I can't stand them.
My boss has 5. He had 2 other that passed of old age since I've worked there. Was raised them and had puppies from time to time. Working lines.
My job before this one my boss also had 4 or 5. His were champion show lines. One even went to Crufts when I worked there.
One thing both bosses dogs had in common that I didn't know about the breed is that they all can't get along. Both had to keep certain ones away from each other or they would viciously fight. I'm not a fan of that.
They've all been completely needy pests and always loud. They bark way too much when anything is going on and they never leave you alone. Heaven forbid you start a game of fetch because they'll expect to continue it into next week.
They're also just as bad if you pet them or show them attention. Just to needy for me. Maybe that has to do with me being around them when I'm working.
Oh and BTW they're a herding breed and for some reason people think they're good to have around horses. Theirs cause more trouble then being of any help with the horses. They just want to mess with them and bark non stop.
Ya probably a lot may be simple lack of proper training but not even close to a favorite breed of mine.
Also I just seen a litter of 9 week olds last week. 3 blue merles OMG those are so freaking cute.

I don't like excessive barking. It's one reason I have avoided Shelties.

I like lazy.

I'm used to aussies that are people orientated, and people pleasers. We've had a border collie. She was all business. I switched to aussies because I wanted a dog that was more focused on us and not always looking to get to work. We adored our border. I was looking at corgi because they are a bit smaller. Sounds like maybe I need to stick with aussies. Definitely don't want a dog that doesn't fit my lifestyle.
We may look at aussies, but actually thought of a German Shepherd for our next dog. Not that either are up there in age yet, but the BC Josie is getting near 10. They both are excellent guard dogs. But if you came here and we weren't around to call the dogs off, I don't think either would do a thing to you but bark if you got out and walked around. Josie can look mean, show her teeth and hair stands up, but she's all looks and bark.

We can leave both of them outside for an entire day while we're gone, and they won't leave the property, so they're very good at that, too.

But, we want a dog that would keep a person in their car until we came outside.

We're out in the boonies and don't get many cars down this road, but I worry that someday, someone will come here for some nefarious reason. Our dogs wouldn't probably scare them off.

Thanks for the info, Moony!!!! I appreciate all info both good and bad. This kind of info is actually really good to know for someone looking to possibly get into the breed like @oldhenlikesdogs or others because so many times when you go to research a breed it’s all just fluff and good stuff and you never really see any negative points about people’s respective breeds or whatever. So it’s nice hearing it from someone who actually has experience with them even if you don’t necessarily own them yourself, you might as well cause you certainly spend plenty of time with them I imagine! LOL anyway, they don’t sound like the breed for me! :lau  but they’re cute at least!

My second dog I got as a kid was a German shepherd. I thought it would be fun to attack train her using my younger brother. She could be scary. Once when a car came selling something or another she jumped on the hood of the car and barked viciously. She suffered a lot of separation anxiety. German shepherds in general seem to be an anxious breed. They are a good visual deterrent.

My last 3 Australian Shepherds were good protection dogs. I felt safe with them. The current one is a bit different. At least she will trip anyone up who's up to no good. Australian Shepherds in general are wary of strangers, and sometimes become protective. Between them and my boxer I feel pretty safe here. The boxer most times is hiding behind the house when people show up thanks to the UPS driver trying to give her biscuits when young. On occasion she's suddenly next to me with a low growl. I trust she knows something and am glad she's there to back me up.

I loved my Aussie. He was my keep varmints and chicken eaters out of the yard dog. I don't think he cared for the birds as much as he took his job as the property keeper very serious.
He was stand-offish about people he didn't know and no one came inside the gate until I went out and let them in.
But once he knew one of us was OK with them he was fine too. I never really knew how protective he would be over one of us.
One day a friend and his wife stopped by. Kade was laying on the porch and we were in the yard talking. My kid was young then. Just a little guy. My friend was playing and quickly grabbed him on both sides of his waist. Like he was gonna "get him". The boy let out a squeal and in a heartbeat the dog was off the porch and headed straight for my friend looking unhinged.
I had to yell at the dog and jump in between them and get him settled. It freaked me out. I know he was gonna bite him and I didn't know if I was gonna get him stopped.
He was my dog but I know he cared more for that kid then he did for me. He just knew he needed to.

Aussies are great dogs. That's the kind of protection I felt mine would provide if ever needed. They are good at goofing, and can get serious when needed. I was very attached to the one I had to put down last March. She had created a standard I'm unsure any other Aussie can live up to. My current one has decided my husband is her job, and is devoted to him even though he doesn't want her attention. Not sure if I should try again with another some day, or let it be at this point. Hard to top the best.
