EDIT: I wish Ideal were closer to me!!! They have several breeds that I like that are hard to find anywhere. I really like Cackle Hatchery but the're limited in birds I like and I wouldn't accept FREE chickens from McMurray!!!

Hellbender I'd love to see some pictures of your Buckeye/DarkCornish crosses.
I got my Dark Cornish from a Canadian Breeder. Here are some pictures of my 4 week old chicks.

That's a 4 week old Buckeye in the background. The Cornish are huge.

This is Danny named after Danny Devito. He is 19 weeks old today and I need everyone's opinion on him as I'm weeding out dark cornish cockerels and he's so different than the rest (although my favorite). First he has brown lacing in his breast while none of my other cockerels do. I like this trait but don't know if it has any negative impact on his breedability. Also he has a hump on his back which is strictly feathers (i felt under) which I also like but the others have much less of this saddle. He is also the shortest male which is a plus.

Please be brutally honest and pick him apart, but be accurately honest.

EDIT: I strongly suspect the Buckeyes will catch a few growing spurts and will eventually stand well over your Dark Cornish.

Cherie1n2, I don't have the experience to comment on Danny, to me he looks lovely......I really like his head and his :"look" but isn't 19 weeks a bit young to be choosing the best Cornish? If you have a copy of the standard of perfection, you could line up your cockerels and choose based on the one closest to the standard.

Hellbender thanks, it would be awesome if my Buckeyes got anywhere as big as the Cornish! I think we may be size- challenged here in Ontario, but we'll see. I have never seen a real Buckeye yet (except my chicks!) only pictures. I am very curious about your Buckeye/Cornish crosses, they are the first step for me in my project birds starting with the first cross in 2016. The chicken calculator predicts red birds with black single lacing. My goal is to breed a hardy, pea combed white-eggshell dual purpose layer, around 7-8 lbs. that have a body type like an Ixworth or Welsh Black chicken. Fortunately I have chicks from a line of excellent egg- laying Cornish and decent egg- laying Buckeyes. I'll be adding Ancona and perhaps Red Dorking into the mix. This is my "bucket" project, I have the rest of my life to mess around with it. Should be fun if nothing else.

Hellbender, which breeds are you looking for that you can't find? Just curious. I thought that in the USA you could find pretty well every breed. I would have REALLY liked some of

those Twentse/Kraienkoppe chickens from Greenfire............

I would have scraped together the cash....... but they don't ship to Canada any more

I would be worried about those white earlobes. It is an indication that there is something else in him.

Thanks Walt, I noticed that on him while mapping his traits and it didn't hit me that it was off for the breed until your post and I went through earlobe genetics and back through the Cornish SOP. Most of my birds I plan to cross breed so I wasn't looking for perfect birds to start with but I did at least expect to be getting the correct base genes!! Ugh.

As far as other traits is there anything else you notice negative about him? He's definitely out for breeding to Cornish, but I'd like to know for further reference.

Hatcheries many times put Leghorn's into whatever they breed to get better egg production. He appears too narrow, lacks bone size and the width between the legs in too close. Cornish should have enough room to put your fist between the legs with width to spare.

I am building a new coop, and I was hoping someone could tell me what the maximum height roost should be for adult standard dark cornish. What's the correct roost width for this breed? Thanks.
