Consolidated Kansas

Ha, Ha, you two yeah right!! Now if you all believe that I have a bridge I'll sell you.
I was giggling about it as I went to bed, and then thought-- I wonder if I should be saying that? Then thought-- eh, long gone, and too funny NOT to! LOL!

Oh you girls! Stinkers, both of you!!!

I had a cochin pullet that used to roost up high in the branches above the coop at night and I could never find her but she always jumped back down in the morning. The first night she did it I thought for sure she was gone and I was so upset and then there she was in the morning!

Alright! Promised eye candy for Danz!

And a proud serama broody with her clutch of jelly bean babies! Don't stick your fingers in there! She is vicious.

DH came out the bathroom the other night all upset because he wanted to pet one of the babies and the hen nailed him! I think it just bruised his pride but it sure was funny!

Josie, all of them are gorgeous! What are the buff colored chickens? I LOVE their feather legs! Obviously they are in the featherleg class... That serama hen is stunning! WOW!! Love the mottled color!!! Is she a mottled or splash or...?? Beautiful!!!

This is REALLY off-topic and doesn't even belong here - but, I have a dear friend whose son is being executed today - PLEASE pray for her to have some comfort and peace. I just don't even know how a mother can survive through something like this. My heart is so heavy for her today...

So, to keep this chicken related - I think my barred rock is a rooster.... "he" sure acts like it lately, but doesn't make the same noises as the other one that I know is a rooster. My gang will be 3 months old this weekend. I will try to get photos of all 5 up close and put them on here. Trish, when you come over today, we'll take another look at the barred.

Sunflower, what an awful thing for your friend to have to go through. I really feel for her - can't even imagine.

Barred rocks are easy to sex based on their coloring. Although both males and females are black/white striped, the males will appear to be white with black stripes while the females will look like they are black with white stripes, if that makes sense. If you can post pics of him, we might be able to help you narrow him/her down. Alternately, if you go up to the breeds database at the top and loop up BR's, I bet they will have pics so you can see the difference for yourself and use that to compare to your guy. I'm off to check that out for myself...

Okay, well I take it back - they don't have very good pictures, so I will post some pics of birds I had in the past so you can see the difference in the coloration. The disclaimer is that the roo is a Barred Rock mix, not full BR, but you can still see the difference in the coloration/barring:

Yep, HEchicken is right-- the barred rock males are reversed color than the females. Here are my girls. If yours is reversed in color, then you have a boy. :)

Danz, I don't seem to have the Gardner Swap on my lists on the FB swaps, how did we miss that? Can you give me the date & times & location for that swap so I can add it to our list? Is it on a Sunday? Unless I could talk my DH into going with me he would probably have heart failure if I drove that far for a peacock. So is it just an auction or is there a swap meet too?
The fall Gardner auction is Saturday Sept 15th at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner. Starts at 8:00 AM. I try to get there earlier so I can look around. It is strictly an auction. You should go just once for the experience. Everything comes caged so you would want to throw a blanket on your back seat or something just to be safe. It cost $5 to get in but to me it is worth $5 just to look at all the eye candy. They have the auction outside in the arena, then there is another auction inside for the caged birds and chicks. You can have anything from parakeets to $2000 parrots in there.
I should sell some of my diamond doves. They have started producing and my cage is super crowded. I bought a pair at Gardner originally.

Loved the Silkie video! So did my kids!
I am going to have to try the other versions of lentils. We love jalepenos.
Danz, if Hopper boy gets too lonely once his buddy has other responsibilities, could he be put with another d'uccle, even if they aren't the same color? I wanted to get a pullet his color when he turned out to be a crower, but never did. If I had I would happily share it. I do have a pretty Mille fleur he used to hang out with if that would help. She is getting ready to lay, or become noisier than he was, not sure... She makes the oddest cackles over and over. The D'uccles are my friendliest and most curious in my little flock. I have a porcelin too. She buddies with my EE and they are inseparable. So funny to watch!
I read a bit about those olandsk dwarfs. They sound very much like my d'uccles personality wise. Very neat little birds!! The buckeyes sound fun too! I would love to be assured the mice aren't eating my feed or near my house.....
I only have two other D'uccles right now and both are roos. They are both Mille Fleurs. Hopefully I'll be getting some more hatching eggs when it cools down.
DH happened to finally notice the buff laced polish yesterday and said, "That bird is awesome!" He thought it was beautiful. I told him if if is a girl it was going home with Sera, Aubri, and Andy. He said, I wouldn't mind having more of them. He is such a chicken enabler!!

Oh, her next surgery is the 10th of October, so she has a bit of recoup time. They will be moving teeth and fixing part of her eye then. The next one will prob be in Dec, and she will have her jaw wired shut over Christmas for it all to heal. Rotten luck, but she announced to her new teacher that she will still come to school, and is LUCKY because she can drink all the smoothies she wants then :)
That little girl could teach us all lessons in optimism. She is a precious jewel.

Danz, well I found out this evening that the peacocks are black shoulder split to pied. I wouldn't mind the black shoulder part, but not sure about the pied. I usually don't like pied birds that much. Anyway, she's supposed to get me some pics tomorrow so I can see what they look like.
Trish that means you have a couple of higher priced birds there. You could still breed them to an India Blue and get a number of different combinations.Part black shoulder, part india blue and part pied. I have white eyed split to pied and they are pretty. But there is something majestic about a plain old India Blue. Someone once said a pied looks like someone spilled bleach on their tail.
If I were going to make a hoop house I would just make a basic rectangular framework out of whatever lumber I was using. You can pull the panels to a half circle using a rope, fasten them to the framework, then release the rope. Just for security though I would put another 2x4 across the middle to help secure the frame. I saved an old swimming pool line I thought I would cover one end if I ever built one to form a house or shelter. Don't know if it will work or not but figured it was worth a try.

maybe she made a 10 mile round trip around the bend, across a highway and over a bridge to leave and then come back to you?

So since you tempted me does that mean you will sell me hatching eggs some day? Are these bantam or LF brahmas? I like my big birds best.
I had to remove my broody Serama hen. She was so over protective she wouldn't let her babies eat or drink. She flogged me more than once. Unfortunately I lost all her babies. There was only one left when I took her out and it didn't live through the night. Just too far gone. Stupid Chicken.

I hope I can house my Olansk with my Seramas eventually. Since I sold 50 adults I have a little more room. I am not even sure I am going to continue raising the Seramas eventually. I just don't have a good market for them here. I really need to start shipping although I hate to start all that.
My first Red Star X Brahma chick hatched yesterday. It was actually 5 days early so it apparently had been incubated some before I put it in. ( I found their eggs in the barn and culled out all that weren't good.) Nice pale red tinted blonde chick. I have high hopes for future layers from this group. My silly red cochin boy has been trying to take over those hens though so the current eggs wouldn't be so desirable. I won't try hatching any more after those I've already gathered. I don't want cochin mixed for layers.

It is finally raining (drizzle since 7 a.m.) for the first time since June. Is there anything sadder than a wet chicken? How about 2 wet chickens?

These girls (Lucy the Delaware and Scout the Golden Campine) are right at 2 years old. They are hanging out under the roof over a bit of the patio. The rest of the flock is in the coop grousing about the rain after getting thoroughly wet earlier.
