Consolidated Kansas

okay, I don't have a lot of time, but I think my mare will be alright. She's managed to spend most of the day on her feet. She's limping and sore. I've been hunting for my bute, and looks like I'm going to have to go buy another tub of it. Ah well. But I was sooooo worried this was it for her. She is groaning a bit under her breath, she is in a lot of pain. So I'll get her meds tonight and see how she does tomorrow before I take her to the Dr. She's not limping like it's broke again.. just looks like she's feeling her night out. Sigh. Our 4-H meeting this morning went really well. I better run! Just wanted to update you all! :)

So glad it looks like she'll be ok. Thanks for updating us.

Josie, I hope I NEVER experience a rotten egg while incubating. From your description and others it doesn't sound like a walk in the park. In fact, my incubating days may be over. I'm hoping to let broodies do it for me from now on.

Not that an egg can't go rotten under a broody too but at least then I don't have an incubator to clean. Hugs to you for dealing with it.

Hawkeye- SO glad she is hanging in there!

HEchicken- It's WORSE if it explodes under a broody!!! Happened to me once and I had to wash the whole nest box out, wipe the other eggs off and give the hen a bath because she STANK!

I hate rotten eggs...I think I can still smell it...

I just went out to throw away the trash bag with the rotten egg and the pyrenees puppy had chewed through the trash bag and drug everything out of the bag all over the yard and ate the rotten egg!!! GROSS!

Somedays.......

LOL Josie I can't wipe the smile off my face. I know how that goes. I've had the exact thing happen here many times. I now have a burn barrel where all dead critters and unhatched eggs go just so the pup won't drag it into the yard.
I've had a very busy day. Texting back and forth with my daughter and granddaughter and going through miles of red tape to buy her a ticket to fly here. I did get a ticket purchased so I will have an 11 year old visiting for a couple of weeks. She is already asking about frogs and turtles in my pond. Heck I don't even know if it has water in it!
Then I went to town to take care of some business and never even got a chance to get eggs ready to sell.
I have 3 lavender chicks hatched so far. I am holding my breath hoping for a lot more.

Sapphire, I am wondering why you are keeping Sarge in a pen? He is old enough he should be out starting to work on the property. He wouldn't have all the puppy energy if he could run it off. Just wondering.
Heather congrats on your door working. Is it open this morning?
Yahoo! I have a lavender Orp egg pipped this morning. I am hoping for many more!!
I'm going to have a very busy day. I've got to take care of some things in town and I am also going to take some eggs into the farmers market and see if they sell. My restaurant buyers will be gone the next two weeks and that means tons of extra eggs I will need to sell. I can't feed these birds for free. If they sell well I'll be there the next couple of Fridays.
Well, I call it a pen, but it's as big as a back yard, lol. Being that he's just a pup and has no dog mentor, I wasn't sure it was the right time to let him out on his own. He gets to be out when we are out, but then we put him back in, or he just sits at the front door scratching at the screen door, whining and barking :( Maybe we should try again? Any advice would be appreciated.

I would try letting him out at night. Does he have access to get back to a dog house or protection somewhere? He should be out barking in the night at any sound or potential predator. He is young but he needs to get started working. I let Marshmallow stay out from the time she was 3 months old. She started pursuing predators at 5 months. Once he gets used to being out by himself he'll adjust. Pyrenees just have way too much energy to be kept penned. If you don't feel comfortable about the night time try at least evenings until bedtime.

Wow, Hawkeye! I am so glad your mare is OK!

Karen, I am so glad that there are other folks here who understand how difficult it can be to orchestrate opportunities for success for some kiddos! My son also does really well with solitary gardening chores. In fact that was one of the reasons that I undertook so much :) I really do not have a green tinge to any finger.... Or thumb :). I understand the paranoia about mites and other insects... I was just out looking for ditromaceous earth. Of course everyone in the store looked at me like I was NUTS and I did not find any.... I may try the oil thing too... I know, nutzo newbie, but YUCK! I don't want those under my bedroom window where my run is!

Josie, congrats on the new chicks and Orp eggs! Please post pics! Of the orps too when they hatch. I have never seen a lemon colored chicken... Are their eggs still brown? Yellow eggs would be cool :)

HEChicken, your chicken door sounds cool! I hope they all find their way in tonight! Not knowing if they all got it would be my problem and I would still be going out at night, but staying in bed in the morning would be cool! Wait.... I would have to be up with my early bird kids anyhow.... :)

Trish, hope you are on the mend!

Danz, I hope you have lots of little purple peeping pipsters! I cant wait to see pictures! Travel for kids is no easy feat any more. I hope you got it figured out. We are heading to Chicago to Shriner's soon and I am not too excited about that.... Sera is because it won't be surgery this time, but she doesn't know she will be at the dentist for lots of work. I am not busting her bubble yet.... The next surgery will be scheduled and knowing that already has her worried. Bone grafts are no fun and she knows that already. She may also need some work on her ankle to repair damage from the rickets and it may have to be pinned. She is a trooper though!

I'll try letting him out tonight. He does have access to his dog house, water and food. All I have to do is leave the gates to his area and the area fence around it open. He does bark at night, too,so I know he has the idea and is at least keeping predators at bay. LOL, this is hard for me, only having had indoor dogs >< I'll get the hang of it though! Thanks for being here for us :)

Medawinks. Premier Farm supply where the swap meet was carried 50 pound bags of DE dirt cheap. I bought 50 pounds for what I paid for a gallon jar elsewhere. They usually try to keep about 5 bags in stock at a time.
I'm waiting for more "purple" chickens. I do have some more pipped eggs. It is so hard not to interfere. I want those lemon cuckoos to hatch too but no pips on them yet.
