Coop ventilation windows

Nothing wrong with windows at roost hight during the winter as long as they are closed tight with no drafts coming through them. Common to get -20 in my area, upstate NY also. Haven't had any issues. Well ventilated, draft free coop is the key.
My window are open all the time once the nights stay 45° and above.
I have windows on both sides of my roost and since I have relatively mild winters (last year's low was 12F), they stay open year round. Usually no draft on the roost despite the windows as the main wind direction is behind the coop, and the windows are perpendicular to that. Once in a blue moon we'll get sideways wind and in those cases I'll close windows on the affected side, but that's more because rain/snow can blow in under those circumstances.

I do think its cute for them to have a view from their roosts, but I don't think its right for our cold winters. Also our chicks don't go in their coop at all during the day (its summer) is it normal for them to do so? Are the cross breezes needed for warm nights? It's 60-65 degrees usually at night during summer here.
The coop can gain heat during the day.
Put a thermometer inside coop to monitor this.

You've gotten a lot of good advice from people who actually live in your climate,
listen to them.

You definitely don't want this in your chicken coop:

Soffit and gable or soffit and ridge venting is probably your best bet.

I love your sketch with the wind-blown chicken!
