Cord attaching chick and egg?

Hi one of my baby quails just hatched! This is my first experience with poultry and with hatching anything. There is a thing kind of like a cord attaching the quail chick to the egg still. He's been walking around fine but the egg remains stuck. He is still wet, so I was wondering maybe it would dry and fall off? Does anyone know of this is normal?

Clip it off when you remove them if it doesnt fall off by then. Do Not pull at it. Its not compleatly outside of the realm of normal but shouldnt be constant. Dont knlw why sometimes that happens. Shouldn't give the poor lil guy much trouble.

Even if it needs to be clipped it isnt a big deal, there shouldnt be any blood. Your welcome. for more healthy babes!

How many are you expecting? Are they coturnix or others?

Thanks guys! They are coturnix. I know at least 3 should hatch. They were shipped and it's my first time.

Awe! Well im glad u picked that type, they are the easiest of the quails who are a good deal more difficult than chickens. You will have to get rid of any extra males somehow though or else theyll fight and injure one another and drive the hens mad then they wont lay. Do you intend to keep them in a hutch outside for eggs? What part of the world are you in? Climate is a big consideration with those adorable small birds i have about 40 of them right now do you say three because you've been candling them watching them develope? So much fun!

It sounds like youve done your homework, even with your extra thermometer in there and you just put up this thread because you ran into a little snag so now that ive made it clear what you should do i am going to bed but i hope to learn more about your quail adventure soon!

It's still attached to its waste sac (I'm sure there's a better term) - most of the time they break it pretty quick, but in this case I would gently lift the baby and the egg, taking GREAT care to not pull on or apply pressure to the cord connecting the egg shell/sac, lay it flat on a paper towel and work gently until you've got the thin mucous string between the egg shell and waste sac and the chick and either use a knife or scissors- again- don't pull !!!
