KarenS, so sorry you are still feeling so badly! I hate coming down with a bug or a cold when the weather is nice.

I feel so ignorant about everything, because all of you on this forum seem to know so much about all kinds of birds!! I just love a bird because of how pretty it seems to me and I don't really care what breed it is-- but that may change as I learn more about the different kinds of chickens. This broody Silver Lace Polish and Silver Lace Wyandotte cross I got from Danz, I just love her! She is so pretty. Then I saw Danz' Brahma's and fell in love with them. I think I need to quit going and looking at chickens. Perhaps if I keep reading these forums I will learn a lot more!!

Prairie that is chicken math! You just keep adding more and more. I like my mixed girls and some of those are definitely the prettiest chickens and the best layers. But since I sell chicks I need to breed some pure breds. I just hate the idea of penning every one up. It costs me more in food and I think it is harder on the health of the birds. I dunno I may be shooting myself in the foot to try to streamline what I have.
I had another Pheonix hen show up with a couple of chicks yesterday. She had been nesting in a book shelf in the barn.
I need to get eggs ready to take to town today. Also need to go take care of my Dad. He probably needs dishes washed etc.
I was hoping we'd get a fluke chance of rain last night but no luck.
Sounds like my mower is hosed. Nothing I did I guess. There's no compression in the engine. That means it will take months to get an operable mower again. The last one I had, DH took apart, ordered parts and never put back together. So I bought another one. Now it is hosed. Crap! Of course it is my fault because I end up doing all the mowing.
I have one more mower but it is kind of scary to use cause it sits up high and it feels like it will tip over. I would have to dig out of the barn with junk piled around it. That will for sure make it rain! It has to so the grass will grow like crazy!

Prairie, there will always be more to know, I think, for everyone, but there is also a lot of variation in how much you want to know or is necessary for you to know. For example, if you are into showing, you need to know a lot about that process, and if you are breeding you need to have an understanding of genetics. Me, where I grew up we always had a few chooks or ducks in the backyard for eggs, so when, as an adult, I got started again, my only goal was to have 4-5 chickens to provide my family with enough eggs. However while trying to decide on what breeds to get, I found it hard to narrow it down to the 4-5 I originally planned because there are so many neat colors of birds, and also there is the variation in egg color that appeals to me. I like knowing who laid each day based on what eggs I collect. It makes it especially easy to notice if there is a problem with one of them, if you suddenly stop getting that bird's egg - they might be molting or have some kind of health issue. So after starting with a few brown egg layers, my focus became getting a more colorful egg basket. But I am by no means an expert on genetics or showing. Don't worry about feeling you don't know much! And its okay to keep a bird just because you think she's pretty or like her. I have one hen I would never part with - and she's a "mutt"!

HeChicken and Danz -- Well you would think I would know more about birds because we raised hundreds when I was a kid but then I never thought about chickens other than the work involved! We just had a huge chicken house and I remember one old bantam rooster that would attack anyone in long pants. Think that is why I like skirts to this day and don't like bantams .............but then I bought a little black banty hen a few weeks ago and she is so cute. So there you go. Hubs can't say anything about all my little ladies cause he has cattle and mules and a horse just to give him something to do!

Hope you get the lawn mower fixed although it is so dry you might not need it for a month!

Hawkeye, how's that chick doing by now? Hope it's still hanging in there.

Sapphireblu, so sorry to hear about your EE, that's just awful.

HEChicken, I'm just so glad everything turned out alright. Funny how you stopped about where she jumped.

So, I ended up with 3 chicks out of the whole hatch and they are very noisy and busy little bees. Chicks are just so darn cute!

School's out and my house is full of kids. I'm always glad when school is out for the summer. I have adjusted my expectations and am behaving better today. I think I need a gold star or something.

Tazcat, how are things?

Danz, how are you feeling today? Are you sure you don't have strep? Better get it checked out, I'm thinking.

medawinks, it's amazing what some kids go through and are still just really great kids, isn't it?

Have a good day everybody!

prairie, for what it's worth, I've only been doing chickens since Feb. I just started with lots of them! Even though I'm still new and feel unsure of myself most of the time, I really love having the birds. They make me relax and smile like nothing else, just watching and listening to them. Maybe I should bring them in while I recover? LOL!

Prairie I raised chickens back in the 70's and when I think about it now it is a wonder any of them lived. We were so chicken dumb back then. When I decided to get chickens again I read every thing I could find about them. I'm not a person who enjoys reading unless I have developed an interest in something and then I can't get enough. Must be my adult ADD.

I learn every day. The problem is, the more you learn the more you want.
And I still can't go somewhere there are chicks without really wanting to buy more. It's crazy!

Prairie, we all keep learning all the time about chickens & other poultry, even if we have had them for years, I don't think you ever stop. I had chickens years ago when my son was little & we raised some other animals for meat, but I didn't think much about them at the time other than wanting eggs from them. I just got the ones I thought were pretty & gave us eggs. We did raise a few meat birds one year & had fresh chicken in the freezer for awhile.

Danz, I don't know if I told you or not, but I got some little Salmon Faverolle chicks this year to add to my flock & they're feathering out now & getting their feathered feet. They're so darned cute! The rooster is getting his color coming in & he's going to be pretty when he gets grown. They're about a month old now, but boy have they grown already. I was just standing out by their new pen admiring them when I went out to let the older chickens out. The older flock are very curious about the newcomers. My Speckled Sussex rooster was pacing back & forth yesterday outside their pen looking them all over, it was kind of funny. I figure by the time they're big enough to come out & join them they will think they're just part of the group. That's kind of what I did last year when I added some new ones, only I didn't have so many & they had a small pen inside the coop. This year I got more so I had to build the pen in the run, they're doing great out there though. I took my camera out yesterday to take a pic of the new pen & my chicks & wouldn't you know it my batteries were dead, so I still didn't get it done. I will have to change them out today.

HeChicken, they have these strap things you can hook into your seat belt & clip onto their collar. We got two of them for our little dogs for when we just go short distances. They're adjustable & you can make it so they can't go off the seat, but can move around. I would recommend that to you for your dog's safety in the car. I sure would hate to see you lose one again. I got mine off of eBay & they weren't expensive.

KarenS, I hope you feel better soon!

Well I don't know what I'm even doing sitting here I have so much to do today to get ready to leave, better get to it. I hope you all have a great day!

I left and went outside to feed. My cat wrote this. She must have been excited about something!

I'm not even sure how she did that. She must have had one foot on the o, 0,and - keys.
