You can buy some cool backgrounds at most aquarium stores or online. Then, depending on what scene you choose, decorate the inside to match. Something else to do might be take some boxes and glue them together and paint them, something like skyscrapers or an Anisazi village, or a gingerbread cottage, you could go anywhere.

So you're looking for decorations/cover you can clean regularly. What about scenery you can replace frequently? If you have a good source of cardboard (ask around grocery stores, liquor stores, etc., for TONS of free boxes) you could make them a new diorama every few weeks! Fairy garden and gingerbread houses sound like a great theme. What about pirates? Underwater? Mushroom forest? It could be so cute, and they'd never be bored with you shaking up their cage. If you don't want to get that involved, nothing wrong with cardboard tubes and scrap lean-tos.

Does anyone have any input on using sand for a base in the tank? I have a 55 gallon as well and just aquired 2 button quail. Wondering if sand is a good option. I know its easy to clean!

I just set up a tank for my button quail. I decided to go natural. They live in grasslands, so I put down dirt and dug up grasses from my yard and 'planted' them in the dirt. I put in some pots with dried grass, some rocks and a log to climb on. I also read you can grow finch seeds into a grass, so I have that started outside the cage. They seem happy. They are rolling around in the dirt and hanging out in the pots. I can replace the plants whenever they die or get eaten. And it's free to replace. Plus poop just gets mixed into the dirt and acts as fertilizer. I want to put in more grass and probably put a background on it. Mine live outside on my covered porch.View attachment 1517139

yes, but you will have lots dirty water unless you use parakeet waters.

The guy I got them from keeps them in wire cages outside year round. If they need it, I'll supplement heat.
