Cooling chicks with frozen milk jugs. Another way? Suggestions Please!

I was freezing 2L bottles, washing/sanitizing and reusing.

But I read here on BYC about people cutting the top off 2L bottles, freezing, then sliding the ice chunk out and putting it out for the birds. I now this this method because:

* the 2L never goes out to the chickens
* the melting runoff seeps into the ground and makes a cold, wet spot around the ice
* and most importantly the chickens seem to like it better

This method would not be good if one wanted to minimize moisture, but it's very hot and dry here in my part of TX at the moment. Some moisture in one corner of the tractor is a welcome change for the birds. THey lay and dig in it.
