Hello again, BYC friends. (Particularly those in the US.) I'll lay my cards on the table. I'm a 51 year old, mixed race woman who is a bleeding heart liberal. It's pretty to think we we could all join hands (metaphorically, of course) and get along, but I know that won't happen. I live in a liberal bubble where most people I know think much like me. That's why I find this thread both distressing and fascinating.
The United States and our Constitution were created with fundamental tensions purposely baked in. Three co-equal branches of government. States rights vs. Federal rights. Freedom of speech. (Which is getting a robust workout here!) Plus a myth and tradition of the individual who pulls themselves up by their own boot straps. I mention this history because these tensions are always in play, pulling and twisting our nation. It's a tough, messy system, but it's still holding holding together because we believe in it. We. Together.
We also have a tradition of putting aside differences and pulling together in a crisis. Wild fires, hurricanes, 9/11...This pandemic is a crisis unlike our nation AND the world have seen in a century. And there are countless examples of people coming together to help one another.
But the challenges of a pandemic are different. We can't see this enemy, only the effects after it has attacked. Public health experts know a lot about how to slow down the spread of a virus, but this coronavirus is unlike any other to infect the human race. Many people followed all the rules and still got infected; but many more have stayed healthy.
The basic "rules" to minimize spread are the same as we've been taught since kindergarten: cover your cough, wash your hands, stay home if you're sick. But when the whole planet is involved, it gets a hell of a lot more complicated.
We're tired. We're frightened. Some of us are infected, have loved ones infected, have loved ones who have died. We're not all going to agree, but my one wish is that we respect one another as fellow human beings facing a crisis together. We know how to do this. We've done it before.
Be well.
