Cornish Thread

Thanks CanadianBuckeye! He is fat because he gained 2 lbs since I put him with the hens and they have layer mash but he eats most of it. Voracious appetite. Starting to develop walking problem. Going to soak his feet in epsom salt and check for infection tomorrow. Thinking of giving him oats and apple cider vinegar see how he does. Ive never seen him cover the hens but all eggs are fertile. Will incubate them soon but want him to make it longer to have better females to cross with

F2 3/4 Dark Cornish - 1/4 CornishX Roaster DOH 2/10/16 43.3g showing red on neck and tail. Today 2/12/16 - 56.1g. Should be interesting to see the color develop.

Dad "Bob" 12 lbs -(F1)1/2 Dark Cornish - 1/2 CornishX Roaster DOH 8/20/2015

Mom "Marion" Pure Dark Cornish

lpatelski, Bertha or Bert!
Was this the only chick that hatched, or just the biggest and best?
Biggest so far.

I have 2 Pure Dark Cornish, 3 50/50 X 50/50, 2 3/4 Dark Cornish-1/4 White CornishX Roaster

My (4) 69g-75g "Betty" a McMurray's White CornishX Roaster hen, eggs are in for lock down. They are 3/4 White CornishX Roasters with "Bob" as dad. So same dad. I assume they will be dwarfing the 3/4 Dark Cornish.
DOH 8/20/2015 Bob as a three week old chick.
Bob's weigh-in 1448g or a little over three pounds on 9/24/15 at just over a month old. As you can see his breast muscle is heavy enough to weigh down his front end. This is NOT a good trait for breeding, but he does his job well enough.

So I think breeding him back to a White Cornish Roaster hen will net a moderate growing, more early maturing bird.
Bro Redmen(red band) is more upright.
Redmen is the same age and parentage as Bob,1/2 Dark Cornish-1/2 White Cornish Roaster hatched on 8/20/2015. He is the spare - Ya know...an heir and a spare. I may be selling him as I do not need more than two or three cock birds. Redmen is fertile and proven 10 lbs 6 oz 2/12/16.

I also have (3) 3/4 DC eggs, (4) Pure DC, and (2) 50/50 X 50/50 cross eggs in lock down as of this morning.

It's interesting how different Bob and Redmen look- both handsome dudes . Those are huge eggs too, you should have some very big chicks hatching very soon- good luck!
It's pretty tough looking at my dark, silent, cold incubator but I'm glad I waited, we are getting a reminder of the winter we've been missing. The chickens are not amused, with wind chills in the -40o range I didn't let them out today.

Various shots of my Cornish. Moved my MMH DC cockerels into my pigeon pen yesterday. They are so rowdy at this age and were nonstop terrorizing my hens. My MMH pullets also started laying this past month; very nice sized eggs for such young birds. And they are indeed small, they have a nice hefty body but their stature is a good few inches shorter than the average hen.

And one slightly blurry picture of my breeder stock DC hen. I doubt she's anywhere near show or even breeder quality but she's got a great, wide body and she lays huge eggs a few times a week. I want to cross her with my Ga Noi stag this spring and later with my MMH cockerels. Bet I could get some neat results from the first cross and great meat birds from the second.

Sounds like a plan! Good luck. Should make some awesome capons...
