Actually a snake is the first thing that came into my mind without the laugh included. If there had been one in there trying to steal eggs it is very likely. That would be great actually. He would never be able to digest it.
That reminds me of some reading I was doing yesterday on trying to eliminate mice. One of the suggestions was to mix cocoa mix with plaster of paris and the mice would eat it and it would harden in them. I thought that sounded great If I could be sure the chickens couldn't get it. I'm at the point I will try about anything since they seem immune to the poison.
I went out to the brooder house first thing this morning and even with a heat lamp the young chicks were all huddled up. It felt pretty chilly out there.
Then I got pretty disturbed. I opened a brand new bag of Purina chick starter DH picked up for me when he was in Emporia last week. It had rained a little while he was up there and the starter was in the back of the truck. The whole thing was nothing but mold! Makes me sick at the price of feed these days. The last stuff I got from Orshlen's just fell apart and was pretty worthless. More waste than not. I'll have to buy some at Orshlen's tonight regardless cause there is no place else to buy it without traveling an hour and I am going to be up there any way.
That makes three bags of moldy feed I've had to toss lately. That sure is a waste of money.
So were the cattail roots a firm feel or were they soft like mashed potatoes? Got me curious, I imagine the young roots in the spring would be better eating for sure. I'm really curious.
