Consolidated Kansas

Isn't it crazy? When it rains it pours.
You aint kiddin... But maybe something to make you smile, my little chicks are doing super and now are flying up out of the brooder box to great me. That little one I gave the vit E oil to is the most awrnry and my little half blind sweetheart is the biggest girl in the flock. So precious life is and they are growing so fast it is so sad and joyful to see them feather so quickly.

That's so sweet maidenwolf, how can we not love them.

Kansas Prairie, that was a great article/story. It's great that they allow them there.

Has anyone heard from ChickNBaron?

Hi. I haven't been online all day, but I have a little bit to get caught up now. The little chick was already passed before I was even finished getting ready for bed last night. Then this afternoon, the one with the terribly curled foot passed too. The little girls buried them in the backyard, I can't believe how hard they took it.

This morning, before I even got dressed we got thrown into a whirlwind. The boys went outside to do chores and decided that they would put a huge pumpkin into the loft of the barn, and then drop it out the window into the pig pen before they let them out. That way they wouldn't have to break it and they could enjoy watching the splat. So my 13 yo was in the loft and my 15 yo was lifting the biggest pumpkin above his head, it had to be over 30 lbs. The 13 yo didn't have a good grip, and my 15 yo tried to catch it and it went down and smashed the living daylights out of his finger as it slammed it against a metal shelf. His fingernail was misplaced barely hanging, skin torn, it was so gross and I wasn't even dressed yet. GRRRR. We rushed off to the dr, they let him come right in and it is broken and considered to be an open fracture because of the fingernail being so torn so they sent us to the hospital for IV antibiotics and he has to take antibiotics for 2 weeks. He will have to see an orthopedic on Friday.

I'm going to get caught up now on reading.

so sorry to hear about the chick loss and your son finger i hope it heals quickly

mommahen10,
Sorry about the accident! On a positive note.... I think those accidents are why country kids have a different way of thinking than city kids, experience is priceless and builds common sense.
Knowledge they will not forget anytime soon.
Scars and injuries are "cool".

It's going to be a busy, busy day. I hope everyone is able to get out and do what needs to be done with no issues today before a rainy thursday sets in

I love having any kids out here. Kids always seem to be more in tune to animals than adults. I remember one time when a family came with a bunch of kids. They were all ages and adopted or foster kids. There was one little girl who was very shy and quiet and stuck to herself. That was back when I had Chopper. I went in and got Chopper and she squatted down and just stroked him over and over. It was the sweetest thing I had ever seen. She never did talk but you could see she really bonded with that duck.
Mammahen tell your Dad I said Happy Birthday. I don't know about being sweet.... I must have had him fooled!!

It seems terribly quiet here. I hope every one is just busy and is okay.
I should be out doing some more work with the cold front coming in. DH had to go get a root canal so he was off today. When he gets home and takes a nap maybe he'll work on my old polish pen. He decided to make a frame work to divide it on the inside for me. I got the outside done and was going to build the inside much simpler but he jumped in and started working on it. I already put up divider in my old Serama pen but need to build a door, another pop door and divide the pen itself.
I need to build a better house for my Sebastopols as well. What they use now is kind of make shift. I need to either enclose it or start over so they have protection from the north wind.
I really hate all the work associated with fall.
Trish can I post my doves on the poultry swap site? They aren't pets and they aren't poultry per say. I need to get them sold.

I've been reading but have been rather busy recently. We leave to go get the horses in about 2 weeks. I am so excited!!!

Also, the 2" soffit vents came in the mail, and we got them installed in the duck house. We ended up putting 4 along the back (North) wall and two on the front (one in each door). So far, it seems to be helping keep the ammonia smell down. It is still noticeable when you open the door, but it smells more like a duck just pooped close to you when you're standing in the open that it does a horribly strong ammonia scent. I don't think I'll be able to do the deep bedding method that has been talked about on here, but I think i'll be okay if I keep up with cleaning the duck house. If I ever build another coop, I think I'll go through the time/expense to make it tall enough I can walk into it. The extra height would probably help considerably with the smell.

Danz- I agree, all the prep work for winter is exhausting. I am planning on getting alot done today so it is that much more out of the way. I have brooders to finish and these 3 week olds to move. I need to get more wire and fencing to build my grow out pen. I think I am going to use my straw shed for that since we are going into winter. Oh so much to do, so little energy to do it. I have lots to do to prep for any chicks coming in. It is a non stop adventure.
