Coop door to run

I'd like to see the pulley systems people use to open the door from the out side. I put on on my pop door and it opens it fine. The problem is when I let it down it doesn't close all the way.

Ours slides up and down and is made from a cutting board. DH used some metal angle iron to make the slides so that there's no chance of wood swelling and keeping it from sliding easily. The pulley cable goes out to the outside of the coop and there's a hook out there so we can open and close it (and secure it open) from outside. We put a small board across the bottom on the outside and the door is inside of that so there's no way for any crafty critter like a coon to get their little fingers underneath and push it up. The first pic shows it from the inside and on the second pic you can see how the cable sticks out the side of the coop.

I think your thread was hijacked MendonMan ;)

We think of our chickens as our pets. My kids enjoy going to the coops. I'd hate for them to find a massacre so I air on the side of caution. You'll really enjoy chickens. There's a lot of wonderful information here. I spent hours looking at all the coop pages before building mine. There are lots of different ways to approach keeping chickens. Find what works best for you so that you can enjoy them and not think of them as a chore.

I agree. You will discover what works best for your situation.

I have a small chicken door that stays hinged open slightly to keep bad weather out and allow chickens to pass through.

I never close my little chicken door, but at night I close the gate to the secure run.

Whenever I get up in the morning I open the gate to the run to allow my chickens to free range all day.

I built the secured run for times when I'm out of town away from home.

The fringe benefit is that I don't have to get up so early to let the chickens out of the coop.

Knock Kneed Hen - I think the magnets are a fabulous idea! And exactly what I need. I went to the website but I can't imagine how to install them. You don't have pictures of yours installed do you?

I have a 'guillotine' door on my coop, leading to a run that is as secure as I can make it. I open the door each morning and close it each night, which reduces drafts in cold weather.

To make the door I built a couple of runners into which the door fits, slides up and down. I then put some eye hooks in the top edge of the door and tied a rope so that it passes through the eye hooks. The loose end was then tied onto the main length of rope with a slip knot, making a triangle. I then attached some more eye hooks to the front of the coop and passed the rope through these to the outside of the run. I don't have to go into the run to open or close the door. This is handy when I've already dressed for work and don't want to pick up any chicken 'treasures.' I can post photos if you are interested.

My carpenter is building me 2 doors, a solid, secure door for on the outside, and a "screen" door for the inside. This way, we can allow air in, but not necessarily chickens out.

Missydcpc - I would love to see pictures of this and how it works when finished. We are still working on our coop and pop doors have not yet been cut all the way through to the outside, as we are waiting for spring to put in the chicken runs.
