out in the hay field and got scared off and came back to the chicken house. I have them all locked up in the run now until they start laying again. Hopefully they will start a nest in the chicken house again. None of my easter egger hens nor my new little Cornish banty are broody at the moment. If I have time later in the week maybe hubby and I can come down. Will call you the day before. Kind of a crazy week so it might have to be the next week. Thanks!!

To tour karenS's garden spot and poultry farm (tiny poultry farm).

Where: PM me for address, located between Rose Hill and Derby, KS.

When: Wednesday, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Wby: Why not!

Bring finger food if you'd like, not mandatory. I'll have iced tea and lemonade on hand plus fruit and vegie platters. Just come and hang out, chat, and get to know the faces behind the names. If you cannot make this one, being as how it's a bit short of notice, do not despair. We will meet another time. Bringing little ones along is fine. Would love to have you!

Karen I *really* hope I can come. I have something on all day on Wednesday but it is a regular thing that is often canceled last minute and if that happens this week, I will definitely be there. Thanks for doing this!
