Conversations with Coons

Afraid of some raccoons... :lau

Maybe you're all just old fashioned country boys or something, but if there is no reason to kill, I don't see the point. I walked right up to this raccoon and all he did was look at me. Smacked him with a broom and he ran up a tree and then when he saw my 16lb dog, he crawled tree to tree and dove over the back fence as fast as he could. He hasn't been back. People keep these things as pets and I see them sharing food with the neighbor's cats. Calm down lmao!
99% of heathy raccoons will run from you. Just the sound of the door opening would probably scare off most of them. I’m not saying you should be afraid of them I’m saying they will kill your chickens. Their feces isn’t good to have in your yard for people or your chickens. I’m guessing you haven’t had chickens very long. Most people like you make statements like this out of ignorance. It’s not your fault it’s just the way people have become nowadays. You have the internet so you know so much. It’s funny though because a lot of people with your mindset don’t come back often. My guess is your chickens will be killed all in one night or one or two will be beheaded. Another bird might get chomped on and you’ll sprinkle pixie dust on it then she’ll die. Eventually you’ll lose them all and you won’t come back and admit you were wrong.

Right now I have my 6th skunk in my trap. To be dispatched later. The cycle is never ending and I put the majority of the blame on my neighbors (love them as people) they feed cats outside there are so many!! People think that this area is the place to dump cats....awh lookie’ they get food so here’s a perfect place. The skunks eat the food the coyotes eat the food. The hawks eat the cats (bumper year for them too)
The coyotes eat the cats
(Now a bumper year for coyotes). IRRESPONSIBLE people. They created a perfect storm that WE (all the other neighbors) have to deal with. Just last year we got together and spayed and neutered my neighbors cats. They are just ignorant to the impact they are having. They think it’s cute or act as if they are helping these animals. Frustrating!!!

Wait! Don’t kill him. Get him to roll on his back. All you need is a syringe. Stick it on both sides of the anus and drain the scent glands into another bottle. Haha

Wow, you're like I was a few years back. That changed once the raccoons started coming out and into the yard during daylight hours and pretty much acting like there wasn't a human five feet away. They weren't scared of me at all! I yelled, waved, and threw things they walked maybe twenty feet and came back. This was a family group of three, my birds were still out and not happy, neither was I. I'm not going to lie, I am scared of raccoons iv'e seen what they can do it isn't nice. I'm not a killer but I did hire a hitman, because I knew they'd be back until they got everything they could. I don't know if you're aware but a fat, healthy looking raccoon can still be rabid as a mofo. A cute little cuddly baby can still be rabid as a mofo. They rarely get that ragged Cujo look people think rabies has. Just please be careful.:)

Thanks for the concern, but I am doing what I need to already. Let me clear some things up. The best way to deter a raccoon, according to experts, is one-on-one. We ran him off. Got a couple good swats in. If he comes back, the dogs will let us know and we will have another conversation with Mr. Coon.

If he were rabid, he wouldn't have left. I see the neighborhood raccoons every night just about. I see them sitting right next to cats (the cats unbothered and accustomed to them) and outside people's front doors. I swear they think they are pets around here because people love to leave food out. He wasn't afraid of me until I went after him because he knows most people are kind here. Now we have established i'm not so nice when you mess with my hens. Not every wild animal is a monster, and we are taking precautions to make sure they don't start getting bad habits.

Additionally, it is illegal for me to trap and release him. It is illegal for me to kill him without a hunting license. It is illegal to discharge a firearm in a residential area. It is illegal to drown him. It is illegal to poison him. It is illegal to do anything to a raccoon unless you are a professional with a permit. And there are about 1000 more in the area anyway. Our local pest removal guys have permits to humanely trap and relocate after inspecting for disease. If the raccoons are rabid, they are humanely euthanized using co2. Any method besides humane euthanasia is illegal. I'm not naive or "new". I know the laws where I live and respect them. Florida actually vaccinates raccoons for rabies in problem areas, believe it or not, and prevents relocation of diseased animals. I love my state.

My chickens were originally free to roam the yard 24hrs a day and their "coop" was nothing put some 2x4s hung between some pallets. Of course a raccoon found them. That's my fault.

My chicks were in a run that is now being repurposed for the whole flock. It is predator proof and the chicks were all safe from the raccoon. We are building a new hen house inside to accomodate the big girls. Everyone is fine. Predators can't dig under and the locks are raccoon-proof. Stop acting like I'm doing nothing just because I didn't shoot the raccoon. I haven't lost a single chicken. I don't do drama and I didn't ask for opinions.
