Consolidated Kansas

KarenS, you could always make smaller hoop coops & make more than one. You would just need to recruit all of your chicken helpers to help you bend the panels to hook them to the frame. I did mine like one person on BYC did since I was doing things by myself, I hooked the first 3 panels to the side boards with the fencing nails & then used the one side to push it over to hook onto the end. I did try using the tie-down straps, but it just didn't work that well for me, I guess I didn't know what I was doing that well. The only reason my hoop coop is 16 ft long is that I'm using it for peafowl & the males especially need more room for their long tails. I figured out how to do that wood brace in the back & front from looking at other people's pics & it actually worked out really well, it makes it a lot more stable. What I like about the hoop coop that is an issue with my other dog run pens is that it's rounded on top so water & snow won't sit up there & cause the roof to fall in, plus those livestock panels are really heavy duty too. The only thing I wish I had done different is I should have painted the boards before using them, that I wish I had done, but oh well, we'll see how long they last the way they are. I do still have two more full length livestock panels, so at some point when I have the time & energy I could make another smaller pen or coop with those. I might as well use them since I have them. My DH also mentioned using the one we already cut for my chicken run door to bend over the two dog runs I have problems with to make rounded tops on those. I told him he would have to help me do that, so it will probably be later on, but I would like to do it before winter to keep snow from making the tops fall in on the pens. The turkey pen is the absolute worst for holding water & it gets so heavy I have to ask my DH to push it back out.

Danz, I have wood siding to go over OSB, it's the same siding we put on our other coop when we had to replace it all. When we converted the shed to a coop we had to replace all the siding on it because it was old & rotted in places & I had neighbor dogs that came over & chewed big holes in the sides trying to get at my cats. I'm glad those dogs are no longer around, they were destructive & nobody kept them under control. On the main coop we didn't have OSB sides, it was just like that when we got it, but on my new one I wanted OSB over the frame & then the siding over that. I will have to paint it then after that is all up. Yeah, my DH is someone who thinks everything has to be very precise & there are times when it isn't that crucial. I appreciate that he wants to do things right, but as you said it takes him forever & a day to plan, it has to be on paper with precise measurements, & then when he starts actually building then it takes him two or three times longer than other people to get it done. I just want the thing done before we leave on vacation. Some of the birds may be getting kind of crowded in the pen they're in by the time everything is done, but I have nowhere else to put them right now. There are a few in the grow-out pen like the 3 Welsummers that will go into my general laying flock & they're getting almost big enough to go there, it will be before too long. Then I have 3 black Ameracuanas that I still can't tell for sure what sexes they are & there are several lavender Orpingtons that I'm pretty sure are roosters, so all but one of those will have to find new homes. I hope to have about all of the different ones to their respective pens or whatever before winter. That pen is going to be where my Wheaten & Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas will reside after I get all of the various breeders to the new breeder coop.

Well it's time to go cook lunch, so I best get off here. I got about 15 messages on FB while I was trying to type this, so I think my whole train of thought went out the window, oh well.

Good to see you again Sapphire.
Trish your coop looks great. What kind of siding are you using on it? I think your DH is a lot like mine. He does excellent precise work but it just takes a long time to get the ball rolling. I always kid him about how it takes 5 weeks of planning to do a 5 minute job. And then the 5 minute job takes 5 hours!
I worked too hard yesterday and I sure feel it today. I have tons to do too. I've got to get eggs ready to go to town, and maybe haul a duck down south. Waiting to hear on that one for sure.
Just too many things I need to do.
I'm so glad I don't still have kids in school like so many of you do.
I also just realized a conflict in schedules. Next weekend is the Gardner auction. I am meeting several friends there and have a couple business deals to make there. I look forward to this for 6 months at a time. Some of my friends from out of state will be there as well. It just occurred to me it is the same day my youngest granddaughter's 2nd birthday party is scheduled. I'm trying to figure out how on earth I can be two places at once. I'm waiting to hear back on a time schedule so I can figure out how to swing things. DH won't want to go to Gardner and spend the day with me so he will have to drive up to Olathe separately. That alone is worrisome cause he will be late. He always is.
Karen, I haven't seen a buff sussex in person before. I wonder if they are as sweet as the other sussex. I do have once again these are the sweetest birds ever. Are you using those in your Aloha program or just for eye candy?
Speaking of danz-sizing I am getting more eggs from Eileen's Mom tomorrow and also thinking of ordering some fancy colored brahmas and some breda fowl eggs. It's a package deal so I don't know what I would end up with in colors on the brahmas. They have Buff Laced, Gold Laced, Silver Laced, Black Laced Red, Blue Laced Red, Blue Laced Gold. The breda fowl are just something I think would be pretty unique to have. I do wish I could choose my colors. That would be best.

Danz - Aren't those SSX awesome?!?! Mine are always at my feet when I am outside. When I show up they start "talking" to me.

Danz, the Buff Sussex are great for my Aloha program but I also want to breed them separately. Like Rob, I've fallen in love with the Sussex breed and am hoping the Buff are as charming as the Speckled. The Buff Sussex crossed with the Speckled Sussex should make a confetti Sussex with a lighter base color than the Speckled. Someone already did that and I would love to raise the 3 breeds along with the Alohas. I have a few Lavender and Isabel Orps to add some pale gray to the ginger and white speckled girls. They are really beautiful and have great personalities too. Then I have my EE's that I can't live without. So I'll have Buff Sussex, Speckled Sussex, Confetti Sussex, Easter Eggers, Lav/Isabel Orps and Alohas that I will be raising and selling next spring, along with my Ancona and Cayuga ducks. The only other thing I'm considering right now is raising some Bourbon Reds, but I haven't asked Turkey if she wants a boyfriend. :)

Trish, I really think I may just do that next year. A bit smaller would be better for my crew anyway. I have the tarps on my breeder pens but they fill with rain, just like you said, and it's a nuisance. Maybe I can just put domes over the tops of those. I'll have to do a little more research and see how that may work.

Pikeman, I also like the Sussex, but my newest pullets seem pretty pushy compared to the one I lost in the heat. They fly on my back sometimes when I bend down to pick up food bowls or try to steal the food right out of bowls I'm trying to fill up before I can get them down. I hope they will settle down as they mature.

Well I think I have my last two little Mini Rex bunnies sold, I have a lady coming in a couple of hours to get them. That just leaves a pair of Chinchilla rabbits & one other adult male Mini Rex to pare down before cold weather & I have to move them all inside. People are finally starting to buy rabbits again now that it's cooling off, so that's good to see. People were having a really hard time selling rabbits this summer with it being so darned hot.

I just found out the one little male peacock I'm getting is a cameo, so I'm excited about that because not everyone has that color. Josie, I know yours are cameos, but it's not a real common color that people have. The other male I was supposed to be getting is a black shoulder split to pied, but I don't know if that woman is ever going to be able to catch that one, so far he has been elusive. If I find another black shoulder one that is younger up in KC I may just get that instead & then they would be closer in age. The cameo male is 3 mo. old, the same as my peahens. I'm really liking the peacocks, I wasn't sure if I would or not, but they're so regal looking & mine are starting to get used to me, especially now that I can walk into their coop with them. They're starting to get their color & even though they're females they are still very pretty.

Yes the sussex are the best, Rob! I have hatched several of them too. I sold all the first batch but I have several more so we'll see if they do okay. One of my big old brahmas has discovered the young ladies too now the sussex roo has a little competition. Someday, I'll get them all separated. I did start putting their eggs in with my other egg orders since they are finally getting a little bigger. But I love chickens that are spoiled babies. Eileen has some silver sussex but they look so much like other breeds I'm not sure I want any.
Trish you and I are kind of in the same boat but mine is more like a ship. If this darn weather would cool down so I wasn't dying out there it would help. I just can't work in the high heat and humidity.
I took one of my pekin males and traded for two females today. Hopefully that means I'll end up with more duck eggs. I think I could sell all I could produce. Of course I sell them way too cheap. I make a lot more off of the babies but I need a break from hatching ducks for a while.
I got my eggs delivered to town and took care of a couple other things. Busy day.
Karen if I ever get to where I can actually manage my chickens I would like to do some color breeding. I know I am going to have to keep danzsizing and eliminate some of what I have. I did find a buyer for my blue polish so that is a few more birds out of here soon. Hopefully I'll do some more little by little.
Of course I just keep buying hatching eggs for something new so that complicates things!!

So Lucie is coming back. Apparently the youngest son is allergic to her and got a sinus infection. I recommended giving her a bath to see if that would help calm down his allergies but I guess 4 hours later they are not miraculously cured so they give up and don't want to keep her. Never mind it could be FALL and seasonal allergies like ragweed and mold are at their highest counts right now. Or maybe giving the dog a bath and waiting a few days instead of a few hours to see if that helps. I don't even think it is the poor dogs fault. I would venture to bet it isn't even dogs but something in the air. They have had dogs in the past and play with the neighbors shedding dogs all the time. Should have gone with the goat people!!!! Geez.....

Danz, you need to stop buying more eggs! I decided not to get another breed until next spring. That way I will have all of my breeds I have now in their spots in the breeder coop & can assess my space & see where I could put one more hoop coop. I know it would probably fit out there close to the other hoop coop, but I would rather wait until I have all of the pens up for my breeders & then add on. There is still one imported breed I would like to have & I know there are some people that are going to import even more breeds next year, so there could be something even more interesting to try to acquire then. Danz, you might want to see what is coming too. I have seen where Jordan Farms is importing more & the guy I bought my Cream Legbar eggs from also says he is importing some other breeds, then there is always Greenfire Farms who is always bringing in new breeds. So next year may be even more exciting, we'll have to wait & see. I like to get things that nobody in my area has, so I would like to keep it like that for awhile. I have a waiting list for the spring already started & hope to use the FB swap besides CL to advertise. It's nice that we have so many avenues to network with people these days that we never had before. We used to have to put ads in the newspaper & they weren't cheap & now we have all of these free things & it's great. I'm on so many swap sites on FB sometimes it's hard to keep track where I put things when I have to go take an ad down!

Josie, oh sorry about having to take Lucie back. I sure thought that was going to work out great. Back to the drawing board huh? Well put her back on the Farm Swap, it seems like the dogs that have been on there have found homes. I think the gal with the antolian/pyrs sold all of her pups.

Do you still have the goat people's number? I guess they'll figure out it wasn't the dog when the kid stays sick! I had some people here last week that were looking for a GP but unfortunately they had birds. If I hear of anyone I will let you know. How much are you asking for her?

I can't stop!! I have to buy eggs. It's an obsession!! I really think I am headed the right direction though. I'm eliminating a lot of stuff and putting in a lot more practical, as well as eye candy birds. I may ultimately sell some of what I am getting if they don't meet my expectations.
There are a couple more breeds I am hoping to get later. Some of the imports are awesome.

Oh and more bad news. I finally heard from the guy with the peachicks. He is working nights and busy, but he said a skunk got in and got one of his babies. I don't know if I am ever going to get a peachick. Maybe I'll find one at Gardner.

Josie, I am so sorry to hear that. I agree - it probably wasn't Lucie. I can see causing allergies but a sinus infection is a different thing altogether and I'm highly skeptical a dog could cause a sinus infection. Maybe the goat people are still interested?

I hope you find on at Gardner - it does seem like this other guy has kind of kept you hanging for awhile.

Well, I got my free pen put together this evening and I am so happy with it. It turns out there were brackets with it after all. Only 4, but that was all I needed. For a dog you'd probably want 8 but for my purposes, 4 worked out fine. I just put them in the center instead of top and bottom and they held the panels together just fine. Then I reinforced it with chicken wire around the bottom two feet, since the chicks can run right through the chain link, and put a tarp over the top and voila, it is ready for occupation. Tomorrow morning the chicks will go in it and they will be so happy to have all that extra space! I'll have to take photos tomorrow. The light was already getting dim by the time I finished up tonight.
