Coop on a hillside - roost heights

The run will have a solid roof so the only thing is if all the rain comes off the downhill side of the coop roof onto the run roof then maybe I only need gutters on the run. But that all gets complicated because of rain-water retrieval and the best gutter to do that from (I want to be able to clean that gutter easily).
Yes and Yes!

You can just post pics right in this thread, then when it's all done, copy it all to an article.

Will you put gutters on coop roof?
You know what they say about sh!t rolling downhill,
rain off roof will wash all your run bedding down the slope.
Another thing about gutters is they tend to eliminate mud from splashing up on the building.
A couple buddies were laughing at me for putting gutters on my chicken coops.

Progress on framing the first covered run. Amazingly my calculations on the slope worked (well sort of). The roof of the run comes in only 1" below the coop roof. But 1" is enough! First run nearly framed.jpg

A thought about roost location: if you put it only in half of your coop, think about whether you want all the night-time droppings at the top end (spend more time mixing into the litter) or the bottom end (get cleaned out sooner.)

Another possibility for solving the height issue-- run the roost the other direction, sideways to your original plan. Then it would be the same height above the ground all the way across.

Indeed it is taking a while and the chickens are being very patient! Actually we prioritized predator-proofing the run so they are camping out in their old coop but inside the new run while we build around them. That prioritization means I still haven’t got to the roosts which was what prompted me to start this thread in the first place!

Thank you! I am very excited about it. Honestly the coop is nicer than my living room (if you can get used to the dirt floor of course!). Some reclaimed doors and windows have really helped make it very fancy. The roof is the priority over the next few days before the next storm. I will post again at next milestone which hopefully will be coop interior. Thanks for all the encouragement.
