I sincerely apologize for sounding as though I was scolding or trying to hurt. I truly wasn't. I think we all have different perspectives, all equally valuable, and we usually share those and learn from each other. I've never been cursed at or asked to go away. I have now and I agree that it is the best thing to do. I've enjoyed meeting all of you and apologize for the misunderstanding. Good luck in your many adventures and endeavors and I wish you the best.

I don't have a dog pen... but I think one is going to be needed. I might make a trip to Atwoods next Tuesday since I'm going to be in Derby in the afternoon... The coop will be "dog ready" (but not chicken ready just yet) tomorrow... I'm glad I have some time to find something for the day; I want her to be as comfortable as she can be, but most importantly, she needs to be safe. I do have a little fenced area that I can keep her in during the day... will ask Trish what she thinks of that since she has seen the area I'm talking about.. (I forgot my camera today when I visited - will take photo of her tomorrow... prepare for super sad puppy eyes!)

Sunflower, how far are you from Lawrence? I have a couple big metal dog crates that you could borrow if you didn't want to buy one just for a short time. They look like this: http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Life-Stages-Double-Door-Folding/dp/B0002AT3M4

Again, i miss 2 days and can't go through all 150 posts. :) My tummy is doing a bit better now. I think we have the new meds regulated.
Getting some much needed rain right now! Yay Rain!
Sad news, We had to put our 13 1/2 yr old lab down last night. He woke up and his back legs wouldn't work. We couldn't even get him to stand up to pee. It broke my heart, but knew it was the best thing to do. This really hasn't been my summer. First my kitty, then this **** disease, and now my doggy. sigh...
I hope everyone else is having a better summer. I'm ready for a new season and a new beginning to start. now.

Tweety, I'm so sorry about your dog. We have a 15 year old shorthair pointer/brittany cross. and he isn't doing very well.

When we got the chickens, we were worried that the SHP would want to attack them, but he has been a really good dog. They all pretty much ignore each other.

Charlie was a rescue twice. I adopted his mother (the Brittany) when the puppies were 2 weeks old, and then later I had to go retrieve him from his new owner because he was being neglected. Needless to say, he is a member of the family. He is on meds for arthritis and seems to be suffering from heart problems, too, so we are afraid we are on borrowed time. The only thing wrong with dogs is that they don't live long enough.

(shake off worry, continue with new topic)

I have feathers everywhere. The coop looks like a pillow exploded, and my Buff Orpington is looking really ragged (she is about 14 months old, so it may be a real molt), and the others are all losing feathers. My older girls also lost feathers at about this age, so I suppose it is that first molt, but I was expecting it to be a little later.

I'm going to do the annual cleaning sometime soon. It has been a year, and there isn't any smell, but the DE has pretty much settled to the bottom, so there is a dust issue going on. I'm planning to hose it out after I shovel out the used shavings. Since I pick up the worst of the poo every morning, there isn't much to compost. I plan to scrub the walls and tighten up a couple of places that mice are getting into the walls (yuck), too, so it will be an all day job. When I did it last year, the girls were in a real snit about their nest boxes being moved. Has to be done. What should I use to disinfect it if anything?

Tweety, I'm so sorry about your black lab. You're right, this has been a tough year on you. Hobby Lobby has cement pavers you can make in your pets honor with stones, tile, marbles, etc. Might be a great way to remember him by putting a paver in the back where he liked to hang out. We buried my little pom in the back in a spot where she used to love to sit and look out. Again, I'm so sorry.

Sharol, my whole yard back here has little feathers everywhere. The silkie pen is the worst! It just looks like a soft fluffy down pillow was shaken loose in there! The layer pen has some feathers, but it's not too bad. I'm sure hoping their bald rears grow feathers back in. My polish are looking really ragged. The polish went on strike yesterday-- I didn't get one white egg!! Even the Wyandottes didn't lay. I got only barred rock eggs--- those birds ROCK!!! Seriously, I'll remember this if i ever need more layers. :) Good reminder on cleaning out the coop! Mine hasn't been done since last October and it's time to clean it out. The deep litter has held up really well-- I'm impressed!! I need to make that a "must do" this weekend. :) Oh-- and I use Clorox on everything. Just make sure it dries and airs out, it should be fine.

Thanks for the word on good ole clorox. Great stuff. Maybe I'll put it in a pump sprayer (diluted) and just spray down everything inside.

I'm still getting 4-6 eggs a day from my 10 layers. One isn't laying, so it is really out of 9. Not too bad for the way the weather was this summer. My best layer (wait for it) is a Campine. She lays 5-6 eggs a week like clockwork except for the 3 weeks she was molting in the early spring.

Please stay dear friend! We all love you and you are a joy to be around. You always tell the funniest stories! This incident is over! Looking back it will just be a bump in the road.

Oh yes, great stuff! :) I didn't even know what a campine was-- I had to go Google it! LOL I have heard of them, but that's the limit of my knowledge. ha! The pictures I saw look very pretty, lots of baring! Is that a bantam?? That's amazing she is such a great layer. My barred rocks have been the same way-- I can't remember the last time they didn't lay.

X2 All is in the past. Moving right along.

Hey Danz, did you get your DH's attention with the all season deck? I just love that idea! I would love to put a roof extension over our back deck. Another thing-- I have the silkie grow out pen all enclosed under my deck and when it rains (that is a big "when") they get soaked. So I put a tarp over my upstairs deck with bricks on top. My DH is NOT pleased with that look and of course, then it's not as nice to use our deck now either with a tarp sitting on the floor. I need to figure out a more 'hidden' way to keep rain out. Maybe something under the deck. I'm brainstorming, but I figure it will have to have some kind of a pitch to it so the water will run off to one side.

Scout, the Campine, is a real character. She is half the size of the other hens -- though not a bantam -- and bosses everyone around except the roo. She nags and complains if they don't get out of the run as early as she would like, and she is my DH's favorite chicken (this from the man who wasn't keen on chickens). THis picture is a little old, but she still looks about the same ;-).

Oh, she's beautiful!! I love the baring on her. She has a sweet expression-- her beak almost curves up in a smile! hehe!

I need to get busy. I've already been in and out several times moving the hose around watering trees. I have a lot more on my 'to do' list than that! I just feel like laying around, we were up late watching a movie and the kids were up really early this morning, even though we let them stay up late to enjoy some fun movie time.
