When you think of coop design, it's typically anything but frivolous. It's all about predator proofing, weather proofing, ease of cleaning, health and wellness, and extra space for the 10 other chickens you didn't think you would "need", lol. So as time passed and everything necessary has already been taken care for my chickens, I've found myself doing crazy things like decorating the coop! LOL! Am I the only one doing this?!?! My husband thinks I've lost my mind...a package arrived last night with my granite and marble nest box eggs. :lau I'm actually starting to agree with him! So I actually have a question that logically NO ONE should have the answer too but once I had the eggs in hand they're bigger than I expected and also quite a lot heavier...is that ok? I mean, they're not going to pull a little chicken muscle trying to move them around, are they?

No, you're not the only one... and yes your husband is probably correct! :p

I dig those eggs! I'd use the if I had them... when I was a kid we had some kind of like that but they were standard egg size (no idea where they came from, and no idea what happened to them?).

I think the large size should be fine...? You'll just have to try them and see, but please don't let my hens know or they're gonna be jealous... they only have plastic duck sized eggs in their box as "decoy" eggs.

Haha, well I'm glad that mystery is solved then! Thanks, at least I can tell him I'm not the only one! :woot

I'll put the eggs out there in a couple of spots and see what they think of them. I have a couple of chubby chickens that could probably use the work out anyway. lol

If they do not work just take out and use as table decoration after cleaning of course. I used ceramic decoy eggs large brown to match my girls. My first girl laid where there were no eggs at all in the coop. The rest put the eggs in the nesting box when empty. I think they will find the ideal spot no matter what you do. I tried training with false eggs for the first two boxes and my girls use the box in the back furthest darkest region and not the two front boxes. Instinct takes over.

Thanks Melky! I wish I could say this were to help encourage them in some way but it's really just because I like the way they look, lol. I have a couple porcelain eggs out there and I brought them inside with the fresh eggs so many times that I finally put X's on them with sharpies.
I could use the excuse that they're polished and will be easier to clean...but while that is a perk, it would be dishonest because they're purely for asthetics. :D
On the other hand, I didn't pay attention to measurements and they're closer to the size of duck eggs and are heavy. I'll post an update on what the girls think of them!

Well the granite egg experiment was a success! I actually put the egg in a separate area from where they typically lay their eggs and I found an egg the first day! I'm only going to put 1 egg per box so there should be less chance of breakage.
I ordered some that are a smaller size so they will be easier for the girls to move them around. So I guess I have the rest of the large ones for another project! Lol
