MichelleM-- that is fantastic news about your DH!! I'm so glad his scans are looking better! I hope he continues to go in that direction and can beat the pants out of that cancer!

Hawkeye, congrats again on your wins with your birds & the new one! You really have some pretty ones! I just don't think I could do the show thing, it's just way too much work for me & my DH wouldn't like me having to travel to shows. I wouldn't mind just going to one some time if I ever get the chance, but I don't know when that will be. It seems like now that I have all of these birds & animals it's really hard to get away, but I enjoy them so much, they make me happy.

I went to Wichita yesterday & needed to go to Petco for some food & saw a display with tags for the dogs, so I got two of them & they had a machine where you engraved them right there, it was so cool. I got their names on one side & our name & my cell number on the other, so now the two GPs have tags to identify who they belong to at least. We wanted them to have them so when they show up at someone's door like they did the other night they could just look at the tag & know immediately where they belong. My neighbor on the corner just happened to decide to check with me to see if Jasmine was mine when she showed up there. Fortunately we do know all of the people right close to us on this road, but down the hill on the other road is a different story. I do know one person down there that lives right directly in front of our property down there, but I don't know all of the other people because some have changed ownership & there are some renters down there. I don't know the person who has the goats though, so yes I suppose I should go meet them if I have time this week & let them know the dogs won't hurt their goats & what they're for. They were here last night, at least if I can hear them barking out there I know they're here, but some mornings they come back absolutely muddy & wet & there is a bog down that way & I'm sure they have water out for the goats & all & if there is water anywhere these dogs will get in it they love water. They don't care if it's muddy water either. The strange thing about the GPs fur though is that they can be a muddy mess & when they dry out it seems to just fall off & they look like they were never muddy again.

I let my turkeys out for awhile this morning & that tom turkey us the funniest thing, he struts around & shows off like crazy. They were outside of the hoop coop when I was trying to let the oldest guineas out & they were afraid of him. I had to get them to go away from the door before the guineas would come out.

The roof is going up on the breeder coop now, I can't wait for it to be done so I can take some pics.

Danz, I'm sorry about your pig, it sounds like there was something wrong with him from the beginning. I hope you have better luck with the next one. I would like to raise one some time again, that was the best pork I ever had the year we raised that pig.

Trish, that's great that you got the tags on the collars! I've seen that machine in there at Petsmart. I bought my dog tags off of some cute little site that makes rhinestone ones that they engrave on. But my dogs rarely go out-- and only for one reason. hehehee! I'm not sure how functional mine are if they were to spend a lot of time outside. Anyway, I think you'd love to go to a show just to hang out and see the sale section. It's a great place to meet other breeders in breeds that you are interested in. I met so many club members! But I understand what you're saying and you're right, it's one more thing to take up your time and stress over. I've been into showing since I was a kid-- if it wasn't showing my dad's Polish, it was showing my horses! Seems like I've sort of been raised into showing and have that kind of mentality, and I find it really fun! Yay on the roof going up! It's a great day out there today! I'm still sore, so I've been hanging around here being a complete lazy person.

After I put Nu Stock on the other chickens leave it alone and stop picking at it, some times that's why I put it on. Maybe I'm just lucky, let me ask over on the Old Timer's thread they use it, they'll know.

They are a great group, they are old, blunt, most have been raising chickens for well over 20 years, they don't care for doll house coops, chickens as pets, and those who attempt to raise chickens in their basement, and several of them consider Silkies Toilet Paper. Yeesh! That is down right insulting and rude that they have that attitude towards cute coops, bantams and silkies. I wonder what makes them feel so far superior to the rest of us. I have never even heard of that thread, but if they feel the need to belittle others for their tastes in poultry and housing, then I don't have much respect for people like that. It's called being a bully and having a low tolerance and you don't make friends that way. I personally love and respect all breeds of poultry. Can't think of anything I don't like and I certainly would not judge a person by their coop or breed of birds they have.

I guess I wouldn't fit in there. I've been raising chickens for many years if you include a stint back 40 years ago and the present. I probably have as many chickens as any of them could think of but I do love doll house coops --(can't afford them for myself), I love pet chickens, and I have raised chickens in my basement and every other room in the house. I like learning but I don't like KIA kind of people.
I use pine tar for wounds that I want to protect from picking. It is nasty stuff and the chickens know it. But it works wonderfully.

Agreed! I really get annoyed with intolerant people who act like bullies. Ridiculous!! Lately, I've had my share of that type and am sick to death of it. We have the most awesome group here-- so welcoming and accepting! Whew!!!!

Yes, it is a PITA, especially if you've rearranged your schedule to accomodate them.

It's not really a girls night thing; they're friends from college who are also now DH's friends, and his sister often joins us for this though we see her plenty often. You all gave me the what-for last time for putting myself last and it really stuck! I've also pushed my family to have their events on our already scheduled Tuesday night family nights instead of sucking up weekend time. Family night is more than often enough to spend with my family. It started when my niece and nephew were little and it was often the only time most of us got to spend with one or both of them. Now my nephew is in college and works, though he often does show up, and my niece is in high school and often has something else going on. It will probably die out when she graduates and goes somewhere out of town to college. Am I evil for hoping it does?

It's not like I don't see and talk to my parents frequently anyway,...

I don't know what's gotten into my chickens, but they've been getting their laying done early lately. They're finally getting finished with the molting and we're getting 3-5 eggs a day now.

Congrats on getting more eggs I am getting 1-2 a day hope it picks up but I am proud of them for only started to lay on oct 15th and have gotten 15 eggs all together..

Oh I see, but is there anything in it to stop the other birds from pecking at the wound? The reason for using Blu-Kote is to promote healing (as I understand it the Gentian Violet does contain healing properties) but also stop the other birds from pecking at the wound, allowing the injured bird to remain with the flock. It sounds like the Nu Stock promotes healing but the bird would still have to be separated until the wound is closed over?

Maybe I will get both. I use alot of herbal treatments on myself and my animals and I love lavender for its many uses for wounds it has an unlimited amount of uses.

Nu Stock is for skin related ailments. Anything wrong with their skin, cuts, burns, swelling, soreness, scale mites, promotes rapid healing. It's for horses, dogs, cattle too. I wouldn't use it on a cat or where a dog could lick it.

I only bring this story up to say Nu Stock is what they use to help their roosters heal. The story is that some were purchasing the nu stock over in NE. Oklahoma and talking about how great Nu Stock was for healing up their fighting roosters and an off duty officer was there as a customer...they were busted soon after. Okay, enough about that! BYC will lock up this thread if get we comment on that subject.

Husband has some high powered German short hairs for bird hunting, we've used it on them. Horses for anything with their skin, it promotes healing and hair growth. Cattle after dehorning & after castrating.

I wonder if I can use it on my husband's head for promoting hair growth?

SO my tom turkeys are fighting like its life or death and I noticed my hen submitting near them and rubbing on them and doing a dance around them, could she be going to lay and egg for fall??????

Good idea. Every dog I've ever had, has had a tag put on first thing with our phone number and it has helped a couple of times. The first time was with our old dog, Rex. He went to work with DH every day since he was good at the office, and at lunch, DH and I would meet downtown (walking distance for both of us) to give Rex a chance to relieve himself. Well, one day we had just parted after lunch, and I was almost back to my office when my cell phone rang and someone said he had Rex. I was really confused because DH and I had parted only minutes before and Rex was right there with him. Well, it turns out, they took the elevator up to DH's floor and he got out, fumbling for his keys. Rex normally ran out with him and beat him to the office door but this day I guess he just decided to stay on the elevator and see where else it goes. So it went up one floor and the doors opened and you can imagine the guy's surprise to find the only occupant was a dog!!! He called me, I called DH, end of story.

The second time I was glad for the tag was earlier this year in the infamous case of Sammie jumping out the car window. After holing up for 3 days to get over the shock of landing on the road, she approached a woman at a church, who called me.

In both instances, I really wonder what would have happened if the dogs hadn't had tags with my phone number on them.

Yeah, that thread has been shut down in the past for clean up because the "contributors" got all hot and bothered over expressing their opinions and it got ugly. After the last time, the mods warned that if they had to shut it down again, they wouldn't be cleaning it up - it would just be shut down for good. I used to read it because there is a lot of wisdom out there but after that last incident I quit reading it. I come on here for relaxation - not drama - and I don't care for that kind of stuff.

I've heard of pine tar - never used it. I will have to try it sometime.

Hmmmm....let us know? This is your first year with the turkeys too, right? I've figured neither my ducks nor my turkeys will lay until Spring so at this point it would only be a nice surprise if they did, but not a disappointment if they don't.

I was not expecting any till spring because normally (not always) they are seasonal layers so her actions have surprised me. Within a weeks time she has gone from a "DONT TOUCH ME" bird to a "well why are you NOT touching me" type of bird.. Now the submitting and dancing. This is my first year with turkeys I hav learned LOTS from people on here, thankfully lol. I will keep everyone posted..

Maidenwolf, how old are your turkeys? Mine hatched the 3rd week of July, it's my first adventure with turkeys. You've probably said before but I don't remember, I tried to go back and see but gave up on that. When hot flashes started my memory comes and goes.

I have three bourbon reds two are displaying and are kinda spitting and stomping, they stand beside each other facing opposite directions.


I enjoy this thread, and I'm very happy to have found it! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming on this thread. I've learned from some of the other threads, there are good people on all of them. It does seem like some threads have a bully who kinda makes for a negative environment. Some threads I don't have much in common. This KANSAS thread is awesome!

My turkeys were born on may, they have been fighting and displaying and spitting and drumming for quite some time now.
I agree this thread is the best so far, I dtopped posting questons in other threads I only ask here.

OH, and I wanted to post pictures of my new blacks that I got. The breeder I got them from does ONLY black X black breedings. That means they are "clear" and have no splits in their background (like to lavender, paint, or whatever else people are doing to blacks now). They are HARD to come by. And they are costly when you do. She never sells eggs or chicks, only started birds or adult birds. So I think the boy is about a year old and the girl is only a few months old-- still a pullet, not laying yet. SO excited!! I'm now into blacks, which is something I've wanted to be in for a while now, and it's never worked out.

I had to show a large picture of the boy-- he is so impressive-- he has NO back on him! His hackles and tail touch and he has incredible type. I'm in loooooove!

they are nice birds. I want to get some one day
