I vote for 3 for most contests.
Guessing type contests or random draw...I'd vote for just 1.

3 for most contests sounds right to me as well. Though, I voted for 2, because the only contest I've actually participated in was 'bingo' and it was fun, and more fun if there were a consolation prize.

Off topic but too many contests at the same time is not a good thing.

What are "too many" contests for you? This may vary for everyone but I'm curious. (sorry if this derails the point of your post Kathy, lol)

From my own experience hosting contests and chatting with winners I had already privately decided that 3 prizes is my favorite, especially for judged contests.

For random winner contests, I feel like 1-5 is fine.
Note: Coming in fifth place when the contest is judged might actually feel like a slap in the face even if your entry won over 100s of others, lol, this was a late observation on my part but there are none of those feelings when it's random drawing winners.

I also think that depending on what the prizes actually are will make a difference as to how many prizes there need to be. A big prize might only need 1 prize and it would still be exciting to play for a chance to win. Smaller prizes would definitely need more to want to participate though.

Just my thoughts but 3 is of course the most comfortable number in most cases.
