The reason I have the big open slot in mine is due to the huge head of my Blue Orp rooster, LOL. Depending on their mood, they've been known to spill some on occasion, but if you only put maybe three or four holes rather than the big opening, I doubt they'd waste much. I didn't see your other feeder, sorry!
