Ended Contest #4 Short Story Fiction Contest - 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong

In the beginning was white and darkness. Then there was a heat beat, beating at a slow steady rhythm like a drum. Slowly announcing life, the beat of life. Then the was eyes, large huge eyes that saw, now we could see our white, dim world. Then there was a brain to process the world and we thought that this was it. But we needed air so a beak and lungs formed and there was a air bubble. Now we must be done we thought. But legs and wings formed and we thought, why do we need these? They simply take up room! And then feathers came and we were hot and uncomfortable. Why need this when we were warm before? But then one day it got all too much and we broke our world. White fragments flew everywhere and we blinked. The world was fuzzy and full of color. As our eyes adjusted we knew why we had feathers and we realized why we had legs and wings. We felt straw and feathers and we looked up at our mother, she looked down on us and said "You are my first chick, born on Easter Day so I will name you Easter." I snuggled up next to my mother, now I knew I was a chicken and I was ready to concur the life before me.
That was three years ago and even now I look back on that day with pride. The same pride still stays with me while I stand on the tallest perch, being highest in pecking order. And now I remember those days in the egg as I lift my head and welcome the rising sun, a new day means new chicks.

The Miracle Easter Chicks Once upon a time there was a sweet little old lady who live in the Arizona desert . She live on a little acre lot of sand in a big double wide trailer house complete fenced with a sex foot chain link fence.. She love her little piece land and made a nice home. This little lady planted a nice garden to grow her vegetables . She planted lots of colorful flowers to brighten up the her home against the desert sand and the beautiful sunsets. But something was missing. Someone had started a chicken coop on the side of the house. It was in need of repair badly. She worked so hard repairing the coop, and a large predator proof run attached to it so the coyotes and bobcats could not get in to eat them. She painted beautiful pictures on the coop to welcome her new hens when she got them. She had always had chickens and was looking forward to the joys of owning some soon. When the coop was finished she went looking for four nice big yellow hens. Yellow hens were her favorite of all chickens. She was looking on craigslist one morning while drinking coffee. Saw a ad FOUR Puff laying hens $20. EACH . All laying pretty pinkish tan eggs. She though boy hen prices ns have really rose since the last time I bought hens. But if I bought chicks it be along time before I'd get any eggs. So she decided the hens would be the best choice. She jumped into her pick up truck to go purchase the 4 yellow hens. They beautiful fat fluffy yellow hens she purchased all 4 of them. When she arrive back home and release the hens into the chicken coop those hens went to singing and scratching for bugs right away. The chickens thought they were in paradise. All the food they wanted, bug to eat, shade from the hot sun, cool water all day. They thought they died and went to Paradise. The sweet little old lady watched her Hens for awhile, she thought they need names. She gave them all little girls names. Sally was very friendly, shorter and wider than the other hens. Mary was more stand offish, taller and leaner. Jane and Patty were buddies stayed close to each other most the time.. The sweet little old lady. Even painted their name on each nest box. In big bright letters SALLY, JANE MARY AND PATTY with pretty little flowers to make it more homey for the girls. The very next morning the sweet little old lady had to fresh eggs waiting for her to collect for breakfast. The hens were singing they were so happy.. This went on daily for along time. One` morning the sweet little old lady went out to collect egg and only Jane, Patty, and Mary came out to eat. The sweet little old lady was worried about Sally. Went in the coop found Sally under a bush, Sally just made the awful noise as the sweet little old lady approached her. Sally fluffed her feather all up like saying leave me alone! Sally had been hiding her eggs. She want to hatch them. Of course they weren't fertile as the sweet little old lady didn't own a rooster. The sweet little old lady got to thinking. It is close to Easter if I can find some fertile I could hatch Easter chicks. Wouldn't that be fun! Onto craigslist she went again calling all the people selling chickens looking for fertile eggs Any kind of eggs Sally didn't care.! There was only six ads that day for chickens. Most of them didn't have roosters because of there non loving chicken neighbors. On the last call a nice lady had a mixed flock of laying hens with roosters. She was glad to sell the sweet little lady a dozen fertile eggs. The sweet little old lady was on her way to get eggs. Only $4. dozen. To her surprise the eggs were all different colors, shades of blue, green, pinkish white and brown. The seller Asked the sweet old lady to let her know how the hatch went. After getting home the sweet little old lady got the calendar down to count days until Easter . She could set the eggs in two days for Easter chicks. The sweet little old lady went out after dark and took the un-fertile eggs and replaced them with the fertile colorful eggs and the waiting began. Time passed by quickly it seemed. The sweet little old lady was out feeding the hens early the day before Easter she head peeping in the coop. Sally had Hatched out six of the eggs already sporting them around the coop so proudly. The sweet little old lady went in the coop to collect fresh eggs for breakfast and to see the chicks. The chicks were all different colors and just as fluffy healthy babies. The sweet little old lady removed the old unhatched eggs that didn't hatch putting them in her apron pocket not wanting to mix the old and new eggs. As the sweet little old lady left the coop she removed her apron and hung it on a fence post so she could dispose of the bad eggs away later. The next morning she went out to collect Easter breakfast eggs. The sweet little old lady heard a chicks peeping and peeping. She figured a chick or chicks got out of the coop and were hiding. She went in the coop threw some scratch down for Sally and the chicks all six were there. So where was the peeping coming from? As the sweet little old lady walked by her apron hanging on the post she heard the peeping. She looked in her pocket and all six eggs hatched out in the hot desert sun to her amazement. They seemed healthy and happy on Easter morning!! That evening she slipped them under Old Sally. Who raised all twelve chicks with no problem. And the sweet little old lady was over run with chickens. I think you call it chicken Math. THE END PS. the part about the chicks hatching in the apron is true!!!!!!
