Corid and laying hens???? can I eat the eggs??

I finally found some answers:
I called two live stock vets in town and one told me ( or his top tech) told me that she "was pretty sure it did eventualy leave the system. I should wait about a month at least." I call the other and his tech said they do perscribe it for laying hens but she would have to research the withdrawl time ( I haven't heard back and it has been 2 days). I found this report http://www.farad.org/publications/miscellaneous/LayingHensEggResidues.pdf it goes into great detail on several meds for livestock. In your PDF reader search bar type in the med you are looking for and it brings it up for you. After one night of no sleep and reading hundreds of post and studies and pdf files (very difficult to find 2 or more of anything to agree) The final out come is a recommended 2 weeks or more determining he dosage you us. The reason for the UK position is because the effects on the food chain (meaning us who eat eggs with the residue) have not been studies. Because the yolk is the first to form and aborbs soo much from the chickens system the consentration is highest in the yolk. All that being said, while I was doing all this research I did not treat my flock with corid. i have been using alternative methods (which is alot more work) but it seems to be working and I am still getting eggs everyday, everyone is eating and drinking, not more blood in poop and the poop is beginning to have form again. First signs of sickness were on Monday morning so we are 5 days into it so I have high hopes. I am choosing not to use the corid because what I am doing is working but If things were to change then I would use it and wait the 30 day withdrawl time.

Thanks to everyone who responded.!!

Sorry, let me clear something up....As stated in the original post I did give one dose to the flock that first night but they had drank only 1/2 of the gallon prepared when I took it out of the pen due to the the information I had come across, so I guess they did get some but not much, that night I started my other methods...... :)

You're correct, specifically the sulfa drugs. Keep in mind that sulfa drugs such as sulmet etc...only treat 2 types of cocci in chickens. Whereas corid treats all 9 types of cocci and is much less harsh on the chickens system, not like the sulfa drugs especially with chicks.

Thanks to unending rules and regulations in foreign countries governing the use of animal medications including varying withdrawal periods; not like here...there isnt any withdrawal period using Corid for egg consumption in this country: I've used it and ate eggs afterwards, still here typing.

From the Merck Vet Manual:

Corid survivor here too. Corid is simply a thiamin blocker, while I do not know at what concentration it gets deposited in the eggs, the reality is that you'd have to be an egg eating machine to eat enough eggs to even possibly cause a need for you to take a few B vitamins to counteract whatever might be in the eggs! Also, being that the normal course of treatment with Corid is only 5 to 7 days I really don't see it being humanly possible to consume enough eggs to cause a deficiency. Personally it's not something I am remotely concerned about.

I have no doubt that people live with the effects of corid, we also live with the effects of GMO foods (which our government approves without long term testing). as for the alternative methods thay seem to be working well:

Grapefruit Seed extract: 62 drops in 1/2 gal (I only give 1/2 gal @ a time so I know they are getting the full amount and I will refil if necessary)
Parasite cleanse (herbal mix of 6 herbs): I have 3 feeders, 2 small 1 large, in each small I put 3 capsules (I open them and dump the ingredients in to crumbles) into 3/4 full feeder and in the large feeder I put 4 capsules into 1/3 full.---------in alternative dosages it 1/2 capsul for an animal 1-10 lbs---- I also put 2 capsuls in each bowl of mash (3) so that I know that they are getting someright off the bat and then they get more through out the day as they eat. After they eat all the parasite cleanse I refill the feeder with just feed all about 1/2 or less so that the next day they will be close to empty --- this helps me monitor intake
Buttermilk mash: 2 tbsp yogurt wth culture, 2 1/2 cups cultured buttermilk, 4 tbsp dry milk------ I added crushed garlic and powdered clove to this on the 4th day--- I give this 2x a day
on the 4th day after all poop was taking form I put 1 1/2 Tbsp of ACV in grapefruit seed extract water,

I have been cleaning the coop and yard each day to remove as much poo as possible. They really are doing well!! It is a bit more work, but if it is working then I plan to stick with it and @ the end of the 2 weeks take the poo for examination at on of the vets here in town.

I will do the grapefruit extract for 7- 10 days and the parasite cleanse for 14 days. I do realize that there are some that will roll their eyes at this, we do alternative meds for ourselves here at the house: we treat ear infections, strep throat, UTI, rashes, brown recluse spider bites and just about anything else that pops up all without the help of mainstream medicine (although if our ways won't handle the problem we will go to the Dr, we average about one visit every 2 - 3 years.) If the chickens show signs that they are regressing I will use the corid and follow the 30 day withdrawl period (which is what the local live stock vet recommended). I hope this was helpful. I do realize that I have no where near the experience that many of you have and I respect the knowledge you share on this site. I have learned much from many of you!!!

Blessings
Lisa

Grapefruit seed extract is an antiparasitic and a antibiotic
