On most any standard building over hang is 6-8 inches. If you had one the size you saw in the photo you may need some type of support for it not sure though. My Uncle being the building brains in the outfit, this was my first.

I believe overhangs depend on the climate and codes of the area. Here in Southern California the common overhang is about eighteen inches. Dont really know the code but I did take an architecture class a few years back and thats what I remember... On a shed??? dont think it matters only that you build it under the square feet allowed by codes require permits.

I personally would love the overhang and at that length. As long as it was fastened securely to the top of the shed dont think it would need more support. Unless its a high wind area. But it would definately increse the cost of the roof More plywood more shingles.

Looks great no matter our preferences ....

Here in California if its not a perminant structure.... (built with a foundation or attached to the house) you can go with 120 squre feet without a permit. It used to be 100.
dont know when that got changed. There may be differences in codes for farm structures too in farming districts... I only know San Diego which is definately not a farming community.... with the exception of flowers strawberries and avocados.

Well .... Roof shingled, Screen door on, and one window!!! To be continued 2moro if the rain holds up prob another window, top vents, and some trim maybe. Will have some PICs up of closer to finished product tomorrow.

This is an awesome post with great photos to follow it all! Thank you Mac!

A bit late on the building permit thing!! Though getting it even after the fact could be a good thing if you have neighbors who may 'turn you in'. When we built ours, I heard after the fact that one of our neighbors tried to turn us in, but I DID check in advance and in our township, as long as it's under 200 sq feet, we didn't need one. I heard the old bat was very upset that we were legal. (this is the same lady (term used loosely) who snuck on our property and dug up a bunch of day lilies without asking. Thing is, if she'd asked, I'd have helped her do it and wished her well! Since she didn't ask, I went and repossessed them, (and gave them to a friend a few miles away!). I wouldn't have known who left the holes in my lily bed, but another neighbor took photos and e-mailed them to me... dontcha just love digital cams with zoom?

//edit to add// our land is very hilly so we needed to handle the pitch of the hill with supports of various heights.. more complicated but still the same idea.

Thx for following the build everyone.

YOUR COOP LOOKS GREAT -- but don't you mean HARDWARE CLOTH to keep out predators, not chicken wire? The ones in the know say that chicken wire only keeps chickens in, not predators out (especially raccoons) -- THERE'S a topic in the index section . . ..
