If I have a coop that is very secure, where I confine the chickens at night, can I have a run that is slightly less secure, as long a it's covered from aerial predators, during the daylight hours?

Depends on what you have as other threats. Stray dogs can be brutal. A fox is a 24/7 threat. I got away with freeranging my flock for almost a full year.I let them out first thing in the morning, and they would wander all over the place. Then, one afternoon my daughter came home from school and found different colored piles of feathers throughout the yard. Some people can get away with lax security, some can't. You just have to kinda know what you have in your area. Hopefully, you won't find out the hard way.

I would secure against dogs, raccoons, and coyotes at the outset. I consider them a bigger threat here in the foothills of the mountains than the hawks. One attack can destroy the entire flock. One hawk attack will get one chicken at most.

If the chickens are confined to the run in the daytime, securing it against dogs, raccoons, and coyotes would be appropriate. These predators will be out in daylight, too. They can tear apart weak fencing or dig under otherwise.
