Consolidated Kansas

Well Josie I'm not much of a chicken selling machine these days. Just got a call from the guy that was going to buy the 20 hens. He says he still wants them but not right now. He just lost 5 hens to the heat and doesn't want to add a time bomb until the weather cools down. Actually I'm a bit relieved. I wasn't looking forward to chasing and caging hens in this weather. I might sell them but I don't want to kill them attempting it. I really hate to be poking more food down them though in the meantime. There's nothing much to eat here. The grass is turning crispy.
Most of my chicken sales is just by word of mouth. I've not sold a single bird using the poultry swap site. I guess I just don't live close enough to anyone to have them buy from me. I really do get tired of adjusting my schedule for cancellations though. I just pulled the rest of the eggs anyone was sitting on and put them in the incubator. I have a few dozen in there now that will probably ened up being a bunch of roosters. I put my 3 peacock eggs under a silver Pheonix hen cause she was sitting and seemed interested. I'll have to watch and see if she stays with them for a while. They may not be any good at this point anyway. I figured it was worth a try any way.
I used to advertize on craigslist quite a bit but it's not getting the results I would like. I get more people bothering me who really aren't interested than real buyers.
I am ready to stop hatching until fall. I never get tired of seeing chicks hatch but it's just pretty difficult to keep every one going in this heat.
I just fed back all the fresh eggs I gathered.

Danz, that's too bad he cancelled. I'd be bummed even though it is hot. I'd want them gone! LOL But it's understandable. I wonder whats up with the craigslist tire kickers. It's getting really annoying. I have sold a lot of things there. I never hold anything. Some calls and says they can't come out until Friday, I tell them that I'll let them know if it's still there. Usually not. But I've been selling baby stuff--- strollers, etc and it is sold and gone the same day I list it, usually. But these birds are hard to get rid of. If I could bear to eat black silkie meat, I'd just dress them out myself. But i can't do it. Anyone else is welcome to my free silkie roosters! Eat them or keep them! LOL

Thank you for the links! Going to go check those out!! I'm not close to the border, but for the right bird, it would be worth knowing about it. :)

This must be a bad week for cats. My favorite calico cat, Chloe came home with what we think was a gunshot wound. She managed to make it home somehow from where ever it happened, but she was in bad shape & died this afternoon. I had to go out & bury her in our pet cemetery in that heat. I'm so sad, this cat was the nicest, gentlest cat you could ever have, she would never have hurt a flea & didn't usually go very far from the house. We have a neighbor next door to us that hates cats & my DH thinks she did it. I have no proof of that other than the fact she has said repeatedly that she hates them & accused them of eating their chickens. I have tried to tell this woman that I have had cats for years & years in the past & recently & never had one eat a chicken ever. They go out & lay right by them in the yard or even go into the run & drink alongside them or eat treats with them. I'm just so sad about it.
I'm so sorry about your cat. One of my SIL's has an unreasonable neighbor like that; not much you can do about them.

Awww.. i'm so sorry to hear that Trish :(

Animals are so special. They love you without asking much in return.

My good (computerless) friend that raises Delawares here in Lawrence was asking me about GP's today. I guess she is looking for one that is old enough that she doesn't have to completely train - i.e. not a new puppy. Anyone know of any that are looking for a good home? She has over 100 acres and about 170 birds, LG and Guineas.

tweety, we have had several on the swap site, but I don't know of any right now. I'll let you know if I hear of one needing a home. Oh, I just saw this ad on CL for Wichita, http://wichita.craigslist.org/grd/3088527983.html. Tell her to check out that one, it's already trained.

I've just been totally bummed out today the rest of the afternoon. The heat is getting to me & my DH left in a sorry mood. He bought the wrong wood for the floor & now he's upset that he can't get it installed by himself & wanted me to come out after I just buried my cat & it was 110 in the shade. I already wasn't feeling well & I told him he waits until the hottest part of the day to go out & work & I just wasn't up to it. The coop is not going well as you can tell.

Awesome! I just called her and she's going to check it out! Thanks :)

Ouch, yeah - today is a rough day to be doing any outside work, let alone carpentry in a fowl mood. It was hot burying Abigail yesterday, so I understand that.

I got the AC fixed yesterday around noon. The repairman came and as I suspected it was the capacitor that had blown. All is well now and we have a cool house!

Coop v2.0 Update: The inside is done!!!!!! I moved the girls in last night and moved the old coop out of the yard so they wouldn't go to it any more. Other than the extreme heat they appear to be doing well with it. The true test will come this evening when I go to put them away. I have updated the album with pics:

Glad you were able to get your AC fixed! And the coop looks nice :)
Sorry to hear that Trish. I'll growl at the Post Office with you. This is not the time of year to loose live shipments!

So, if ya'll will remember my sadness about my kitty - We had her put to sleep this afternoon. She got better for a couple weeks, but the past couple days went down hill really fast. She could no longer control her bladder or bowels and was just deficating in her bed. It kills me to have a pet put to sleep, but I know it was the right thing to do and she's in a much better place over the rainbow bridge. 14 years of a great life and many adventures. She'll be missed, that's for sure.
So sorry, Tweety. We have an old boy going on 18 this year. He doesn't show any signs of stopping anytime soon, but I worry often how much longer I get to have with him.
SO here is a weird one for you guys! My pea eggs came this morning and they were in shredded paper and wrapped in bubble wrap like most shipped eggies arrive but, wait for it, they were also wrapped in tin foil!
hu.gif
Is that to protect them from the x ray machine???? They looked like baked potatoes!
:hmm TIN FOIL??? LOL, that's a new one.

Thought I'd jump over here and say howdy neighbors!! We live about 8 miles south of the Kansas line so we're up there all the time.
Welcome!

I know there was one more new member that I missed, I apologize

to you, too!

Trish, Sorry to hear about the bad luck with the post office and the Cream Legbars :(

I know I multi quoted a bunch of other posts, but now they have disappeared :/
Danz, those chicks are gorgeous! Hopefully next year I will be able to get some LO and LC, they are just beautiful!

Hawkeye, We are real fortunate with the big tree in front of the chicken house and there is also a line of cedar trees the length of the run on the right hand side of the chicken house and the chickens love to make their dust baths in the dirt under the trees. Don't tempt me with more birds --- I originally only wanted guineas ...................................no chickens or ducks. Now I have 10 chickens and 4 ducks along with my 10 guineas. Problem is that I have a big enough coop for lots more!

Aussie has 15 guinea eggs under her and she is due on 7/4 so hopefully I will have more guineas in a few days!!

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<WOW-- Sure wish my chicken yard was this nice and shady!! I need some TREEEEES!! Sheesh. Anyway, the chute looks great! You have a nice big chicken house there,,, very envious! I'd fill it with silkies in no time flat. hehe!!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
