I am back in North Central Kansas spending the week with my parents. I'm back here for "my" rodeo - the North Central Kansas Saddle Club rodeo, held in Concordia, KS. This year, I'm helping carry sponsor flags between event (I'm the 2006 queen for this rodeo). Last night, it POURED in town, just about the time that everyone was getting there and getting ready. My mom who was using my horse for the grand entry had already saddled the horse and was using an umbrella to try to keep the horse dry. My horse has always been hard to load into the trailer, but I tried anyway, in an attempt to keep the horse and the saddle dry. My horse didn't cooperate and didn't go in the trailer (she's scared of the wet ramp after a previous fall because of the wet/slippery ramp on the trailer). However, this attempt DID cause me to get SOAKED and I stayed that way for the rest of the night. I ended getting kinda cold and so I put an extra long sleeve shirt on over the one I was wearing and managed to at least stay warm for the rest of the night. It's amazing how cold upper 80's/lower 90's feels when you're soaking wet and are used to ~110 degree weather. My parents ended up getting 1.5" of rain. Meanwhile, back at my house in northwest kansas, we didn't get a thing! I guess I can't complain too much. We're forecasted to be in the 90's for the next several days, which is cool compared to what we've been dealing with!

We got .5" of rain last night! Woohoo! The girls are in heaven today, no panting.

Last night my little buddy (DS) and I went to Orschlen's in Lawrence for feed. While there I grabbed a bag of scratch grains. DS and I had fun feeding the girls their "treat" last night. Karen, the SSX girls (Sumac and Saffron) were the only two to eat out of our hands. I had a heck of a time telling DS that chickens don't have teeth. I still don't think he believes me. He kept saying they are trying to eat my hand! Funny boy.

Ok, back to the grind.

I only have a few minutes to chat. Our household goods came yesterday so im trying to unpack and fix up house. My Dh is trying to help as much as he can but he started his chemo treatments here in kansas yesterday so he doesn't have much energy. We got some much needed rain last night but could use so much more.

Has anyone tried making your own feed for your chickens i came across this blog and am interested in making it but the

Heather, it's okay, don't give your farrier a hard time. It's all worked out and I'm back into my Zen mode again. LOL!! This new farrier came out and I LOVE HIM!!! I've been thru a lot of farriers and I don't often like them at all. But this guy was younger, and was clean cut, was very gentle, knew what he was talking about (I was worried he wouldn't know how to cut her) and complimented me on how great my 39 yr old horse looked. Didn't hurt that he was buttering me up. He took a TON of toe off of her and reangled her and she is breaking over!!!!!! Can I shout out Praise the Lord!!!!!? hehe!! So I told him, if he didn't mind, I was going to keep using him and rotate him in to my crazy schedule-- my old mare is every 6 weeks and my others are all at every 8 weeks. So I told him he'd be doing one or the others, and that I'd keep my farrier, but he could possibly wind up with all 3 of them if my farrier keeps flaking out on me. He said he was totally cool with that. So anyway, the world is all roses and and rainbows again! LOL!!

Well we got some sprinkles during the night but not even enough to wet the ground. It did make the chickens happier. They are all out hunting this morning in what used to be the grass. I could see lightening last night and it cooled it down for a while which was really nice. The rain of course would have been a better blessing.

I had a fairly good evening last night. I sold 64 guineas and one Mille Fleur D'uccle rooster to a guy who drove all the way from Abilene. Half of the guineas are going to Wyoming to his father in Law's farm. It will lightened up my feed consumption a little and I certainly can use the money. I also have an order for 5 roosters and 1 duck but I couldn't find the ones I was looking for last night. They are the hen hatched roos and I don't know where they sleep. I will try again tonight. I'm going to call my duck buyer and see if they want to come buy all the ducklings I have left. It isn't a good profit but I need to reduce reduce reduce.
Since I got some excess out of the brooder I think I am going to try to do some major cleaning in there and move my turkey babies out there. It worries me a lot to tkae them out of the house. but they are too crowded and too messy to be stuck in here any longer. If they do okay maybe I'll be able to move them outside to the pen in a few weeks with the others.
If I loose any I will never forgive myself.
Monday I have another 8 guineas going and 10 pullets. Again not profitable but it will reduce feed intake.

Josie do you think it is wrong to just pretend the ducklings went to your place if my granddaughter asks. I just don't want to upset her.

Danz, I took a minute to seriously say that prayer. I'm praying every single day for rain. I'm so glad that your sales are now finally working out and taking off. What a relief that must feel for you. I hope your turkeys do okay outside.

That's great you have all your stuff arrive. I'm really sorry about your DH having to run thru chemo treatments. A friend of mine finished his up last week. He had 10 rounds down in Texas at the cancer hospital down there. Hopefully your DH will kick butt and be back at it and feeling good when it's all over.

Yeah, tarps would've been good, but we didn't even consider that it'd actually RAIN ON US until it was too late to do anything about it. We did toss a couple of jackets over the saddle to try to keep it dry, but they wouldn't stay when I was trying to load the horse into the trailer so they had to go. After tonight's rodeo, we'll probably just make sure to clean the saddle up real good, apply some neatsfoot oil to it, and then just keep an eye on it to make sure there aren't any lasting effects from getting drenched! The good news is that the rodeo was relatively pleasant (cooler) and dust-free after the rain passed. Hopefully, it'll be similar tonight.

Tonight I looked up to see a sight that made me wish I had my camera with me. Scramble, my oldest hen, is a Buff Orpington and was named by my kids when she was a chick. A duck was grooming her beak and neck area and she was standing completely motionless, allowing it. A guinea stopped by to see what they were doing and noticed an area the duck had missed, so reached out and started grooming as well. It was so neat to see these three species - a chicken, a duck and a guinea, united by the common goal of grooming/being groomed.

That sounds absolutely adorable!!! I've seen one of my ducks doing this to a chicken, but she was squatting, so I assumed it was a mating thing.. LOL. I would have love to have seen that!

We got about the same amount - AND lost power AGAIN! I used to live in a mobile home and of all those 12 years, only lost power a few times - this new place, we've lost power at least a dozen since october. DH is about ready to write a letter to the electric company and the city - he's fed up with it! Glad to hear that Orschlen's in lawrence has scratch again! It didn't the past few weeks. I'm going to have to grab some tomorrow. You better not have taken the last bag.. LOL

This is awesome!! I've never had horses, so I had to look up the "breaking over", but after reading about it - I see why you are so excited! I'm assuming that it's been a while since she's been trimmed correctly?


OKay, so I'm sure ya'll are tired of hearing about me and my eggs.. LOL, but I GOT A DUCK EGG TODAY!!

I went out after work to do my normal feeding, watering, cleaning routine - noticed two eggs in the nest box, but left them there until i was finished (i'm in the process of making an apron to wear so I can collect eggs and veges without using my shorts pockets - today I didn't have any pockets). And as I was dumping and refilling the duck pool, DH told me to check out Ducky (my Pekin). She was coming out of the chicken coop. I laughed and mentioned to him that I'd seen her in there before and I was surprised she was using the ramp. We chatted about it and I finished up what I was doing. Went to collect the eggs and there were THREE in the nest box! (actually only two, because she'd kicked on of the others out, but I know it had been in there before and looked nothing like this new one!)
