hey yall! finally finished my coop/run. the coop is sealed up on all but one side, which is open to the run. I saw a coop like this while out on a bikeride, and followed suit for added ventilation (frkn hot in FL!) Recently read that the birds get that classic anxiety around dusk, near their roost time, due to bugs bothering them (parasites the book said). i used 1/4" hrdwr cloth all

around coop and run (including a predator apron) so i dont think the local racoons pose a threat. Does anyone think the no-seeums and mosquitos could be detrimental to the chickens? thanks in advance for helping, this forum is tops!

If you have them, then yes, gnats, black flies, midges, no-see-ums, whatever they are called in your area can be a problem if they are bad in your area. Where I live we have buffalo gnats for a few weeks in late May/early June, which are active in the daytime, and my local chicken group is reporting deaths right now from them. We lost almost our entire flock two years in a row until we figured out what happened. This year we got chicks for the first time in many years and we built the coop to be insect proof. The chicks are in there while we are finishing the run and so far so good. I also have permethrin on hand to treat the birds and the coop iif needed.
