Conventional non-GMO Whole Grain/Seed Recipe for Layers

I'll have to get the specifics tomorrow as things are hectic around here right now.

If I don't get back in the next day or 2 please excuse... My elderly dad has taken a "turn for the worse" and we're not sure what to expect in the next couple days.

I just want to be sure I'm giving you the right specific info and I'll have to dig it up :D

Gotta tell you dandelionness, this is a fabulous thread. JUST what I was needing. I'm planning on getting into the upscale egg laying business and the best I have been able to find for organic feeds is $29 + tax locally. Or buy from Azure. I live 20 miles east of Shreveport La. and it's hot here in the summer. But I have them under the shade trees and they are comfortable with fans and ice occasionally. Babying them. :D Just ordering the ISA Brown's this next month so laying will begin in about 5 months. I'd much prefer to make my own. I like to soak oats and ferment grains along with the grower I have my good White Plymouth Rocks on. I try to keep it about 18%. Since it's coming up breeding time I'm going to do like Ozexpat does and add 5 selemium tablets to about 100 kg feed. Good info on that.

Wow, Linda! We only have like 2 weeks out of the year here - okay, maybe a month - where we need to worry about heat!! I think poultry up north where we can't range several months out of the year (for greens and bugs anyway, they still enjoy the time outside) it's more important to provide the nutrients and crude protein up to a certain percentage because they can't supplement on their own. But when it's really hot there are you running into the same problem as we do in the deep cold - that is, does excessive summer heat make the bug population and growing things outside go dormant or become slower growing?

Can you post a link about Ozexpat and selenium?? And I wonder if fish meal would have some selenium in it already? I suppose I could call the guy at my feed mill, but I would have to disguise my voice because I think he recognizes the crazy chicken lady who calls in with the weird questions! ;)

I've been thinking about reducing my sunflower percentage down to 30% by weight, then adding fishmeal and more brewer's yeast until 18% crude protein is achieved (and within their respective limits), but I don't know if my husband could handle the smell, poor guy. I suppose the easy answer to that problem is an airtight container for the fishmeal, right??

No problem - we all have life outside of BYC, right?

I've been thinking of your situation often and praying for you. All the best.

Does the premix you are using not have selenium in it ?

Hi, Matt -

I will have to check the label - I was reading a little about selenium last night and found a bunch of information on selenium toxicity in livestock. So I think it's a good idea to check all your totals and compare them to the recommendations.

I'd still like to see that link to see why they'd be supplementing - maybe it's a regional thing?
