I'll let you know how it works! I'm wondering if it's a mild blueing since it is a deep purple color. We have a Valley Feed and Seed here in Wichita on Meridian.

These birds aren't white-- they are splash, so they have a light blue base. Which is why I was told not to use blueing on them. But I figure... maybe it will still brighten them up anyway, even though they aren't white?
I've got eggs from Big Spotty/various hens in the incubator that I'm so excited to see hatch on the 26th! I'm gathering eggs from Big Red now and will put them in tomorrow and a week from tomorrow I'll start gathering eggs fertilized by my Aloha roo, Ricky. I'm so excited to get these crosses going finally.
I'm going to be having excess cockerels available within the month. The youngest are Swedish Flowers and they are only about 4 weeks right now. The others are a bit older, between 8 to 12 weeks old, I'm guessing. They are porcelain and lavender Orpingtons, and black Ameraucanas. In November, I will have a couple of the more colorful Aloha roos available who are now approx 5 months old.
Congrats on all your eggs! SO exciting setting your own birds eggs. Hey, let me know if you have a porcelain orp roo who isn't spoken for, I would LOVE one!

Silly house pea! Are you getting more pea chicks still?
Not a very good day on the backyard farm. Came home to find that 6 of might 8 chickens had been killed by 2 stray pit bulls that jumped the fence. One bird is pretty banged up, but still alive. Not expecting her to make it thru the night, but so far so good. Another bird was missing altogether (not in the yard). She showed back up about an hour after I got home trying to find her way back to the coop. She's missing a lot of feathers & has a few bites & scratches, but is holding up really well. Better than I am. Not really sure how I'm handling it honestly. I've raised these birds since they were 3 days old. A lot of time, energy, effort, money & care have gone into this hobby. Not sure what I'm going to do at this point. If my one bird doesn't make it that will leave me with just one. She knows something is up & has been looking for the other birds for hours. Not sure I'm going to even try & get any more birds this late in the year especially with winter just around the corner. I may have to re-home her just so she's not alone. Then I can decide in the spring if I want to try again or just let it all go. Still pretty emotional about the whole ordeal & have decided not to make any final decisions right now. I'm just glad I wasn't home to see it happen. Fortunately, my neighbor witnessed the whole thing & was able to identify the dogs for animal control & they picked up the dogs & took them away.
On a side note, the one thing the animal control officer did point out to me was that I did not have the proper permit for the number of birds I had. I've known that for some time & the form is sitting on the desk. Just never took the time to fill it out & send it in. She did not write me a citation, but said that an officer may be back by to write me one if they deemed it necessary. The officer knew I was pretty upset so I think she cut me some slack. So I guess what I'm saying if you need a permit & don't have one yet take the time to get it done.
Oh no! I am so very sorry, how tragic. That is the worst feeling to lose your birds that you have raised, it is just terrible.
Still at school but am headed home, will try to read and catch up there. Have to ask now though in hopes of a response when I get home....
What does a broody silkie look like?
My DD's splash silkie has decided to sit with her tail in the air like she is laying an egg and will not get out of that position. I put her outside the nesting box and she still sits that way until I move away and she moves back into the nesting box.....
Is she egg bound or broody????
I hate to lose another one of my kids favorite pets......
Oh, that sounds darn broody to me!! That is what silkies do best!
She makes a funny growl noise when I pick her up and is now walking around eating. I honestly don't know what position they lay eggs in.... She has fluffed her wings out and her tail is up, with her head lower. I haven't seen her poop though....
Oh if she is growling she is BROODY!!! Silly girl.
David I'm sorry about your chickens.
I have had a really awful day. I lost my sweet Tyggy today. It is hard to explain how you can love a cat that much, cause she was so different and special. I've had her since she was a couple weeks old and her mother got killed. I hand fed her cause she was too young to eat. I was her Mom and we shared a very special bond. I feel so broken.
Danz- SO very sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you during this difficult time.
Medawinks, sounds pretty suspicious if your silkie is growling at you!! She might be broody! They can really let you know they are unhappy. Watch her tomorrow and if she spends a lot of time sitting down and finding a corner all to herself, then I'm guessing that's her deal. Sometimes they will just favor a dark corner instead of a nest box. At least mine will, crazy birds. But if she's walking around-- then she's not broody.
Hawkeye- My broodies get up and walk around to eat and drink or if I disturb them on their nest. They will walk around making their cluck, cluck broody noise and put their bums up in the air and wings down and flog anything that goes near them!
Trish-Everything worked out fine with the post about Lucie. I was just really upset that someone would write something so critical without even knowing me or the dog. I would never put her in a situation where I thought she wouldn't do well. Sorry to hear your girls think guineas are so exciting. I find our heeler can't hardly stand not chasing the guineas because they make such a racket and they fly!
Such a gorgeous day today! We did a lot but not near as much as I thought we would get done. DH woke up with a huge rash on his leg that he didn't even notice until I pointed it out so after assessing that it wasn't there last night and determining that it could be a spider bite we went to the emergency room and they put him on antibiotics.
I think he is going to live but he has been milking it for all its worth!
Moved chicks from the garage to the hoop house outside finally. They were so glad to have more space. I got a catch rope back on our naughty mini who isn't that bad anymore but lost his halter out in the pasture. We went to town and did a bunch of errands and even test drove a few new cars. I have an older jeep and it is getting high in the mileage department and a bit of a hole in our pocket so DH wants to replace it. Tried out a chevy equinox and a chevy terrain (I think thats what it was called) They were both really nice, I haven't ever had a new car so it will be quite the luxury if we can budget for it!
