Our open air coop in the swamp is almost done. I live in North Florida and our property is surrounded by swamp land. I built the coop and run in the highest point of the yard that also happens to have great tree cover for shade..

The coop itself is 4x8 with an open front. I had to put up screen over the hardware cloth because the gnats and mosquito's were driving the chickens crazy. They have been locked in the coop for a couple of weeks patiently waiting on the run to be finished. They are much happier now that they can sleep without shaking their heads from bugs bothering them. It is 3' off of the ground for predator reasons as well as potential flooding if we get tropical weather.

I covered 24' of the whole structure with old screen porch roofing that i had from the house that used to be on the property. It is metal with 4" of foam sandwiched in it so heat will not be a problem from above. the last 6' has welded wire fence over the top for hawk and owl prevention.

The run is 8'x24' and is just over 7' tall slightly sloping to the back. I had old storm doors that i used for the entry door and the door to the storage/ work area on the back. I just need to add a hardware cloth skirt to the bottom and it will be predator proof in the run. The only thing that i had to buy were 4x4 posts, the welded wire fence and 2 sheets of plywood. All of the rest was salvage and stuff i have been collecting for years. Its nice to finally use the stuff.

My uncle gave me an old granite countertop from a bathroom remodel. I just have to hook up the drain and i am ready to go. This back area will be off limits to the chickens and this is where the egg collection and storage will be. It is also covered and is 6'x8' allowing me to have plenty of room. i plan to install pavers soon for the floor. I made it so the predator proofing went around the back here as well just in case someone decided they wanted to steel eggs or chicken food.

I have a bunch of driftwood from previous projects that i am going to put in the run so they have something fun to play with. The area where the pile of sticks are will become a sitting area with potted plants and my orchids so i can chill and watch chicken tv. I hope to let them out in the run today for an hour and see if i can get them to use the ramp. We shall see how that goes.

I like it! looks well thought out, and I am 100% for re-purposing as much as possible. Well done!

Thank you for sharing. I have a coop/run with 2" x 4" welded wire and 1/2" hardware cloth over that. The back area about 7' x 8is enclosed with plywood and roof. I was going with just using the back area as the coop. But I just saw a raccoon standing next to my coop/run two days ago. So I am thinking of putting a coop in there like a plywood box but needing some idea to make it so it won't be so hot in the summer. Your coop and run has helped me with some ideas. What did you use to attach the wire to the ground or just attach to the 4x4? How high is your coop? My chicks about 3 months old like to roost high and that's why I am thinking how tall should the coop be so they can roost in it.

Thanks for the compliments. I did put alot of thought into it prior to breaking ground. The coop is 4' high inside and is about 3' off of the ground. If there is one thing i would do different, i would have made the inside of the coop at least 5' high for perching. I have not secured the welded wire yet and only have it nailed to the 4x4s. it is very ridged though and the 8' span between the posts isnt a big deal. I am going to put 36" hardware cloth on the bottom with half going vertical and the other half as a skirt on the ground. Then i am going to put a 2x4 over that and screw it to the posts to hold it all tight. More pics to come once i get things finished. I love this site and appreciate everyones ideas and thoughts.

Thanks for the answer. I too still need to put a skirt around my run/coop to make it secure. I am still thinking whether I should put in a box with an open front sinilar like yours or just section off the back area that is enclosed by plywood on 3 sides already, by adding hardware cloth and a door to make it like an attached coop. Now I am just using a bamboo screen that I roll down for night time when the my girls roost in there. So many decisions. Maybe I should take pictures and post a thread and ask people for the advice. Please do post your progress.

I would def post pics and ask. Everyone's situation is different and the folks on here are happy to help and know what they are talking about.

I finished hooking up the sink as well as the ramp and pop door last night. I used an oak log at the bottom of the ramp instead of blocks or pavers to lessen the slope. I am going to let them out today at lunch and i know they are ready. Most are 8 weeks today and a few are 7 weeks. Crazy little critters for sure. I have 3 red sex links, 4 olive eggers, 1 light brahma, 1 speckled sussex, and 1 silver black laced wyandotte.

I let them out today at lunch and they reluctantly all piled out the door. The smallest one of all, the wyandotte, was first out followed by the brahma. they all got about half way down and freaked out to get back in and a few fell off of the ramp. Once out they were so happy and the rest followed suit shortly after.FREEDOM

that's an awesome pic! I usually make a point to be sure I can sit and watch the first time I let chicks out. It's hilarious to watch them try to ease out and look around. Once out the first few times, they'll RUN and fly out!
