The above pic was taken before I moved to Buffalo, when I visited the tropical aviary at the Central Park Zoo in NYC. It's kinda far away, but what you see is a pair of golden conures (Guaruba guarouba). They are beautiful, friendly, noisy, expensive, and prone to feather picking if not given a stimulating and social environment. They might be about the most expensive conure you can find (except perhaps for some really rare mutations, or species virtually unknown in captivity). If you google the species, you can find out more. I also saw them closer-up at Parrots of the World in Rockville Centre on Long Island. Very beautiful, but extreme conures in every way.

I have a 15 year old Green-Cheeked conure named Cody...had her since she was weaned. Thought for about 8 years that she was a boy, then she laid an egg. Slightly traumatizing, but it worked out.

I love her dearly. She can be annoyingly loud when she wants to be with me, but most of the time she's very quiet. She loves to ride around with me, take naps, eat my breakfast....you know.

She's also very much bonded to me and my mom. She hates just about everyone else. I think if I'd been better about having other people handle her when she was young, that wouldn't be so much the case, but maybe it's a girl thing, too.

My new baby, around 3 months old Sun Conure. I just brought him/her home on Tuesday.

Sonny...

Need some links for toys and maybe even a 'bed' for him. Any one know of good ones.

Sonny is just beautiful! Congratulations!

I made a bed for Cody by just sewing a rectangle of felt-like fabric into a tube...the fabric was maybe 6" by 12"?? And then I threaded a shoelace through it and dangled it from the top or side of the cage. Voila! Instant hammock! She loves climbing inside at night, or chewing on it during the day...silly bird!

Her favorite toys are bells and anything that she can "preen" -- she currently has a toy that looks like a rag mop that she loves to chew on. My 'tiels like wooden toys that they can chew.

I got the ragmop toy and some others (including her big aviary cage that she shares with the 'tiels) from a place called Birds Comfort. I've had great experience dealing with them and their toys (and cages!) are quite reasonably priced.

Enjoy your new conure!

Sassy Ann's favorite toy is rope. Simple rope. She really likes those 97 cent rope knot toys for dogs at Walmart. The ones with a knot on each end. They are strong enough for her to swing around on, thick enough for hours of enjoyment of unraveling the braided center, and provided months of safe brooding when she was convinced the rope was her nest. Most of the time I buy bulk sisal rope and make my own toys, but Sassy Ann is fond of her twin bells. And yes, expect to wear ear plugs when she expresses her happiness or unhappiness.
