coop floor

I have a wood floor, inside my barn, converted to the coop, you can paint the floor, so it's easier to clean, mine is covered with pin shavings, which I just add new over, removing any really nasty stuff as I go....I live in a high desert area, and it works great here...are you trying to collect the poop? How high are your boxes and roosts? The roosts should be higher than the boxes. I recently moved my boxes lower, the pullets were sleeping and pooping in them, now they are primarily snuggled in the shavings, or on the roosts.

We, too love it here! We have lived in the now developed West Valley for 2+ years and have really enjoyed it! It's a little tougher to love now with the high humidity (for AZ), and the piles of dust from that storm now coating everything, but thankfully, it is all as you said, short lived!

That makes sense in going with wood, so I guess it makes my solution cheaper and easier.

I was going to do shavings, but with the crazy wind here, esp. during monsoons, #@%t flies everywhere as it is, and to add straw or shavings to that would be mayhem!! Last summer we had such a bad storm, the wind took my Buff Laced Polish Hen across the yard in mid air into the cinder block wall! It is craziness, which I am sure you can attest to!

I would just do dirt, and water it once or twice a day to give them something to do, but then I would have more dirt in my house since my kids go play with them and feed them several times a day. I am going to do dirt in the coop and then just put shavings in the nesting boxes and go from there.

I remember those dust storms and the light show from all the dust particles in the air!! Beautiful.
You should be able to rake up any nuggets in the dirt to keep it clean. Before you hose it so they dont get juicy

When starting with chickens it a "try this, try that" type of process till you find what works for you.
