This is probably a stupid question but what is considered the run? I’m assuming the coop is the part that is enclos. At the very top. This is a picture of

my coop. Is the bottom considered the run?

In this forum, we use run to refer to the outside portion of our housing usually open or screened in. That which has walls and solid roof is the coop. Commercial products like this one sometimes call the whole shabang a coop. So yes, I’d call this a small coop with run with the coop on the top right. FYI, always ignore the number of chickens advertised as suitable for these retail products. They are way too high.

That is what I thought but wasn’t sure. Thx for clarifying. My coop said it was for 4-6 chickens but I only got 3. I thought any more then that would be to many! Again thank you!

A prefab coop is definitely sized for less chickens than the box says.

It is typical to recommend 4 sq fit for the coop per bird and 10 sq feet for the run.

So for your 3 hens it is recommended to have a 12 sq ft coop (3 ft by 4 ft) and the run to be 30 sq ft, so if it was 3’ wide as the coop is, it would be 10’ Long.

I recommend measuring your coop and run areas.

My guess is that coop section is enough for 2 adult hens and the "run" is probably enough for 1 if kept locked up full time.

If you plan on building a more reasonable sized run you could convert the entire thing to a coop with some alterations. In that case it might work for 3 or 4 hens, depending on actual measurements.

The run is 3’x8’. The coop is 3’x3’. Do u think that is sufficient for 3 hens?

It is definitely more suited to 2 hens than 3. 3 is overstocked. However my coop is 4x5 and run is 7.5x7.5 (I thought the coop was 4x6 and the run had a last second design change from 8x8) so i will also be slightly overstocked.

Don’t add any more hens if you already have 3 and you might consider not replacing if one dies.

Best bet probably to add on more space!
