Coop and run connection?

Barrel should work, as long as it is securely attached. I've seen people use plastic buckets open on both ends as well with good results. May be an issue if you have predators. Good luck! :)
 
I would do a chunnel of wire mesh and wood framing, like Chad Oftedal mentioned. I had a similar, small one leading from my old small coop to the dog house I was using as a nest box.
 
I just finished a connection between the hen house and run. There were design issues that made it complicated, because the run and henhouse required an offset in vertical and horizontal alignment. The final solution (after a failed first attempt) was simple and straightforward. Figure the total width and height of the tunnel that includes all offsets. Make anchor points, horizontally, top and bottom on both structures. Then, measure from the anchor points, and construct the covered bridge. I hope the pics help explain what my words cannot!
