Lookin' good, Bob.

After 20 years I'm glad you want have to be ducking around your chickens.

I viewed pics of your coop. It looks nice and I like the ventilation added.

It compliments your yard too and neighbors should have no complaints regarding it. What I noticed is that from what the photos show, looks like the roof does not overhang the sides. Looks like rain will run down and seep behind the siding on the two sides. If overhang is not added, you could have rot happen in structure behind the siding on the two ends.

Went back and found coop I viewed, so I know it was not yours. Am sorry for bringing it up. Pic I viewed showed a real problem that will cause leakage and rot. So I need to amend this to say do not do yours like the one shown as 'Two dog Farm'.

Be careful with chickens in a garden. They will eat most of the plants you want to grow (not just the produce but the plant itself) and will scratch out any mulch you try to use. A good fence usually works very well with chickens and a garden.

Are you definitely in the city limits of Vancouver? The reason I ask is that many people have a Vancouver address but actually live in unincorporated Clark County. If you live in the county there is no restriction on chickens. Check my page for construction picks on my coop. I used pocket hole joinery for mine.

Good luck and be sure to post more pic as you progress.

You might want to look into cheap ceramic floor tiles for the floor and up a foot around the walls except at the litter boards. It will stop the litter from rotting out the flooring. Places like Home Depot and Lowes frequently have it on sale sometimes in small amounts deeply discounted. We got ours at less than 50 cents a square foot.

We've got one heck of a mess of rotting pine shavings and chicken poo that both I and the chickens turn over. When it starts to smell you just add a fine layer of shavings. That keeps the carbon/nitrogen somewhat in balance. The big pile is under the roosts. I don't know how well it would work with 5 chickens but so far so good for us.

We don't plan on changing out our litter until we replace our current flock.

City codes may or may not allow for poultry or in the county, however if you are in a subdivision,or home owner association, check out the CC&R's as some of them are quite limiting and stifling.

I'll add a bit along this line since it can effectively moot several covenant clauses and in certain instances the entire set of covenants and restrictions, start with your state's laws since they will prevail if push comes to shove.

One can not restrict what one has no legal authority to restrict.

Consult with a lawyer. Always remain legal, do your homework first.

Hi Mike!

Yes we are inside the City limits of Vancouver. I did check you page out and you've got a great looking coop there! Nice job and I like the pocket holes you used for construction.

I'll put up a coop page of my own when I get a bit further on. By the looks of the weather report, I won't be doing much for the next week or so....
