ARe you talking about chickens, ducks or both?

Chickens.
If it is going through them and coming out whole they aren't getting enough grit. Nothing should go through a chicken like that. Just sayin'.

I wished i could do this awesome stuff
Anyone can do upholstery. It does take some stretching and pulling. Very simply to try it, try something very simple with smooth lines and old upholstery in tact. You simply remove each piece, mark it so you know where it goes and cut an exact replica of it. I usually cut a little larger. Make a note what order the pieces came off and put them back on in the reverse order. Use a stapler, preferably an air stapler; but I used an electric one for years. None of these projects here had anything to use for a pattern othe than the love seat, so I had to make my own. I also had to do repair to all of them and replace padding on them. Tufting is they hardest thing to do. Springs really stink cause I hurt myself every time I do them. But a basic upholstery job is a snap. I've done tons of pieces for myself and other people. I love antiques and that includes these pieces, but modern pieces are even easier to upholster. I started doing this in the 70's and am self taught. No books or courses, I just studied how furniture was done.
ok I picked up vit e caps they are 400 iu and I got poly-vi-sol no iron which one do I do or can I do one today and the other tomorrow? Which do I do?
If I were going to do one or the other I would do the vitamin E but there is no reason not to do both. I normally give Vitamin E at least twice a day to a disoriented chick.
Thanks to the person who posted the video on how to sex waterfowl. I'm sure he makes it look easier than it is, but at least now I think I am capable of doing it!
I didn't watch the video but I sex my ducks all the time. You have to learn the right pressure and where to pull on them. It just takes a while to get the hang of it.
Quote:
Ok I gave the vit E capsule to her she drank it as I squeezed it out, such a good girl.
How often do I give it and should I give the poly-vi-sol also,,
Now on to the next problem, I have a turkey with an injured leg. It is swollen at the base of the leg at the foot. All toes are swollen as well. Were is my turkey doc..
I give children's tylenol (cheapest I can find) for swelling without an apparent cause. Just a little from the dropper. But you need to see if you can figure out what is causing the swelling if you can. Check the bottom of the feet as well as feel the leg and ankle for injuries.

Wow! What a bummer! I have the electric poultry fencing, too, and would hate to come across such a scene. Good job nursing her back to health. I'm so glad she's doing well.

Are they going to just take a break in treatments or stop it entirely? How stressful for all of you.

Karen, You be careful with those bottle rockets. You know your accident record!

I can say that cause I think mine is worse.
You have a large craft room? I want a large craft room someday with a quilting machine. My nest will soon be empty and I will not be busy going to high school and college games to watch my kids in their sports. I'll have more time, sure hope I have the energy to do all I've been thinking about to help me adjust to the empty nest.
Karen has an awesome craft room. If you stick around here you will end up getting a lot more chickens and other birds and you won't have time for many crafts.

I always thought when I retired I would have time to do all kinds of things. I have many projects I got years ago and they are still waiting. Seems I spend all my time just taking care of birds. I still hope to get back to my crafts some day.

Well I did my normal feeding and watering. Then I cleaned out a slot in the brooder house and moved the baby Swedish Flower hens out there. Then I got their previous bin ready and moved my brahma and d'uccle babies to that bin. They were in a really small one and crowded before the move. I have more eggs hatching so I had to get some things arranged quickly.
Dh had to go to work later so I went out and started building a make do divider in one of the peacock pens. I put it in there with screws so it would be fairly easy to remove at a later date without damaging the building. I didn't really have a plan but am pleased with the outcome. The plan thoug was to build this divider and frame work in the building then take a 6' X 10' gate panel and attach it diagonally to the frame work so it would have some outside space and a gate.
I got the thing all dug and with my last few ounces of effort got the gate panel drug over from the other side of the yard. I was so excited how well this project was going. Then to my horror I discovered my gate to the big pen is about 4 inches too narrow to angle the panel across to get it inside. I really don't want to remove fencing to get a panel in there. I was going to do the same thing in the turkey pen but use another 6 X 10 panel to divide the pen further so I could house the blue slate turkeys in the same big pen as the midgets. It's not going to happen! I had this so clear in my mind and DH even thought it would work well. Best laid plans!!!
I'm still trying to get laundry done. I have my bedding in various stages of washing and drying right now. I normally like to do the sheets on Monday but DH was still on night shift.
Seems like another day just wizzed by.

Oh my goodness - I was gone most of the day today and came home to find 7 pages of new posts! It has taken me most of an hour just to read and get caught up...

Good morning from SW Kansas.

I used a PeanutShell as a sling for all of my babies. You just stick them down in there, and it looks and sounds daunting at first, but when they are newborn-- that is the BEST time to use it. Then they can be carted around hands free! If you want my PeanutShell, I was going to take it to a baby shop, but you can just have it if you want. It would be your size, because I bought the "small". It's a plain Kaki color, but it will go with anything.
just imagine this sling in a solid Kaki color (tan). It has a padded rail too, to make it very comfortable. I LOVED it. Once you get the hang of it, it's super easy and really not that hard. Easy to grocery shop, etc. :) It grows with baby, so you can use it when they want to sit up, too.
I had that same sling when my babies were little - loved it!

Well, after I posted here last night, I went out to do last check on the animals, since I hadn't been here most of the day. I'm glad I did! One of the cockerels was roosted on top of the Marans tractor, so I picked him up and put him over the fence. As I did, I noticed the fence (electrified poultry netting) appeared to have something laying on it, weighing it down very low, to where the chickens could get out. It was a chicken! I thought, "oh great and I'm sure she's dead". I grabbed her legs and started to untangle her. She was stiff and cold, but as I turned her over and started dislodging her wings from the tangled mess, I noticed under her wings were still very warm. So, I figured she hadn't been dead long and I would just go ahead and process her. Well, as I got more of the netting off of her, I could hear her breathing. It was very raspy because the netting was tangled around her neck. I was finally able to free her and she was just shivering like crazy, poor girl! I'm sure she was in shock. I zipped her up in my sweatshirt to warm her up while I finished checking on everyone, then took her inside. She had no damage on her anywhere, but her right leg was very cold and toes were curled. I held her for awhile longer, then put her in the brooder with the heat lamp on for a little while, just to get her warmed back up and gave her some electrolyte water to drink. In this case, thankfully, the battery on the solar fence charger has worn down, so no current was going through her while she was in the fence. This morning, she was just fine, her leg is working again and warm. She's been making her little chicken noises and scratching around in the brooder, so she will go back out to the pen this evening. Poor thing, it just makes me sick to think how long she might have been in that fence :(
Oh my goodness, I'm so glad you found her when you did and that she perked up overnight.

Well I got Jasmine fixed so she won't go after the guineas & now I have to work on Lily. It had been Jasmine that was the problem with them, but I guess I was feeling a bit too confident that Lily wouldn't. She hadn't bothered them, that is until today & I caught her in the act of eating one. So Lily will get some training with the shock collar tomorrow. I was so mad at that dog that I beat her with the dead guinea. Of course it was one of my biggest ones too, grrrr.
Grrr. So sorry this happened. Is it possible Jasmine did the killing and Lily was just doing the eating?

Yesterday we had a scare DH had is chemo session shortly after starting he had severe abnominal pain. They ordered an Xray but nothing showed up so they ordered an emergency cat scan but thank God everything was okay he had a reaction to chemo he doc said he thinks its time to stop the chemo. They wanted to make sure he hadn't perforated his bowel talk about scared i was just thinking to myself how am going to take care of him and our kids.
Sorry to hear the chemo didn't go so well. Hopefully it will work out well for him to stop the chemo now.

Not crazy about lots of people tromping around here. Just got home, sister-in-laws house was broken into. They are not home, Ransacked the bedroom, but do not see anything missing, but I have not gone through her house taking note of what all is around either. Hopefully they can get home this week. What a mess!!!!
What an awful feeling. I had my garage burglarized a couple of years back and some items of value stolen - it is a really horrible feeling. Hopefully they can get home and do an inventory and get started on an insurance claim, but so sorry they are having to go through this.

Karen, I need to come over after this vacation & scrap my pics. I'm behind about 3 or 4 vacations now. I was doing really well for awhile & now with having the chickens I haven't gotten any scrapping done. Do you have a Cricut? I have one, but not the latest one & I haven't used it as much as I should be. I have cartridges out the wazoo for it.
I didn't know you are a scrapper too. I used to be really good about it and scrapbooked the first 5-8 years of my kids lives. Then I got behind but at least did the vacations. Now I haven't even done the last few vacations. I have one of the older Cricuts and a few cartridges for it but mostly lettering cartridges so I can make different page titles.

Danz, the multi got lost somehow but that is wild about you getting the Campine eggs so cheap. Maybe it makes up a little for misplacing the other more expensive eggs the other day.

Chicken danz- thank you, I did check leg and bottom of foot. No cuts, glass, thorns etc. leg itself is not tender until you touch that foot joint then she pulls back. It is painful to lay on so she is laying to one side. She still moves toes so maybe just a sprain? anything else I can give for inflamation I do not have any liquid children tylenol. Also how do you get any animal to take those poly vitamins they are kind of bitter goodness. I guess I can hide it in sweet potato, but would mashed sweet potato be ok for the 1 wk old chicks.

checoukan, how awful!

...

I never can get the multi quote to work right for me. KarenS, good luck with all of your company, I hope they enjoy seeing your birds.

Kansas Prairie, boy does Karen have a large craft room, it's enormous & really super nice, we're all envious that have seen it. Karen, I need to come over after this vacation & scrap my pics. I do have the cricut. I have the older and smaller one and the newer, larger one. I love that thing! That stuff is almost as addictive as chickens!

You've certainly had a rough day! Tomorrow has to be better.

Trish, I am so sorry that your dogs got your guinea. What the heck. My dogs just ignore them. That's insane. I think whopping her with the dead guinea was an excellent idea.

I hope so. I don't think the seller was happy. She wrote and explained what happened and said she had eggs available she could mail out. But then after I paid for them she wrote and it sounded like she was pretty unhappy. She has several rare breeds so I offered to big on some of her auctions to help make up for it. I didn't say I would buy per say but at least it could run her price up.

Maidenwolf if you drop a small amount of poly vitamins in their water add a little sugar as well. I often just open a beak and give them directly if I am treating just one bird though.
There are some vet type meds you can use but you probably don't have those around. Do you have any vet wrap you could wrap her ankle with for support? I got my children's acetaminophen from dollar general and it was pretty cheap. If Josie were on here she could tell you if anything else is safe. Absolutely no Ibuprofen though.
And if you want to give the vitamins in a sweet potato they certainly are good for the chicks. One of natures best bounties!!

Sorry. I would live to have a brain enough left by this time of day to figure out how to reply to everyone. I live getting a few minutes to myself to read and catch up!

Vitamin E sure saved my little Marans chick who lost her balance. She is acting just fine now.

I am so sad to read about Lucie, but relieved that she is doing so much better now. The car that hit her HAD to know they hit her, but maybe it scared them so much they did not know what to do. I would prefer to believe that over them being too heartless to try to help her. That's just how I tend to try to reframe things on a regular basis though, so that I can sleep at night. I hate reading the news too.....

I am so glad ChicknBaron gets to keep his flock a bit longer and that the ordinance might be changed! Good going!!!

Danz, your furniture looks amazing! I am impressed!!

Good luck with all the showing Hawkeye and Cheoukan! It sounds just like getting ready for a dog show! I miss that sometimes. Reading about your preparations, down to the whitening shampoo brought back fond memories :)

Josie, you will be a great mom! It really isn't any harder than being a caretaker for pets:) You are a responsible person, know how to research problems, weigh options and go with your gut. Works for kids too :) Yes, it brings bigger worries and frustrations at times, but the blessings are innumerable!

Right now my 14 yr old is trying my nerves by spreading herself so thin in all her activities, but she will figure out how to solve some things out on her own with help and guidance, I have no doubt. It just keeps her old mom worried:)

I am glad the bird that got caught in the bird netting is OK. Scary!!! I have two silkies who prefer to pile up outside rather than walk the ramp into their coop. I get scared they are hurt every time I go pick them up to put them in. They just go so limp!

Sorry to hear about the chemo reaction. I will keep your family in our prayers!

Loved reading about the chicks visiting the nursing home! I wonder how many of us BYCrs are in the human services fields? I bet the number is pretty high. Cool idea about the bottle rocket idea! Don't think my neighbors would agree tho :)

What a beautiful grand baby Tweety!!!

Ahh.... My brain is mush. Must hit the hay. Will share a pic of our newest egg though:) Its's the one on the bottom right. I think our wheaten ameracauna laid it:)

Hope everyone finishes the week strong!

Danz, yeah I just think they're attracted to the darned guineas because of all the noise they make. You know how crazy those darned birds are & they get out & first thing they do is start yelling at the top of their lungs. As long as I was outside the dogs seemed to be ignoring them fine, but it was after I came & was cooking lunch that they got that one. HEChicken, yeah it's possible that Jasmine got the bird & then Lily took it away & ate it, but Lily is the one that got red-handed eating the bird, so she got walloped with it. I have heard people say before that they beat their dogs with the thing they killed & it is somewhat of a deterrent in a way if you're getting beaten up with a dead bird. She is going to get taught a lesson tomorrow though for eating the bird, even if she didn't catch it first she did in fact eat it, so that deserves punishment too. I'm going to have to I think start taking away all of these wild rabbits they catch because now they seem to think whatever they catch they can eat. I was feeling like the shock collar had really worked & now feel like I'm back to square one. I can't let the guineas out to range unless the dog has the shock collar on it seems. I have two of them, but one needs to have the screw drilled out because I could never get that one out to put the batteries in & the company wouldn't stand behind their product when it was defective, so I ended up buying another one. It would be nice if I could just get a second collar for this receiver.

medawinks, you have some pretty eggs! I can't wait to see what color of eggs I get from my Wheaten & Blue Wheaten Ameraucana hens & my Cream Legbars too. The lavender Ameraucana hens lay a pretty sky blue egg & a more teal colored one & my EE hen lays either a light greenish egg or sometimes it's almost blue.
