Consolidated Kansas

Hey Checoukan-I've got some boxes packed for you!
smile.png
It looks like DH, Ry and girlfiend and I will be down Aug. 5th. It depends on when Ry gets here, so that may change.. DH and Ry want to go to the demolition derby at Falls City on the 4th. Timing might not work out for the one down there.

Welcome to all the newbies! It's good to see new people are interested in poultry and BYC.

I agree with Danz and Checoukan. Herding dogs are for herding, not guarding.

Hawkey-I tried to ask this before, but my whole post was lost. I read how your birds did at the fair, but I didn't read how your son did in showmanship. Great pictures, BTW.

So sorry for everyone that has lost birds to heat and predators. I did loose a couple of my best birds during the very intense heat. I think there just wasn't enough ventillation in those corner pens.

Hello to everyone else. Gosh, there has been so much posted it's hard to remember who all said what.

I've been getting ready for 2 auctions, a move across the state, changing jobs etc. I am happy I got a lot done yesterday, but it just makes me realize how much more there is to do. Sometimes I think I should pare down a lot more! I actually had thoughts of selling ALL my chickens this morning, but I really don't want to do that so I won't. I am, however, going to sell a few more things.

Anyone interested in a GQF cabinet hatcher? Checoukan, you know the one. This is an older one. It is RED. This thing has run like a top ever since we got it. It keeps great temps and has never given me any problems whatsoever. It's just older and uglier than the new ones. I would keep it, but gee, I just really don't need two of them. At our new place I probably won't be hatching in the numbers that I have in the past, so I guess I don't need it. I will be asking $300. for it. All the parts are standard GQF.

Today's to-do list:

Replace the foam insulation in the upper ends and part of the roof of the coop. The sparrows are tearing it to shreds. I'm covering it this time with cheap underlayment plywood. DH is doing the cutting on the table saw. I'm about halfway through the repair project. It is a metal building, and gets WAYY too hot and cold without some insulation. Take that, spatzies.

Of course I had to pause the job to let the girls lay their eggs. Those big floppy strips of insulation freak them out completely. They were ok with the little ones, but all Ihave to do is pick up a 2x8 strip of pink insulation, and every flees the coop screaming about terror from the sky. Silly chooks.

We are having stuffed peppers (the peppers from the garden) for dinner tonight, so I need to get some picking done up there. Yesterday I cleaned out the last of the potatoes (6 hills yielded a 4 gallon bucket of very nice potatoes. I also need to til the areas where the plants are done (peas, potatoes) to get the weeds knocked down. It has been so hot that I've been neglecting my weeding. I just wish the beans would do better. They get watered regularly -- my water bill was outrageous last month -- but they just don't set on new beans when it is this hot. I have tons of zuchini and summer yellow squash. I'm slicing and drying it for squash chips for fall and winter. I may freeze some too, but we really don't like squash that has been frozen much, so that might be a waste of time. The tomatoes are geting going, too, so that will be another garden project. It isn't a large garden (20 x 24 or so), but I plant pretty intensively and then water. With the great chicken fertilizer, everything is doing pretty well considering the heat.

Back to chickens. I'm getting about 5-6 eggs a day from my 10 layers. I have one who isn't laying at all - Welsumer, so I think it is the heat, but she is looking a bit ragged, so she may also have something else going on. She is right at 2. When I add chickens next year, I'm getting a couple more dark egg layers. I love the contrast in the egg cartons. someone here had some extra Welsumer pullet chicks, and I should have said something then, but it got past me. I have 11 chickens in a 6x8 coop with a big run and yard ranging in a huge yard when I'm home, so I could probably add 2 without stressing out the coop. (just dreaming, I guess)

gotta go get to work on that plywood.

Does any one have any Marans or Ameracuana's or Easter eggers for sale I am looking to get a few chicks for my broody who has been trying to hatch eggs which keep getting broke due to the other girls fighting over that one nest they have 4 thanks to any one who might be able to help. Trying to get more color in my egg basket.

Michelle, I read that the Maremma's are more people aggressive than the Great Pyrenees are. I got GPs because they're not as a rule people aggressive & I didn't want that trait. I wanted an LGD that would protect my chickens & rabbits but not frighten my granddaughter or other people coming here since I do sell eggs.

We had a rather strange day yesterday, headed to Karen's to drop off her incubator & chicks & had car trouble. We had to drive all the way back home to leave the car here & just as we got home the radiator spewed water & antifreeze all over the place. We got in my car to go to Wichita & on the highway in front of us a truck blew a tire & the parts flew all over in front of us, scary.. At that point we were wondering if we should just turn around & go home, but we continued on. We were running so far behind that we never had the chance to catch up with Chooks to meet her, as it turned out she got sick & went home without finishing her work, another weird thing. It was after 11 pm when we got home from finally getting all the shopping done to be greeted by some very hungry dogs & a bunch of hungry cats. I hope today is better.

Well my granddaughter is coming today, better run, I hope you all have a good day & stay cool! Gosh IVY, I wish I had the money I would buy that hatcher in a heartbeat, but I don't right now. Schellie, I just sold the rest of my Ameraucana chicks, I may have one out in the grow-out pen to sell, but that's it I quit hatching for this year. There are people on the KS Poultry swap on FB that have Marans chicks for sale if you look there.

Yes, I have read that the marremas are more people aggressive, too. Also, I think that hair would be a nightmare to take care of.

Well my little turkey that hatched under the broody hen died. I think the poor thing just stressed himself to death from being by himself. They didn't hatch any more poults, and the hens have been off the nest. I was kind of hoping to raise this one as kind of a pet. The RP's are so neat. All 5 of mine come running to the yard when they see me out walking the little dogs. I don't handle them but they walk around with me like they are expecting a handout or something, and they gobble at the slightest noise. What a hoot they are.

I'm still packing up "stuff" but just sat down to get off my feet for a bit. I need to take it a little easy on my feet because I have to work tonight and I will be on my feet all night. I've got a venison roast in the oven with onions, carrots and potatoes. Yum. It will be done for lunch. I'd rather cook something like that in the morning before it gets too hot out, then get the oven shut back off. Sometimes working nights we eat at really weird times. Usually I have a snack when I get home from work in the morning, or a bowl or cereal or something, lunch/dinner in the middle of the afternoon, and then a sandwich or something for a meal at night between 2-3am. When DH and I go out to eat, often it is in the middle of the afternoon and we are sometimes the only people in the restaurant. At least we don't have to wait for a table.

Hello all from Reno County, Kansas! Just poking around, still getting the hang of the site. I have 3 chickens that I thought would be 2 females and a male, but Im thinking I have 2 males, One female! :( May be needing to trade a boy for another girl if anyone is interested. I know I have to post that in the buy-sell-trade section but I need 20 posts first :)
Wow it is so good to have all of these new people join us lately. If you can post pics of your birds, we might be able to help you out with gender if you still aren't completely sure.

Long day! It started by going to bed at 0530 this morning after brewing 24 gallons of beer. Then, I slept in and went to dinner with family and friends for my birthday. I ended the evening by seeing DD in the King and I. I call that a good day!
Yay - another home brewer. I don't do anything like those quantities though. I just do 5-6 gallons at a time and even then it takes us quite awhile to go through that much beer. I love a nice cold one on a hot summer day but during the cooler months I don't tend to go through much of it at all. That is one of the things on my to-do list for this week: to start another batch. We are down to our last case of the last batch so its a good time to get going with it.

More dog questions - I've been doing my web browsing and looking/reading/etc. Here are some more questions:

Side Notes - My to do list today...... scrape propane tank, paint propane tank, finish chick coop's fencing under bottom, caulk/paint chick coop, start fence run, grocery shop, laundry.. what does your To Do list look like today???
LOL - my to-do list is pages long and it always feels good to scratch off a big item. But for today....let's see...I got up and spent a couple of hours mowing. It didn't get it all done but knocked out a good chunk of it. Then DH and I did some work organizing our workshop, took care of the animals, and then moved some furniture around as we are still moving in and unpacking. I took a break to cool down and check on BYC (several pages of new posts on this thread alone!) while DH makes us both a salad and then it will be back to work. I'm actually not sure what the afternoon will bring but I'm sure it will involve sweating.

We are home and my chicken sitter kept my birds all alive :). Our silkie stopped laying while we were gone though :-( I guess it was the heat? It wouldn't be a big stressor to simply have someone different taking care of them would it?
I tried to read from the train ( took a family train ride to Chicago for a Shriner's appt for my daughter), but darn if my eyes could adjust to the bouncing :-( so much to do now that we are home, I am not sure I will ever get caught up. My daughter is needing 4 surgeries this fall, so it sounds like we will be pros at getting things ready to leave and unpacking again. Right now, I am exhausted from it all though.
I did see there was another fox attack, however:-(. I have seen them in my neighborhood many evenings this year, more so than previously. Might just be coincidence, but are there more of them this year?
Glad to see you back but sorry your DD has to go through so many surgeries. What a trooper she is! I've been wondering the same, if there are more foxes this year or if I'm just more tuned to hearing about them as a result of our attack.

Oh no - that isn't the new car that had problems is it? I'm sorry to hear Chooks got sick. I was gone a couple days this weekend and it was kind of ironic that I was near Lawrence but knew she was here so there was no chance of hooking up with her. Enjoy your weekend with your granddaughter.

Sorry to hear about the poult

Yes, do take it easy with all the auctions, packing, moving and other stuff you will be doing. Its not that long you had your surgery and you wouldn't want to undo the repairs!

I can't remember who asked a few posts back. The reason for not getting ringneck pheasants is that you need to have the papers of origination proving it came from a breeder and not from the wild, and a game bird breeding license if you intend to breed it. Second it is native, therefor a found pheasant could have a whole plethora of diseases from the wild. It's just a matter of legality and common sense.
The chicken caviar sounds like it would be very healthy? I'm sure it is too rich $$ for me though.
I got my Dad taken to church and fed him dinner. Now I'm home and have to come up for something for my grand daughter. I didn't sleep at all last night. I have no idea why I was so wide awake. Now I feel lazy and groggy. It's ridiculous hot out there already. It felt pretty good about 7:00 AM but it sure didn't take long to get way too warm out. I had to go out first thing and check on the baby turkeys. It's like the equivalent to leaving a kid in a hot car in my mind. I worry about those guys constantly.

Thanks Trish - I posted on CL in the farm section looking for a LGD and got the following reply: "I have 3 female LGD puppies, they are too young to go to new homes right now, but will be ready in a few weeks. Their mother is purebred Great Pyrenees and their dad is Pyrenees/Anatolian/Wolfhound. If you are interested I can get pictures. When puppies are ready I will be asking $125."

Thoughts on this? Good mix of breed? Good price? (I'm wanting a female for sure)
