I know someone looking to rehome their 13 month old St. Bernard - not sure if male or female (sorry). I guess the dog is great around kids, is in an outdoor pen and is friendly. I do not know much. I'm not sure if this breed makes a good LGD? Anyways - I told them I'd pass the word - they are in Ark City. Let me know if you're interested or know someone who is. They are willing to give the dog away for free if the home is right.

If this was a puppy and not already a large dog, I'd jump on taking this pup. Seems a St. Bernard would be a good LGD:

this taken from dogbreedinfo.com "The Saint Bernard was founded in 980 AD by St Bernard de Menthon and bred by the monks most likely by crossing the ancient Tibetan mastiff with the Great Dane, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and the Great Pyren
ees. The first Saint Bernards were of the short haired variety, as the long-haired variety's coat tended to collect icicles. They were used by the Hospice, a refuge for travelers through the dangerous Alpine pass between Switzerland and Italy. In the middle of the seventeenth century Saint Bernards became popular as a rescue dog working to save people from avalanches in the snowy passes near the Hospice. The dogs are able to smell a person under many feet of snow. They have saved thousands of people searching out and finding lost or injured travelers. The dogs would work in packs looking for the victims. When found they would lick and lay down with them in order to keep them warm. While a dog or more would lay with the body(s) another dog would head back to the Hospice to alert them that they found the humans. A full rescue team would then be sent out. The Saint Bernard has also been known to be able to predict storms and avalanches. This may be possible because of the dog's ability to hear very low frequency sounds which humans cannot. The Saint Bernard was recognized by the AKC in 1885. Some of the Saint Bernard's talents are search and rescue, guard dog, watchdog and carting."

Josie, those are just some super nice brooders, he did such a great job on them, you will have room for raising all kinds of chicks next year. I have two separate brooders in my garage, but I'm really wondering if they will be enough when I start to really hatch a bunch of all of the breeds of chicks I plan to next year. I'm thinking maybe when I get some other projects done this fall that I should build another one. Now that I built one it shouldn't be that hard to do another. My biggest problem right now is needing to clean out the garage & just get rid of gobs of things out of there so I have more room. That is on my to do list to be done soon. There is so much stuff that has gotten shoved into that garage & it just needs to be hauled out of there again permanently.

I noticed this evening that my pullets that I got in April are starting to get more pink in the face & combs & they're really getting big, it will be nice when they all start to lay. My poor hens that had such awful bare backs from too many roosters around are now starting to grow feathers back on their backs since Big Red left. They have looked so bad for so long that it will be nice to have hens with feathers again. These two roos that I kept aren't nearly as rough with them as Big Red was thank goodness.
I know what you mean about having tons of stuff! We moved from a 2000 square foot house to just over 800 square feet and let me tell you, we have been getting rid of stuff as fast as we can. I can't believe how much junk we have that we haven't used since we bought it! Glad your girls are getting some feathers back. I like roos who are gentleman and don't over mate the girls to death. I have a friend who had a rir roo like that and she hated it so I asked her why she was keeping him and she told me she didn't know why! Next night they had him for bbq! She was so relieved to be rid of him and her hens were a lot happier too! Now all she has is a silkie roo running the whole flock! I kind of like my banty roos for running with the big girls because they are good watch dogs but don't beat the girls up. I don't need fertile eggs from my laying flock anyway but that doesn't stop those boys from trying!
Medawinks, they would seem too young to molt so I'm thinking perhaps they are pulling out feathers to line the nests in preparation for laying.

Josie, darnit, you dashed my hopes that my roo was being submissive by pecking the ground. Sounds like perhaps he is just awaiting an opportunity to jump me. Ah well, he doesn't have spurs yet so he can't do that much damage and when we spar I always come out the winner so hopefully once the hormones pass, he'll get over this. The funny thing is, DS walked in the chicken yard the other day (I forgot to warn the rest of the fandamily not to come at the moment) and Cyrus didn't bother him at all.
I was gone all evening. Had a great talk with Josie and got some Denaguard from her. More drugs for the chickens.
I also got another batch of Swedish Flower Hen eggs. I'm pretty happy about that. I should have a nice colorful group of breeders some day...God willing.
As far as you all go with your brooders, many of you have seen my brooder house. That thing is always full. Even when I stopped hatching I had birds in there. I've got this big group of Sussex eggs and red star X brahma eggs I've been hatching and it is filling up fast. Plus I have my peafowl, my lavenders,my lemon cuckoos, my Orlandsk, and my Swedish Flower hen chicks in bins in the house. There is never enough room. I'm seriously going to have to get to work on other pens to house all these new birds in soon.
I've got to get out and get busy on my peafowl pen again today. DH didn't get done with the work so I need to get some more barrier up in case these peachicks hatch in the next few days. The way I figured it it should be in the next 2-6 days. I wish he had listened to me and done it the way I asked him to. Oh well. I will just have to work from where he stopped. Here summer is nearly gone and none of the projects are finished as planned. Of course the extreme heat and drought really put things at a stand still.
My yard looks like it snowed. I think whether a chicken goes into a full blown molt or not they still tend to loose a lot of feathers when the seasons change. I've noticed the same thing the last couple of years.
I had a guy call while ago and I think he might end up taking a huge load of my pullets. He is supposed to call back and let me know when he is coming. That would be such a relief. He lost all his birds to predators and has a large amount of egg customers. I'd rather be a little low on eggs myself than have all these extra mouths to feed. And that means one step closer to getting down to just my breeders.
Glad you are lightening the load a bit! I don't know how you get all those birds rounded up!

I don't know that a St. Bernard would be a good LGD as they are bred as search and rescue dogs. I am sure he would be a wonderful pet for someone, they are very neat dogs. I did read that they share a common ancestry with Swiss Mountain dogs that used to be used by cattlemen as LGD which I thought was interesting.

Sunflowerparrot- I was just thinking if they get desperate and are not having luck on their own there is a fabulous large dog rescue in Wichita called Big Dogs Huge Paws that may take her in. I have met some of the folks that run it and it seems like a really nice organization. I know the Kansas Humane Society works with them a lot when they get giant breeds surrendered since they need certain types of homes to be successfully placed. Here is a link to their website: http://bigdogshugepaws.com/

Someone on here asked about the Kansas Humane Society's cremation services ages ago and it just occurred to me that I never answered them!!! Was it HEchicken?? Someone with an aging pointer that was owned by a family member.....Sorry about that!

x2. They are wonderful dogs but I have a friend who has one and while she loves him more than her own kids (I sometimes think), she has turned me off ever having one, at least as an indoor dog. Her dog drools so much and she describes how he'll shake his head and fling that stuff everywhere. She laughs as she tells it but I kind of shudder at the thought. He also sheds like crazy. She is such a neat freak, she spends hours a day cleaning her house all because of this dog. He is a real sweetheart though. Have you ever seen billboards for a Wichita nursing home that show a picture of an older lady sitting on a park bench with a St. Bernard at her feet looking up at her? Well, that is my friend's dog! She was so excited when he got that gig.

Another reason to have them as outdoor dogs, is that although her dog is only 4 years old, he is already having a terrible time with his hips because as a baby he slipped so many times on their tile or linoleum floors that he stretched the ligaments in his hips and now as a 4-year-old he already can't jump in and out of a car. If he had been kept outdoors all along, he might be in better shape now.

Nope, wasn't me, but I can attest to KHS's euthanasia services. When we had to put our dog to sleep a year ago, we took him there and they couldn't have been nicer or more understanding of the enormously painful decision it was. We knew it was his time but it was still hard. They laid blankets on the floor for him so he could be comfortable, and gave him a sedative so he would be relaxed and out of it when the time came. Afterward, they let us stay with him until we were composed enough to carry him out and leave (we buried him in his happy place, at our barn, where we will always be able to remember him).

Sunflowerparrot, I'm not too sure that a St. Bernard would be a good LGD. We had two that lived down the hill from us & they ran loose all the time. They ran with a couple other dogs too sometimes, but they came up here all the time chasing our cats & terrorizing them. One day they came up here & chewed up the sides of my shed & made holes in them trying to get at my cats, that's why I had to re-side the whole thing when I converted it to a chicken coop, It really made me mad. Eventually they got hauled to the humane society because the people who had them moved & left them there & one of them bit a child rather severely. I don't know if they're all like those two were, but I wouldn't trust them around my birds. I saw that they have that dog you're talking about on the Cowley Country Pet Swap site. They should put it on Craigslist if they haven't already.

Josie, Yeah it has been quite a lot more peaceful here since my Big Red rooster left, the hens are starting to heal from the rough treatment & they have quit hiding in the coop. That one poor Barred Rock hen just got her back torn to bits by the meanie, so it is taking awhile for her to heal. My BC Marans roo is the worst right now because he's a hormonal teenager, but even at that he's not as rough as Big Red was.

I went out & was feeding the chicks in the grow-out pen this morning & looked into the dog house they hang out in & found two more dead chicks in there, a porcelain isabel from Chooks & another Swedish Flower Hen chick. So I decided to just take the dog house out of there for now, maybe it's not a great thing for chicks to be able to pile up in. I have a heat lamp out in the pen now for at night since it's been getting cooler, so if they get cold they can come sit under it. I will put the dog house back later on when it's just the Ameraucanas in there, that is who will have the pen in the end after everybody gets to the breeder coop, the general laying flock, & sold if they're extra roos or given away which ever is the case. I know I have at least 4 lavender Orp roos in there, but I would like to see which is going to be the nicest one first when they grow out before getting rid of any. I think I will keep one for my general laying flock because I will have enough hens to have two roos after the Speckled Sussex is in with his hens. I just love that lavender color & I think a rooster that color will just be gorgeous. I still can't tell what sex my black Ameraucanas are that I kept from this year's hatch, the black is just so hard to tell on because there are no other colors & with the pea comb until they get older I don't think I will be able to sex them. None of the 3 that I kept as of yet is showing signs of being a roo. I know that would be very unusual not to get at least one in there, but they're just not developed enough yet for me to be able to tell.

Well I just scheduled both of my GPs for being spayed next Tues. so wish me luck with that. I'll be glad to get it done so we don't have unexpected puppies from who knows what dog. I just don't feel like I want to breed them either, it's too much work & money to raise puppies.

It's supposed to be 90s today & tomorrow & then cool down to the 80s for a couple of days. I guess we're at that time of year when it will go back & forth for awhile. Well everybody have a good day!

I just went out and there are two peachicks with the peahen and she is still sitting on the third. Now what to do. I really really would like her to raise them herself. But now I'm afraid that they'll drown in the water dish I have for the adults. I just dumped their big water pan they cool their feet in. I hope it doesn't get too hot out there for them. It has certainly kept them cooler so far. The humidity must be way up there. I am really sweating now.
Gotta get back out and finish chores. I just had to share!!!!

yes, it was nice when I got rid of my two roosters that were pulling all the neck feathers out of my layers. I would have kept them if it hadn't been for that.

We got a couple of big projects completed while they were here and it was really nice to have the extra sets of hands. It really is true that "many hands make light work"

So nice that you got some things checked off your to do list! I bet your parents enjoyed helping you anyway. :)

Maybe we should dedicate an entire room to our chicken drugs and chicken paraphernalia! LOL Yeah, my yard has a million feathers all over it too! Tis the season!! I'm actually relieved though... some of my silkies got sunburned pretty badly and I'm crossing my fingers that the new feathers come back in with NO leakage. Hope you get your birds sold! I think its great you are paring down to just the breeders you want to work with! I bet you will enjoy that much more.

My brother will be flying in on Thursday (from New Orleans) and will be staying with me for 10 days... you should see the To Do list I have for him lol..
So funny-- I loved HeChicken's response to this, too! I bet he won't mind helping out.

So sorry about your dead chicks. What a bummer!! I bet they were trying to dog pile. Poor dears. Not that I know anything about your dogs, but it sounds like having them done at the same time might be the best idea. Glad you're getting them done before they get too much bigger! ha! I'm looking forward to nice weather!

YAY!!!! Can you just hang a mister for that pen? I wouldn't risk the water either!! Are you sure it's hot enough to worry about them right now? We're at 97 degrees here with a bit of a wind. It's definitely hot, but not too terrible. Are they in shade? Anyway, congrats and I hope they do great!!
