Consolidated Kansas

Good luck Hawkeye and Checoukan on your bird show. Hope you both win!
Sad that I have to retype what I just wrote. I just cant seem to complete a post as its either too big or not compatable with my puter.
Guess there will be no rabbit and chicken as "Mrs Bunny Galore" didnt have her kits which were due a day ago. As to chickens I have people lined up to take them and I am glad, as its so tough to kill a hen that old and a pet that long. Tough is an understatement as one hen is at least 10 years old and was in the first batch I ever got. She seems as healthy as a mule and I tear up just thinking about catching her up and delivering her to my friends from Kenya. The others not so much. They have had a healty life and I would say fun life. Better than passing them on at a swap or auction where they will be passed again and again in some cases.
Well, in other news; the recycle guys came by today. Father and son: take junk metal. From a tried and true home bread horder I have to say I really feel liberated. Fridge, washer, microwave, and several med cabenets. There on there way now to recycle that and then back for more. First the deck then the barn. With the space created and the old hens gone I feel I can actually now get the black coppers I want to order in the spring. I even have space in the barn to house the heffers I want. Hard to liquidate but eaiser to collect!
Sorry about your rabbit, Mike. Thank goodness I've resisted getting rabbits and quail. I would never get anything done. I'm with you on the hens. I just can't butcher a hen. They give so much. I sell my roosters as breeders or meat. I usually don't care which. I did actually donate one special rooster today and it was hard to do. The promise was that it would not be butchered and not be sold to any one else to butcher. It was a precious pet and probably the best yard rooster I had for protecting the ladies. I just didn't want him to produce any mixed chicks when I am trying to keep my breeds separated. I always let the birds free range but when I get all their pens and housing separate I will only let one breed out a day.
But yeah the hens are special. Maybe you should just keep the one old girl around until she passes. Just one bird won't eat that much.
I should have some black coppers in the spring I could sell you assuming nothing happens to this huge batch of chicks I have. Like anyone on here I try to sell at better prices than I do to the general public because I know the birds will have better care. So if you want count on saving some $$ for some really nice birds.
I have a huge metal pile and a ton more of stuff I need to move myself. I've been trying to get it organized to cash in without loosing the profit of someone coming to get it. In the meantime it's an eye sore. I do go digging through the pile quite often for this or that that I can use for some project. I have been known to repurpose just about anything.
In my own little world of hoarding I have tons of stuff I would like to sell as well but to actually do it is something I never get done. When I make those rare attempts to clean house I think how much easier it would be if there wasn't so much stuff to clean around.
I've had one crazy day and just got in the house after dark when I finally got the feeding and water done. I got my new white peahen (traded her for 10 cochin hens), sold a bunch of fancy boys, some more girls, and my black mutant pheasants. I really felt like I was giving up a lot of special birds today. I was very attached to some of these. But the owl had picked them off one by one so I was lucky to even have these left. I had to go out and gather eggs and rush eggs in to the restaurant today. I had hoped to wait until Monday. They are going to be open Monday but gone the rest of the week. Maybe that will give me a chance to get caught up on some of my egg orders and have enough to do my own Thanksgiving baking.
Hawkeye I'll probably go get my new purple pied peacock after this coming week. I just don't think I'll have time to do it before that. I am excited about him though. I was going to raise the netting on the melanistic pheasant pen and put my Lady Amhurst pheasants in there but have decided now I am going to put the new boy and girl in there instead.
I ended up selling two of my lavender orpington boys and my Salmon Faverolle rooster that I hadn't planned on yet. I wasn't really ready to choose which lavender boys I wanted to sell but I decided I have to give some of them up before I feed them for several more months. I made sure to keep the biggest one so far of the group just in case he turns out to be the biggest. Size sells.
That means my salmon girls are without a boyfriend right now. I am going to have to get my back porch boy Sam interested in the girls. I really hate to pen him with them. He is such a spoiled little free spirit. I guess once he decides they are all his he won't mind.
And then later today I figured out one of my buff orpington hens isn't a hen at all. This guy looks and always has looked like a rooster. But he had never ever crowed. And I have seen him sitting on eggs before on more than one occasion. Seriously. So I thought maybe he just was a masculine looking girl. Well finally I saw him mount a hen this evening. I have mixed feelings about that. Now I can have pure buff orpington babies but I had decided I was going to split my buffs to lemon cuckoos. So now the plans change again.

Must be nice to be a business owner and actually have employees! I've done bookwork for a company before, so I know what kind of money has to go out. If you provide a benefit package for them it goes even higher. In addition, I have seen the figures from Wolf Creek in the annual report every year and the cost per employee for all those things virtually doubles most unskilled labor people's salary. And even they made a healthy $ per hour income for no where Kansas.
It's like I said: I would think the bakery workers would have been smarter to take a cut in their pension and keep their job and benefits than be without a job at all. Pension is a benefit and the company is providing that benefit, so it wouldn't actually be coming from their pockets. And in reality, it is a joke I am learning. By the time you pay your insurance cost and such out of it you end up with nothing to speak of anyway.
I know of a couple of companies that were also in the Emporia area who would suddenly have layoffs and lay off employees just months before their 20 years was up that it took to be vested for a pension. Dirty dealings for sure. Kansas and Florida are the only two right to work states which allow employers to just lay someone off for no reason without being in violation of the law. So consequently they can get by with doing things like that that is unlawful in most states.

I got the new Meyer Hatchery catalog today, I haven't got to check it out yet, but I did thumb through it and the pictures are so much better than they were a few years ago. It opened up to Exchequer Leghorn with an order limit of 2? Also saw Blue Copper Maran chicks are $20...WOW!! i can't wait to look at the whole catalog, I love hatchery catalogs I always learn from reading them. It's better than the toy catalogs.

I guess I am going the right direction then breeding blue coppers! I agree KP! The problem is I want them all. That is why I am broke today!!! Maybe they should have a Christmas Chicken catalog for people like us!
PrairieC, that is cute. I like any thing chicken.

Welcome to the party!

I got some holiday planning done today, and a load of laundry. That's it. Whatever motivates me to get things done was just missing today.

I just wanted to share something with you guys that I just put together. I got a coupon for 50% off my next mug purchase, so I designed a travel mug with all of my favorite chickies on it. ^_^ http://www.zazzle.com/my_flock_2012-168314765055776869

Cool!
