Consolidated Kansas

I have runs built inside for each breed so they wouldn't be in the area I would install the fan. I just hate to cut a big hole in the wall and then not have a way to cover it for winter. Plus I am not sure how I can going to get the positive negative flow through the trailer if I do install a fan. I would prefer it exhausts out to draw air through the building rather than blowing on the birds. The reason being is that air blown from a fan further dries the air. If I am drawing fresh air through the building it would be healthier. I have one of those vents on my greenhouse that open only if the fan turns on. Of course it is useless right now cause I don't have electricity to it!

Hawkeye I just did a search and Valley Vet has denagard so I could get it in one day. Of course the shipping costs some but it still would arrive fast. I will definitely keep that in mind if I have any more colds develop. I found my tylan at Orshlen's. I bought the injectible because I don't like the idea of treating all the birds if I only have one or two ill.I understand you can give it orally as well but you have to have powder to mix it in water. It was only about $11 for the bottle which I really liked.

Happy Day to all! Had to share some great news! My youngest just took two cockerels to the Douglas County Fair after days of primping, bathing, combing! Good news - both the blue orp cockerel and the iowa blue cockerel took blue ribbons. Very excited for my youngest as this is his first fair!

Just needed to brag a bit on him!

Unfortany this was the 2nd time someone had messed with the pin and the dogs were out so that is why the ticket I have done a bunch to keep the husky from running off she is to smart for her own good the thing is I have a 6 foot privacy fence so no way to use the bike chain. I just can't figure out how or why the pin was out. We have not been using the gate for the last week since it has been so hot. I just saw the pin in the gate yesterday afternoon at 3pm so it must have happened last night. This is just so upsetting because there goes me getting my chicks that I wanted Ameracuanas maran and green egg layers. Wanted to add color to egg basket plus I have some older layers who will be going to freezer come fall. So just all around not a great day plus found mold in the basement so now have to Sorry for the rant just not been a good year so far.

My parents arrive next weekend. Poor things. They will be leaving temps in the 40's for triple digits and there's nothing they can do to acclimatize in between times.

Bummer for them! Where are they coming from that it is in the 40's??!!?? My mom came from Maine last week and she kept telling me she was fine but by the last day she was here she was disgusted that she couldn't go outside and help me work! I kept telling her she was gonna get sick then I did instead!
Josie, that's an awesome pen, so jealous! I'm the same way HEChicken, we have an old old truck, but don't like to take it very far any more, but we don't have a trailer. We would have to borrow one if we needed one & that's always kind of a hassle. Usually the things I see on CL are way on the other side of Wichita or out in Goddard, somewhere farther away. Then you have to weigh whether it's worth all the gas that the old truck takes to get somewhere & back & the risk just of driving it there. It I saw something really truly worth it though I probably would go for it.
Thanks! You know our trailer is really small and hardly anything fits on it and the jeep isn't even really supposed to be towing something that big but I do it anyway....I see a lot of things and have to weigh whether its worth the drive but this cage was totally worth it! It is very well made and what I paid for it probably didn't even cover the cost of all the hardware cloth they used to make it!
Love the pen, Josie! Very nice. I could use about 10 of those. My peachick is still in the house. Did you get 4 peachicks? I am trying to count in the picture.
I have a baby lemon cuckoo who is gasping a little and sneezing. How can you catch a cold when you are inside in a bin that has been disinfected and you are with the chicks you were hatched with. My peachick is in the same bin. I gave the chick a little vet RX and put probitiotics in their water. I have some tylan injectable but no powder and I don't feel I could inject a chick that young without over dozing. Anyone have any ideas? I don't want to loose any birds.
Thanks! I think I could use about 10 of them too but one was good for now! I do have 4 peas. He had five chicks in cameo and I kind of regret not taking all of them because the one sitting on the wire is significantly younger than the rest and it was just take out of a brooder with another chick its age and I think they must have been bonded to each other. It really hasn't bonded to the others as much as the top three are. I wish I knew if they were boys or girls, he said something about barring fading but I don't even see barring??

Did you maybe wash the bin is something that has an odor or fragrance? I washed a cage out with a cleaner, I can't remember what it was but it was "all natural" but had a strong odor and killed a chick that went into respiratory distress I assume from the odor of the cleaner.
You are right that Tory is smart although she did have occasion to make DH question her intelligence. I was outside and he was in the house when we heard her start barking like crazy. We ran from different directions to see what was up. There she was at the corner of the house, barking like mad. Every few seconds, she'd run around the corner, stop and bark some more. I doubled over laughing when I realized....she had caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window (there is one on each side of the corner) and was convinced there was a great big white dog in the house that didn't belong. DH just sighed in disgust and said "I thought you said this dog was smart".

Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!
lau.gif
Silly dog!!! Lucie barks at anything that is new or different, I think it takes them a bit to outgrow that bark at everything behavior. I hung a blanket over the fence and the pup was barking ferociously at it the other night because it was blowing up gently in the breeze. Molly comes running to assist, looks around and rolls her eyes (yes, this dog really does roll her eyes!!) and walks off. I could hear her grumbling "Bark happy foolish kid, calling me to help over a darn blanket blowing on the fence!"

It's official, I've gone mad as a hatter.

All the birds in the craftroom were just done last night. I have one Wellie that may not make it in spite of my best efforts. The Ameraucanas were all wilted like daisies and the poor lavs were just barely hanging in there. We tried everything and it just wasn't working. A couple Wellies had stopped eating and drinking and were just limp. That's when I lost it. The kids and I loaded them all up in carriers and took them to my bedroom to cool off in the A/C. I thought, well this is going to go over well but maybe DH can stand it for one night. As soon as he came home from work I told him what to expect and he just took it like a man. Later, when we were putting the birds up for the night, I discovered a New Hamp that was honking so I scooped her up and took her in the house not knowing where I was going to put her. Then it came to me! The bathtub of course with its enclosure was perfect. I laid out old towels and put her in there with feed and water and then I went to watch the Olympics. DH was working on our thermostats, which have been cooling the house to 69 degrees (can't wait to see that electric bill). When he was finished (all fixed) he sat down and I casually said "Honey, there's a chicken in our bathtub" he was very quiet and then said "Did the heat get to it"? I said "yes, I'm afraid it was going to die" "Okay" he said. I thought to myself that this truly was the man of my dreams!!! He went up to bed before I and when I got there he calmly said "Could you find someplace else for the birds tomorrow? My allergies are going crazy, so I took an Allegra, but this isn't going to work". I said very meekly "I'm so sorry. I'll figure out something else". Yikes, poor guy! What a sweetheart, though! Anyway, most of the birds are ready to go back out, but I'm going to have to really work with them today to keep them going. A couple of them will have to stay in but that won't be as difficult to manage. I think the heat has gotten to me. What was I thinking to stack my bedroom full of chickens?
th.gif
I've got to figure something out for these birds. I just cannot bring them all in the house but I can't stand to see them suffer, either.

Karen, I am sorry you are so stressed but what a loving and kind DH you have!! Maybe you could set a fan with a mister outside to cool the air near them? I have a box fan running and a mister a few feet behind it misting so by the time it reaches the fan it is just cooler air. I am going to make some "swamp tents" that I read about on here too and I will let you know how it goes. It is just a burlap tent thing and you soak it with water and the evaporation of the water cools the air. Apparently people who live in the jungle use them at night to sleep in the terrible heat. You could try shallow bowls of water for your chicks to stand in, my babies that are in the garage love their little ceramic bowls of water, they are all hanging out in them when I go out.

wow--- LOVE this!!!! I want one!! LOL! (the pen, not the birds)
Hahahahaha! No peas for you, huh?

The Denagard I bought is just put in the water and I used it for 5 days and it pretty much cleared up all the sneezing and crackly lungs. I had my chicks drinking the water. It says it is self adjusting for weight because a small chick won't drink as much as a larger bird. So anyway, going on that theory, I hoped the chicks wouldn't overdose themselves. I can't say it's cheap though. That part is a bummer. But I think it's going to last forever, because you only use 15mm in a gallon of water. I measured it out with a small shot glass that has mm listed on the side of it. The bottle is pretty big.
I need to get some of this, where did you order it from?
Karen, you crack me up! You and I are so much alike. I have bins and cages all over my house because I can't just let something suffer. They get moved but they always come back. Your husband is a keeper for sure.
The little lemon cuckoo died during the night and now I am really worried. I just changed bins and bedding yesterday evening. It seems like it would have surely had a problem before that. I am just totally confused where a cold might have come from. I guess I'll keep pouring on the probiotics and try to watch every one really close. Maybe I'm not supposed to raise these pretty birds after all. I sure seem to have lousy luck with them. I am starting to wonder about feed now. I wonder if it is possible that some viruses can come from the chick starter. With all the other problems lately I guess it is possible. I am using Purina right now, but not one of the recalled lot numbers.
I'll check into the denagard. My apothecary keeps growing. Probably won't order it though unless I have another bird come down with a cold. I have duramycin, tylan, and baytril all here already. It's just that I keep encountering some new problem like in this case, a young chick that I don't know how to dose. I do like the idea of self adjusting on dosage. That is the biggest worry I had about Baytril. I was too worried I was over dosing with it.
Oh bummer! Sorry about your chick! Have you checked recalls on your feed lot? There are a lot of feeds being recalled due to high levels of aflatoxin (fungus) in the feed. I had a bad bag of starter from nutrena and I think that is why I lost all those brahma chicks several weeks ago and two silkie chicks and the polish from you. They seemed fine, then got bad pasty butt and felt bloated and then died shortly after that. DH says their livers probably failed.

I am thinking about ordering a bottle of Denagard, let me know if you would be interested in splitting it. I will never use a whole bottle before it expires but would like to have it on hand for sick birds. Seems like by the time you get something ordered and delivered they are dead. I think this would be nice to have on hand but hate to have this huge bottle sitting around that I won't need all of it for my crew.
Danz, funny but the birds are a lot quieter than our yappy little dogs! Those silly dogs loved having the chickens in the bedroom. Jorgie couldn't get to them but just licked the cages. He loves everybody and everything. Reggie kept trying to reach in to bop them on the head through the wire kennel, so I put it up on a cedar chest in my closet and that put a stop to that nonsense. What a menagerie! I had an old cockatiel sized bird cage that I put the little Serama in and she loved it. She loved that it had two roosts and immediately flew to the top one. So cute. She fits really great in there too. I thought to myself -- would it be totally weird to keep a chicken in a birdcage?
roll.png

I used to keep my seramas in the house, they get very tame if you keep them indoors in a cage. They are the number one house pet in Malaysia and are preferred over cats and dogs. Having a serama as a pet is a sign of affluence. They even have big competitions in the streets and parks to show off their prize seramas. They do very well in a cage and I have two frizzled girls that are so tame still from living indoors I can do anything with them.

You guys are so right -- I need A/C in the craftroom and hen house and I would already have it if it weren't back-to-school season. I've just dropped a cool $3,000 for clothes and supplies. Ouch! I desperately want at least one A/C unit but we need to pay off the credit card before we go there. I already have a dehumidifier so I've closed up the craftroom this a.m. while it's still relatively cool and am running the dehumidifier. That should help maintain a lower temp than outside today. I think my mistake last night at the big birds pen was to stop running puddles after 6:00pm. It was still just too hot and I should have continued with the puddles.
If you end up buying a window AC you might want to bite the bullet and buy one at the store new. We bought a window ac used and it died six months after we bought it because they are not built to last anymore like everything else. It cost us $65 to dispose of it at the dump too!!!
My little Wellie that wasn't doing so well died while I was holding it and trying to get it to take a little water this morning. Broke my heart.
hit.gif
I really worked on that little bird but it was just too far gone. I am so sick of this heat. We've had clouds all morning and there was a nice rain north of us, but it fell apart right before it reached us. At least we still have some clouds -- I hope that holds all day and keeps these temps down. I can dream, can't I?
Bummer, I am so sorry. How tragic, at least she was loved and didn't die alone.

One of the Ameraucanas just isn't growing like the others. It seems active and healthy but it's just tiny and staying that way. I keep hoping it'll have a growth spurt.
I have a jersey giant chick like this, the rest are all tall and gooby looking and getting all their feathers and this chick still looks like its a week old? I wonder if chickens can carry a dwarfism gene like humans and just not grow?

Another swim party is set for this afternoon. At least the kids are well entertained at home. I just don't want to go anywhere while this heat is threatening my birds.
Have fun, I don't blame you. I don't like to leave for a long time during the heat of the day either.

Winter I get, but Fall is my favorite season! The temperatures are still warm enough not to need jackets but not too hot, and there generally isn't the wind that we get in the Spring. I look forward to Fall all year long.....
Yes, Fall!!!!! If it would just stay fall all winter I would LOVE that!

Well, my day started out great and then went downhill. Last night I put the two pet dogs in the chicken yard and also let Tory in to wander around and get a feel for it but then pulled her out before closing it up for the night. I started to walk up to the house, realized Tory wasn't with me, and turned around to see her standing at the gate next to the other two dogs. This morning when I went out she was in the same position! I'm sure she didn't stay there all night long but I was glad that she was hanging around with them rather than off roaming the neighborhood.

So, feeling rather chipper I went to make coffee. DS came out to sit on the porch with me to drink coffee and we saw Cyrus running down the yard, with the guineas right behind him. I thought nothing of it - until I watched him run back the other way with the guineas still behind him and realized they were chasing him. DS and I went to the chicken yard and for 30 minutes had to stand between Cyrus and the guineas to keep them away. The poor thing was getting exhausted from being chased and when they caught him, sometimes they would grab his wing and hang on so he'd be dragging them while he tried to run. He is such a gentle soul that he runs instead of turning around and flogging them. I'm so disappointed in the guineas because they were raised with the flock and up until this morning I have not seen a single instance of them bullying the chickens, even though I had read that guineas sometimes will. The weird thing is they have singled out Cyrus and stalked him all morning long. The rest of the chickens mingle around with the guineas without an issue but whenever they spot Cyrus, the chase is back on. I worried about him getting heat stroke from all that running as the day gets warmer, so when the guineas went into the coop to get something to eat, I shut the door to give him some peace. It will be hotter for them in there but I've checked on them a few times and they seem fine. I gave them water and food. The only problem is, now the hens can't get in to lay their eggs. I'm hoping when the day is a little warmer I can let them back out and they will have lost interest in chasing during the hot part of the day.

But, (and I hope this doesn't upset anyone to hear), I value Cyrus more than I value those guineas. I never minded, or even really noticed the noise but DH has commented a few times on how loud they can be and said he wouldn't care if I got more chickens but could happily live without the guineas. So, given their obsession with eliminating Cyrus, I've decided it is time we found out what guinea tastes like. I've already processed one but couldn't catch the others. I'm debating whether to go to Walmart and try to get a fishing net so I can catch the rest, or just wait until after dark when they are on the roost. The problem with that is that it leaves me processing in the dark which doesn't appeal a great deal. Karen, I need some of your chicken wranglers! I asked DS if he fancied himself a guinea wrangler but he said he didn't think he'd be very good at catching them.
Oh no! I have heard guineas will get really territorial sometimes. I plan to house mine with the turkeys once their pen is built and free range them together. So far mine have been very subdued and often avoid the chickens but I only have four of them so maybe that makes a difference? Have you thought about selling them? I know a lot of people are looking for guineas.

I bought a little fishing net at wally world last week because chicks kept getting out and I couldn't catch them to save my life and it is awesome! I told DH it was $5 well spent plus I can catch them a lot faster and save us all the stress of running around in the heat! I am not as agile as I once was, its funny because I am close to 30 but at some point you just can lunge after things like you used to! I told DH we better get after having kids or I won't be able to catch them if I wait too long!!!

Oh boy, I just caught up on reading posts, it looks like it hasn't been good for anybody the last couple days. I thought yesterday was just miserable. I spent some time after I got home from our eye appts. cooling everybody down, I was really worried when we came out of the Dr's office in Wellington & it was just like walking out into an oven literally. I was praying all the way back home that all of my birds were OK. They were of course hot & were panting a lot, but none were in acute distress thank goodness.

Karen, you aren't the only one that has had chickens in the house. I can't say I have put them in the bedroom, my DH would never go for that, but I have had them in the sun room & still have a crate of chicks in the utility room. Those little Swedish Flower Hen chicks are going to outgrow their crate soon, I guess I'm going to have to split them into two crates probably, but I hate having to have the mess in two of them. They're really needing to go outside, but gosh I hate to take them out when it's 110 outside, they'll die for sure. The utility room is not air conditioned or heated, it used to be a breezeway between the house & garage, but when they built the detached garage then the breezeway became a utility room & the old garage just a spare room. You can't tell it was a garage now, we did away with the old door & that area is covered with siding now too like the rest of the house. It makes a perfect storage room & unfortunately it is full. Anyway, it's too bad you couldn't find a free air conditioner somewhere for your craft room. Maybe you can watch Craigslist & see if one shows up there, I have seen them there before. Even if it only worked for a short time, just long enough to get you through the hottest part of the summer it would be worth it.

Schellie, I definitely would set some type of trap so if someone is messing with your gate you could tell for sure & like Hawkeye said take a pic with your phone & then you have proof that it was tampered with.

Josie, that's the only way I can catch chickens is with a net unless they're on the roost sleeping. I have a couple of different fishing nets, but the finest one is the best. Don't get one with too big of holes or you will have problems with it catching on things too much. The one I have originally I used for my fish pond, but I don't even know if there are any fish left in there any more. It almost went dry this year & I just put some water back in. Anyway, this one has a telescoping handle because I needed one to reach further, but it was more expensive too. It comes in handy now for the chicken catching.

HEChicken, I wonder if you have a bunch of male guineas that see this rooster as a challenge to them & that's why they are OK with the hens but not him? It's just a thought. I know that guineas can be ornery to chickens though. When I bought my first ones from a hatchery I had the little keets in a brooder with some chicks I had gotten & I ended up having to take the guineas out & put them elsewhere because they were picking on my baby chicks. I would put them up on Craigslist if I were you instead of just eating them all. You could get some money out of them & people are always looking for guineas for tick control. I'm getting 10 new guinea keets Thurs. morning, I hope I'm not sorry I'm getting them again, but I just need something to try to get these darned ticks under control, they're driving us mad. I can't even go out to feed & water without coming in with some on me. I have been bitten multiple times this year already & even my DH, who bugs don't bother as much as me has had some bites too. We have to spray down our granddaughter when she comes with repellant & hope she doesn't get bitten because her mother will have a fit.

Myabcs3, congrats on the win!

I spent about an hour out there this morning just watering all the birds & making sure they're all comfortable until the next check. It was cloudy when I was out there, so that helped, but it was starting to get steamy when I came in. I've got my pen all ready for the new guinea keets & put some boards up for shade for them, so maybe that will help some. I need to figure out another pen for the peafowl when they get too big for the one they're in, but it's just too darned hot to think about going out there to put up a pen right now. I want to free-range them when they get big enough, but that will be awhile. I walked out to look at progress on the front wall of the new coop this morning & it looks like all that is left is framing in the last window & then that will be ready to sit aside. Then we have to go buy more wood for more walls & more screws.

Are any of you with GPs having problems with them not eating well right now in this heat? Mine just aren't wanting to eat much & have lost weight. I try to feed them the same, but they just aren't that interested right now in it, it's just too hot. I tried feeding them later last night after dark & it was much later even before they went back out & ate it. The cats seem to like their food & I'm having trouble with them eating their food when the dogs don't eat it too even though I feed the cats & sit there while they eat so the dogs don't get it first. The dogs like the cat food & the cats like the dog food. I feed the dogs first usually then while they're checking out their food I go & feed the cats & sit there so the dogs don't run up & take it. Then when the cats are done, whatever is left I let the dogs have. Then the cats run down while the dogs are busy eating the leftovers & eat what is left in their bowls, it's crazy. I have to have the chickens all put up first too before I can feed the cats or they will just run over & eat it all.

Josie yes I would split a bottle of denagard with you. Valley Vet has it for $39. They are in Bucyrus, Ks. I think that would be pretty darned close to you, wouldn't it? Shipping is around $10 if it is shipped. Anything I've ever ordered from them came the next day. If I had the time I'd love to go over there and just walk around the place. They seem to have everything. I doubt I would ever use a full bottle but it would be nice to have on hand for sure.
HEchicken you mentioned you thought a lot of your guineas were male. A male guinea will sometimes feel a male rooster is opposition. I have a couple around her that will run at one of my roosters but the roosters are so used to them they just ignore them, so the guinea backs off. There is no other reason for them to chase your roo other than that. Just sell some of your boys and I imagine the problem will be solved. Guessing how big they should be by now they should bring $6 to $10 each. I would keep your girls if you can single them out if I were you and maybe one male.

I checked the bag of feed the day I got it and that lot number wasn't listed. I had cleaned out the tub with Oxine then rinsed it well with clear water. It should have been free of any fragrance or bacteria. That stuff is amazing. I guess I could clean up the tub they were in until yesterday and start over but I would think there would be nothing that would make them sick. I had them on paper towels until yesterday when I put them on shavings. I changed the paper towels every day or two. I've been ultra careful because I have a ton of money invested in this particular bin of chicks.

Josie, my parents are coming from Melbourne, Australia, where it is winter so it will be a big shock to their system. They usually come either in May or September/October when the differences aren't so great. Looking at the 7-day forecast it is triple digits for all 7 of them. Sigh.

That is funny about Lucie barking at the blanket. I can just see it! This morning one of the chickens peered into the hedgerow and then started singing the egg song like they did that day when they saw the fox. The dogs weren't showing any interest but I asked Tory to go check it out for me anyway. She, Sammie, and I all walked back there and as we approached I heard a crash in the hedgerow so I think there was definitely something there but neither of the dogs showed the slightest interest. We walked back and forth and Tory was looking kind of puzzled, like "why are we walking up the hedgerow". Later on another chicken started singing the egg song at the exact same place. Weird.

Maybe I should try CL for the remaining dozen guineas. I did think of that earlier but the difficulty catching them is what put me off. I can just imagine having someone here watching me diving around in the coop trying to grab guineas LOL. I guess I could tell them they need to come around 9pm when at least they are already in the coop. Of course at that time its a little crowded because so are all the chickens and ducks.

I've let them out of the coop now that its warming up and so far they are leaving Cyrus alone.

Trish, none of my dogs has lost appetite lately but I have dropped down to one feeding. I used to feed morning and night but they stopped wanting to eat in the morning. I'd put it out, they'd take a mouthful or two (or sometimes none) and then wander away and never come back to it. So finally I dropped the morning feeding and give them extra in the evening. What I usually do is let them eat their fill - if they empty the bowl, I put more in until they're done. Then that is it until the next feeding. It seems to be working out okay. Tory and Tequila are a great weight. Sammie will always be too skinny and look like we are starving her but although she is the lightest weight, at 37lb, she eats almost as much each day as Tory does. She is such a high energy dog she burns it all off I guess. Tory does seem to have the runs though and I'm not sure what is causing that since we haven't changed feed, its a high quality feed, she has constant access to fresh water and doesn't seem to be feeling poorly. For now I'm just going to keep an eye on her. I know that getting her in the car to take her to a vet would be a challenge.

Well, I kind of figured it would be a 50/50 split. The only ones I really know for sure are 2 female and 2 male, based on their calls. However in spending time looking at them this morning, more than I ever have before, I'm seeing some visual differences. On the guinea forum whenever someone asks how to tell the gender on their guineas, the answer is always the buckwheat but....

The two that I know buckwheat have small, dull colored wattles. The two I know to be male have large, much more brightly colored wattles. So with that difference in mind I looked around at the rest of the flock and I see a couple of others that look like the females, that I've never heard buckwheat (including a lavender). And I see quite a few with the large, brightly colored wattles, so yes, I started wondering if it wasn't the testosterone that was the trouble. The one I processed this morning is one that I suspect to be a male based on size and the colored wattles.

I did wonder if getting rid of a few of the males would solve the problem. Perhaps I will try running an ad on CL and see if I get any responses. If not, there is still the option of eating them.

Yesterday I let the pekins out and got tickled at how much they were enjoying me spraying them with the water hose. Here are some pics DH took. Then a crowd gathered and everyone wanted sprayed.Click to enlarge.

Danz i love your ducks i hope to one day have some. I had two when i was younger and they are so fun to watch I had to rehome them when i moved to Hawaii. Do you keep your in a pen at night and let them roam during the day?

Hawkeye - More hops does equal more beer! In fact I have two strains of yeast I harvested from my last batch that i will use to make new batches of beer with. The oast I built will help get them dried quicker and now I won't have window screens all over the garage with fans on them. That will make DW mucho happy.

Danz- Well thank you for the gift! I have been spreading the word about your hatchery -- yes I said it -- hatchery. I said that you turn out really healthy birds. I will keep spreading the word.

Oh here is a pic of the little ones in their new outside home:

The older girls have been very curious about these new little noise makers.
