these are my coop and run while under construction. you can tell from the run that we have PREDATORS. i started out with about $100 in the whole thing but after repeated attacks i spent a further $1000 predator proofing the coop and adding the fort knox run. 17 chickens and have not lost a one since this was completed. a good chunk of that cost went into 1x2 welded wire... the really heavy stuff.

You don't do backyard chickens to save or make money. It's a hobby.....and some hobbies are simply more expensive than others. There is no R.O.I. on backyard chickens.

bdjh your right its a hobby and we dont do backyard chicken to make money, but I believe there are some ROI on backyard chicken, Fresh eggs daily (no meds); Met more friends since my hens are laying, I get average US $30 after cost of feeds and beddings. Which will pay for their coop within 2-3 yrs (I collected $210 after cost, so far since their egg laying) I didnt plan to sell eggs until friends asked for them.

We have at least $1000 into the coop and run, but I would venture to say less than $1500. If we hadn't gotten ducks, dealt with the costs associated with managing them, and then retrofitted for chickens, it would have been cheaper.

Those are pricey dozen of eggs, LOL! Mine would have cost similar if I didn't get some left over construction materials from some friends that just build their homes.

Yes! We've been referring to them as "the golden eggs"

Although I'm still in the "winging it" build process of our first coop, and even though my design may have some shortcomings, all in all we have about $3 worth of nails & $10 in wire (which I already had on hand)..... so basically $0.00 .... We had pallets donated, scrap wood gathered and big recycling dreams lol
Your coops looking great!

Where is the over $10K, $20K or $50K options? LOL...

I have no idea how much my 'coop' cost as it's a vintage turn of the century style poultry house that has been remodeled, added on to and re-purposed for other uses over the last several decades... At 1800 sqft with today's building cost in my area it would easily exceed $50K, probably close to $100K to replace as constructed...

But, I only have maybe $500 invested into it out of pocket...
