Consolidated Kansas

Josie if you get on here I referred a guy to contact you here about Seramas. He had found an old add someplace and called me. I also invited him to join the group. He indicated his wife might actually do it rather than him.
Thanks, he did message me and I will get back with him. Those eggs of yours are having the most ridiculous staggered hatch ever. It is like two chicks every other day!
I just got a message that a couple people were wanting ducks and pullets. Maybe I sold too fast and too cheap. I really don't have any young girls to sell right now unless I could catch a few of the wild ones that would have a couple more months until they lay.
Hey, if you hear of anyone wanting adult ducks I am going to sell my crew. I need to lighten the load, I just can't keep up with them and want them to go to someone who has more time and energy.
Hi. I'm new here and this place is really hoppin'. Just wanted to say HELLO and I'm from SE Kansas, Humboldt area.
Welcome mommahen!
Welcome mommahen! Tell us about yourself.
Just posted a few pictures of my silly peachick. He was sitting on my lap trying to type for me, but then decided to jump up and eat my hair. He's getting huge and very spoiled!
Had to put him down when he turned around and pooped on my legs though!!!

Danz- That bird is ridiculous, you are never going to be able to move it outside. You are going to have a full grown pea fowl living in your house!!

I finally gave in and took Butch (the roo) to the vet for his bumblefoot today. To my surprise, my vet said it wasn't really very far advanced. He cleaned it out and packed it and wrapped it. He also gave us antibiotics (oral) for several days. Butch was VERY good at the vet's. I guess I can do the clean out next time, and my vet says he will give me the antibiotics if I need them.

On Thursday I'm supposed to remove the wrappings and check out the wound for healing. We shall see.

I swore I wouldn't take a chicken to the vet, but Butch is special.
Ohhh, good for you. I have taken several chickens and one of my geese to the vet.
Hechicken it's easy to get confused with my managerie. I even do sometimes! You'd think I could settle on just a few kinds of birds!!!
The way things have been going lately it seems attrition is taking it's toll though. I just went back out to water again and found a hawk trying to get into the pheasant pen. I have a hen with a brand new chick out there. I'm surprised he didn't go after it.
I can't help but wonder if the government continuously tries to protect the predatorial animals are there going to be any decent animals left?
Yikes, I need to get my pens re covered with mesh, I knew it was getting close to hawk season. I know they are an important predator but I would like them to predate on something other than my birds. I have never had problems with red tails just the smaller coopers hawks.
Do the LGD's try to scare away hawks or are they only interested in 4-legged predators?
Hahahaha! One morning I was out taking care of everyone and a red tail was swooping really low over the pens and I yelled at it and waved my hands a lot and Molly came running over looking at me like "what is going on!" so I pointed up and she looked up (which I personally think is brilliant) and let out a huge WOOF! The hawk flew away. She is a silly dog. She will bark at the turkey vultures if they circle too much above our property too.

Hi to everyone I probably missed. If anyone is interested I am selling some of my ducks including 3 silver and white crested ducks (maybe magpie or anconas?) 1 male, 2 females, 3 cayuga ducks, 1 male, 2 female, and four black and white magpies (supposed to be all female but I think one might be a male) They are all this years hatches and many are laying. I also have nine red broilers that should be ready for butcher in about a month if anyone wants some meat birds for cheap. I need to down size a bit, I just can't keep up with everyone.
Can't think of much else, boy am I boring today!

The vet said that my roo's left foot wasn't bumblefoot, just a scab from a healing sore. The right foot was definitely bumble, though. I hate that stuff. I just wish I could figure out where they are getting the initial injuries.

Yes my dogs pursue hawks and owls, however during the day they often don't notice them until the birds squawk, and at night the owls are so fast they can grab a bird off a high perch without making a sound. I am going to have to go back to making sure everyone is locked up again at least in a covered pen at night.
The hawks hunt during the day though which makes it bad for free rangers.
I have one hen with bumble I've been treating. She hasn't acted sick but she had a bad case. She is easy to spot because I used blue vet wrap on her feet! So far she is the only one I've noticed. I had a rooster limping last week but he didn't have bumble foot.
I think the hen likes the vet wrap and gauze. I noticed she has been walking on the driveway, which is gravel a lot more. Normally you can tell it hurts the chicken's feet. Chicken shoes!

Is any one interested in some welsummer eggs? Unknown rooster. I knew she was laying and found the nest today. I think there are 7 speckled eggs and I will be taking them and replace some with wooden eggs hoping she will keep laying. I found several nests today and NONE of those eggs will have a snowball chance of adding chicks to my overpopulation. Including the scovie eggs. More work for tonights chore list.

Wish I had gotton the eggs painted.

Hawkeye, that is funny about Seymore fitting into anything. Okay, I will stop worrying now! One of the door companies I looked at had two different size doors - one for chickens and one for turkeys. The company I went with only had the one size but since the other company made two different ones, I did start to worry that a standard door wouldn't suffice. I bet the turkey door the other company made is designed for the big commercial birds, not these smaller, heritage turkeys.
Your rooster is beautiful! And yeah, those RP's can really squeeze into small holes! I think you'll be fine. :)

Okay, genetics gurus, I have a couple of questions. First is about the blue (green) egg gene. Is that gene dominant or recessive? I.e. will an EE rooster over brown or white egg laying hens produce chicks that lay green eggs, white/brown eggs, or a mix of the two? Or, put another way, what is the likelihood of a particular chick from that combination laying green eggs?

And on yellow legs, is that a recessive trait? I hadn't really stopped to think about it until I read more about the Aloha project and went out to look at my flock and realized I have practically NO yellow legs. I have one hen who has kind of pinkish/yellow legs. They are not as bright yellow as some I've seen, but not pink like BO's pink either. Interestingly, of the 9 chicks I hatched, I have one chick that has quite yellow legs. I figure the mother of that one HAS to be the hen with the pale yellow legs, although the chick's legs are much more yellow than that hen. So it got me to thinking about how yellow legs come about too.

There is nothing at stake on the answers to either of these questions, except to satisfy my curiosity.
Depending on the breed, the yellow legs are desirable. Some genes can be incomplete-- so you would need one or both parents actually expressing the desired gene to pass it on to offspring. I know barred rocks are supposed to have yellow legs, but I know mine don't.. I'm guessing if I were to breed them, it might never express because of undesirable parentage. Even if you aren't sure of if your gene is dominate, recessive or incomplete, it might be a little obvious to state that you must start with at least one bird of two that have the desired traits being expressed, and then cull hard to get the desired expression. I've been diving into silkie genetics and am getting familiar with what combs, feet, colors and bases are linked with, but that's about the extent of my knowledge! No idea on the eggs!!

Got a pair of Mandarins for sale. Call or text 785-845-1609

I LOVE HIM!!!! He's beautiful!!!!!

First, Hi everyone and I am doing great! lol I am still under a doc's care and still have things effect me ie the STORMS, love 'em, but HATE the way I feel with the pressure changes!
Verna LOVE the peacock pic! That is tooo cute, I know I have missed much and can't catch up, it said 10,000 posts almost! ARGH! Can't catch up that much!

Anyway, I don't think about dinner, and I NEED to; so I thought if someone gave me hints suggestions on a menu for over the next month, I might start getting more inspired and-thinking about dinner if I have something I don't have to think about; pull and get done etc...

Help please? :)
Glad you are feeling better! :)
I love beef stew, and the way I make it is REALLY easy.
1 lb ground beef browned and chopped
1 can of sweet corn
1 can of green beans
1 can of carrots
1 can of red kidney beans
then I dice up a bunch of potatoes-- but you could used canned potatoes
throw in beef broth-- about 2 cups and then put in a packet of "beef stew" seasoning.
Simmer and serve! :) Don't need any side dishes unless you want to eat with Saltines.

My family also loves Mexican Casserole:
1 can of MexiCorn
1 can of cream of chicken soup
1 lb browned ground beef
2 cups of cheese (I use shredded sharp cheddar)
8 oz sour cream
1 cup macaroni noodles (boil until tender)
dash of onion (I either chop up a bit or just use onion flakes)
add a clove of garlic (well chopped or minced)
dash of salt and pepper
*mix beef, drained macaroni and cheese, sour cream and rest of ingredients in a large mixing bowl and pour into a casserole dish. I save back some of the cheese and use it as topping. Bake at 350 until the top of the cheese is melted.

We also love potato soup and I have a fast and easy way to do that too!
1 eleven oz pkg of "Bear Creek Creamy Potato" (on the soup aisle)
I sub out a cup of the recommended water for Milk.
Then I add about 3-4 spoon fulls of sour cream
I then dice up boiled potatoes (i leave skins on them) and throw in about 3 potatoes diced
I then throw in about 1/2 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
DONE!!! (after it cooks for the recommended amount of time on the soup pkg)

And lastly, this can be done many ways, but Taco Salad:
1 bag of frito chips
1 lb browned ground beef
fixings! lettuce, tomato, cheese, taco sauce, kidney beans, etc...
I mix browned beef, kidney beans and frito chips together and then add in the lettuce and cheese and anything else you want to top it with and finish with taco sauce. You can really change it up as you wish.

I left out all of my chicken dishes-- they are mainly enchiladas, homemade fettucini alfredo w/ chicken, chicken noodle soup, general tao's chicken, chicken fried rice, etc..

Amoxicillin. 2ml once a day. 6 days.
sounds great!! Hope he heals up fast!! :)

Send me a PM and let me know what you want for any of the female ducks. That is what this guy is looking for. Glad the guy got in touch with you. Maybe you can make some $$. Sporatic or not at least I guess the chicks are hatching! Are you getting many whites?

Oh don't say that!! I just need a buddy to house him with. He hates being alone. Have you ever seen a peafowl that tame??? He won't have anything to do with Dennis but he sure likes cuddling up to me.

Yikes, I need to get my pens re covered with mesh, I knew it was getting close to hawk season. I know they are an important predator but I would like them to predate on something other than my birds. I have never had problems with red tails just the smaller coopers hawks.

Well my stupid dogs were sleeping, except Marshmallow. She was in the house eating cat food!!!

I went out later to hear the peafowl yelling, the geese chatting, and see the red stars running for cover. Something obviously had just swooped down on that side of the yard. I really don't have any more birds I care to loose to predation!!!

We just had a fly by dinner tonight. I call they fly bys, because while I love to cook -there are times that I dont have time or energy to prepare everything the night before, so it has to be easy enough for my kids to fly by the seat of their pants so to speak, and pull something from the freezer and heat it up.We just made a huge crockpot of beef and noodles, which I freeze in quart size bags to heat quickly.3lbs stew meat, 2tbs worschestershire sauce, 4cans beefy mushroom soup, 4cans water- leave on high in crockpot over night. Add 3bags frozen egg noodles and leave on low for 4 hours. Add 1bag frozen peas and 2cans of corn and 2 cans of sliced mushrooms. I make mashed potatoes ahead of time and freeze bags of them also. They just pull them out of the freezer. Dump them in a big glass bowl and heat it up in the microwave. My oldest even makes it all on her own and freezes meals for her grandpa. If time isn't in a huge pinch, I prefer to use whole foods, but kids understand dumping and counting cans... :)

Danz, Sera wants to see that peachick! So do I :) So funny!!

Hawkeye, I am going to def try your versions of potato soup and Mexican casserole. Your others sound very familiar as some of our stand bys :). That casserole you mentioned sounds yummy too, Danz. We don't eat much beef unless I can doctor it up to be easily chewed here also. It sounds similar to what we just made for dinner but with a nice spicy twist. I will have to experiment :)

eh, phoenix, schmenix! SILKIES!! That is what you need!! Hey, I have one for you, too. You can have him FREE!!!! hehehe! :) He is real spunky, but a sweetie if you just want to hold him and snuggle him. He's right about 4 months. LOL

OH! He is gorgeous!!!!

Well I'm open to taking someone's spare Roo, but I'm not sold on those Silkies. Still not convinced they're actually chickens ! My new coop will be finished Oct 1st if anyone needs to unload one. I also wouldn't mind two more hens like a golden-laced wyandotte or campine. Basically I need some golden coloration as I aim to cover the whole rainbow of hues . . . Also - I thought the Welsummer Roo was the "gold standard" of roosters. No ??

MarcAustin, silkies are wonderful! I had two roosters and I was totally smitten with them after just a short time. They are very endearing and friendly and have quirky little personalities that it is impossible not to like. I have a friend who is afraid of birds but I told her I wanted to introduce her to my silkies because they're really more like animated plush toys - they don't seem like birds at all, probably because of the different feathering. Mine actually used to come when I called them and it was so cool to go out and spot them at the far side of the chicken yard, call them, and then watch these plush toys come running across the yard as fast as their little legs would carry them, to practically jump into my arms for some lovin'.

Hawkeye, I have copied down your recipe for Mexican casserole - I am always interested in something different. When I bought the last beef from my mennonite friend, it was an older cow so there was a LOT of hamburger. New ways to prepare hamburger are always welcome.

Medawinks, I have never heard of "beefy mushroom soup" - I'll have to look out for that.

For anyone interested, I have a dish I make that I call GNG and since its a cute story I'll tell you what it stands for. Years ago I threw together some food for the kids one night that they raved over and asked me to make again. So I did, over and over. The pot made enough to package some up for lunch the next day so I would take it to work. Well, one day after making this dish, I decided to throw in a can of black beans, and anyone who has worked with black beans, can imagine that it made the whole dish take on kind of a greyish hue. Next day at work someone asked what I had brought for lunch and I self-deprecatingly told him "Grey Noodle Goop". He said "Oh, GNG" and the name stuck. To this day we call it GNG regardless of whether or not it has black beans in it or not.

GNG
Ingredients:
Variable to include:
Can(s) whole kernel corn
Can(s) green beans
Can(s) peas
Can(s) dried beans (black bean, lima etc.)
Can(s) cream of mushroom soup
Can(s) tuna, drained (or substitute fake crab, browned hamburger or browned sausage, or leave out meat altogether for a vegetarian dish
Shredded cheese
Macaroni, rotini or shells

While pasta is cooking, open can(s) of mushroom soup, add shredded cheese to taste, and as many cans of vegetables as you desire or have on hand. Mix all together and serve.

As you can imagine, this dish is extremely variable. We have it once a week or every other week and it is different practically every time.
