One of my SLW chicks escaped today and now has a place on her back towards the side were the hip bone sticks up,, well the skin got pulled back. She wasnt bleeding when I found her so I cleaned it and put some neosporin on it and put her under her light. Is there anything I should do that I may be missing??????

Sounds like you did well Maidenwolf, as long as the other chickens don't start picking on her.
Karen congrats on your hatches. I have duck eggs going into the hatcher in 2 days. I almost dread it. I did some candling yesterday and was surprised at the large amount that are developing. Out of probably 80 eggs I think I only had 7 that weren't fertile. I have another couple dozen I need to put in there. Hopefully I will have a decent pay day in a few weeks with them. Looks like I'll have a box of quackers!
I still am doing nothing. I took some tylenol but it hasn't helped. I'm sitting here with a sweatshirt on and freezing. I don't have time for this.

I have chicks hatching! Five German New Hamps and 8 Aloha/Speckled Sussex and Aloha/New Hamp chicks. Fun!

Congrats on the chicks - hopefully they will turn out to be great candidates for the Aloha project!

HEChicken, I forgot to say way to go on kicking Cyrus' nasty butt. I hope this is the last of his nonsense. I got a Speckled Sussex roo that is already 2 years old, he's has much more white than my roos so I was happy to find him. The problem with him is that he wants to fight every other roo on the place! Big Red and Big Spotty have both squared off with him before I could get him rounded up and so I figured out pretty quickly he has to stay penned. I really like him, even though he's seemingly turned my other sweet roos into killers!

Well, I feel a bit bad because now every time he sees me coming, he gives a little cry of alarm and runs away. I don't want any animal to fear me - just respect me! Still, I guess it is better this way than for me to be constantly have to watch my back. Sorry your SS roo is messing with your established roos - but hope he throws some pretty chicks for you.

Thanks everyone, the chick is doing good. Those little trouble makers I'll tell you what.... Danz sorry you have not found relief hopefully a good night sleep will help you. HEChicken I have a roo I had to put in his place too, oh man he was nasty mainly to others only to me once. He is a bantam who thinks he is a big bad turkey as he follows them and hangs out under them all day long lol. poor guy got eh boot many times and now only has a fit every now and then.

KarenS, you will have to post some pics of the new chicks when they hatch, I love seeing what you guys are coming up with. I try to follow the Aloha thread & there are some pretty birds coming out of the project so far. I'm sure it will take awhile to get everything just right, but it looks like things are progressing though. I just love my Swedish Flower Hens, they're the sweetest & prettiest birds. I was looking at them today & I knew I had two roosters that are non-crested for sure, but now I'm wondering if I might have some young crested roos in there too, time will tell I guess. I have read that it takes the crested roos a little longer to look like roos. Since I have two age groups I have to wait for the younger ones to develop out more. That's funny about that Ameraucana pullet, some of them are pretty vocal I have noticed, especially the black ones. The lavender hens I have are pretty quiet, but both of the black roosters I have are pretty vocal. I also have an ornery Speckled Sussex rooster, he has had to have his butt kicked a few times & chased around the yard like Cyrus. He has been doing better behaving himself, but I try not to turn my back to him too much, I don't really trust him, especially if it's time to eat, he likes to jump me when he's hungry for his evening snack. You would think the silly boy would remember I'm the food person, but he just likes to be ornery. He is the one that paces back & forth most of the day just aggravating my big black Ameraucana in his pen. They jump at each other through the wire, silly boys, too much testosterone or whatever hormone roosters have.

I finally caught that naughty Amerauacana rooster that was loose in the garage this evening, whew! He gave me a run for my money for sure. They get pretty smart about where they can go & hide from you & you can't reach them. He kept getting up on my son's tool box sitting at the end of the rabbit hutches & then he would jump off behind them. There was no way I could get him then until he came back out. Well he sat there a minute too long this time & I grabbed a leg & got him. He griped at me all the way back out to the pen. I hope to find him another home soon because he's getting pretty good sized as if the lavender Orp/porcelain Isabel roo, I actually have two of those to re-home. Out of 5 lavender Orps & 4 lavender Orp/porcelain Isabel chicks I ended up with only one pullet, go figure, & she is the orp/isabel cross as is the roo I kept for the general laying flock to be my second roo after my breeder coop is done & Speckie goes there. He won't be happy at all out there because he won't be able to aggravate Big Blackie all day long, ha.

I got some really bad news this morning from my son about his girlfriend Dana. He said the Drs told them at the last appt. the other day that the tumor has grown back already & is bigger than before they removed it, it's really fast growing & aggressive, & they think it has already spread to her brain. They also did find a tumor in her lung. The prognosis is very poor for her & it's so very sad, she is only in her early 30s. My son is pretty much beside himself & it just breaks my heart for both of them. He called me this morning to ask my advice on supporting her since I have already been through this with my late husband. I told him I didn't have any magic pill or magical advice, just to be supportive, be there for her, & listen. I also told him no matter how much he is coming apart inside he has to be the strong one for her because I know she is terrified, who wouldn't be. So they both need your prayers to make it through this. I have cried off & on all day every time I think about it. Dana is the sweetest girl & I had hoped they could get married, she has made my son very happy to this point. He said today that he isn't one to whine about life not being fair, but this sucks & I agree.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZZY!!!!! OMGOSH! That looks huge. I hope you can find a way to haul those things to the metal recycle place, you could get a nice little chunk of change.
Danz, that would make me so mad. Can you report it? Is your chick doing any better? You must have caught something, I hope you feel better soon. I hope you can sell your ducklings as soon as you like. I never thought about selling them this time of year but I'm selling young pullets and I got another call yesterday.

maidenwolf, I think you're doing everything you can with your chick. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this.

Well, I went outside to give my one brooder pen that's done one more coat of paint. Of course, I had to stop and check on all my chicks. Those naughty little EEs, they spilled their water. I don't know how they got it tipped, it had to be heavy and I'm glad they didn't get hurt. I cleaned up their pen, they can't be wet and cold. Then as I was in the cleaning mode, I raked out all of the pens. Since I had the rake in my hands, I raked under the decks and started raking up sticks and forgot all about my paint. DUH! Anyway, the yard looks much better, the chickens look happy, and I did go ahead and paint too after removing the dry layer from the top of the paint. At least it was warm in there because I left the lights on and a space heater while I was working. I'm freezing now but I wasn't freezing while I was working.

X2. Sounds like a mess!

Oh - the latest on Cyrus....for three weeks, he behaved pretty well. The technique of staring him down until he walked away worked pretty well, though it was a little time-consuming. We got it to where I would only have to stand still for 10 seconds or so, but still, when you're trying to get around and get chores done, more than once I found myself sighing and telling him "Really, Cyrus, now?" Still, I felt it was worth it to have a rooster who is excellent for the reasons I got him AND have him not attacking me.

That ended yesterday when he ran after me and slammed into my legs. He still doesn't have spurs so its only the weight of his body against me and this time of year when I'm wearing full length pants, even that wasn't a big deal. I turned around and got a boot in his rear end and flicked him back. He hit the fence, slid down and came at me again. I repeated. Then I started to chase after him, getting my boot on him several more times. After the boot had made contact with his rear end a half dozen times, he gave up and started running from me. I literally chased him all around the yard. So you'd think he'd have learned his lesson for awhile, right? Nope. A half-hour later when I returned to the chicken yard, he had apparently forgotten all about it and came at me again. So we did it all over again. THAT time, he learned his lesson. Ever since then he has not only kept his distance from me, but runs as soon as I walk in his direction!!! I have to say, this is really a first. All of the things I've tried in the past have only backed him off to where he mutters under his breath about the intruder, but not to where he seriously doesn't want to mess with me any more. I must admit, I had to smile briefly in victory this morning when I saw him running away from me. As long as he doesn't lose confidence in his role as flock protector as a result of this, I will be one happy camper.

Oh, and speaking of spurs, I have a hen with spurs! I've heard of this but never had one before. My Aloha hen hasn't developed the actual claw part of the spur yet but has grown the spur out quite long from the back of her leg - it looks about the same stage of development as Cyrus' spurs.

I didn't know hens could get spurs. I'm glad none of mine do!

I'm sorry Cyrus has been such a pain; I hope he's learned his lesson for good.

At 7 o'clock this morning, the weather service website said it was 25. However, we are in a deep valley and regularly get cooler than the weather office does, so I"m betting we were lower than that. I had a nice, thick layer of ice o n everything this morning, including my duck pool. This is the first time the duck pool has frozen. I guess it's time to get a move-on on getting things ready for winter... I still need to buy the supplies to make a couple cookie-tin heaters... I ruined a water bucket (ice cream bucket) this morning trying to get the ice out of it... GRRR! I g uess it's time to go to dollar general and get some nicer buckets too...

I am pretty sore this morning. Thursday was my birthday, and I spent the evening out trying to clear debris out of the pasture (to be fair, my DH took me out the evening before because he had to work the graveyard shift on my b-day). One of the things I moved was a radiator that came out of an old vehicle - back when they made vehicles/radiators STOUT! That radiator probably weighed as much as I do. I tried dragging it across the pasture, but that didn't work very well. So, I ended up rolling it instead. We've been trying to avoid driving in the pasture because we have VERY little grass and don't want to flatten what we do have. So, I moved the radiator all the way across our pasture (the short way - probably 200-300 yards). My husband had been sleeping in preparation for his shift at work, but got up and came to help just as I was dragging the radiator underneath the fence - only feet from the truck.



Then, after that, we worked together on rolling this old water tank thing across the pasture. The problem was that it was bigger on one side than the other so, of course, it wouldn't roll straight. We had to roll it a ways, twist it to straighten it up, and go again. That thing was heavy enough that my husband and I together couldn't even stand it upright. We got it to within 20 or 30 yards of the fence before we couldn't budge it any more. We'd worn ourselves out moving it and decided to just come back later to try again. The guy from the local metal recycling place is supposed to come tomorrow to pick it up, so let's hope we can get it out of the pasture by then.


The good news in all of this is that we are one step closer to being ready to bring my horses out here. We've got less than 2 weeks before we leave! I am so excited! I've been waiting for this for YEARS!!! The only things we have left to do are to 1) line the inside wall of the barn with plywood so the horses are less likely to be able to kick through the metal siding 2) finish the fence around the barn and create a "corral" to lock the horses in that first night. 3) Fill in LOTS of holes. My in-laws are considering coming to help us finish this stuff up next weekend. That would be really nice! As weird as it sounds, I hope it stays cool while we finish this... I REALLY don't want to have to worry about snakes while I'm spending lots of quality time in the pasture filling holes.. AS it is, I was picking wire up yesterday and found some 1"x2" welded wire that was folded multiple times like a piece of paper. I picked it up, and there was a snake skin woven in the bottom layer of wire. It freaked me out and made me really glad it was only about 30 degrees at the time.

That was my niece's duck; he's a cutie. I guess this morning there were some icebergs in their pool. One was scared of them and flailed around trying to jump out and one wouldn't even get in!
